Prevalence and risk factors for newborn anemia in southwestern Uganda: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The global prevalence of anemia in pregnancy is about 42%, and in sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence of newborn anemia ranges from 25-30%. Anemia in newborn babies may cause complications such as delayed brain maturation and arrested growth. However, there is limited data on prevalence of newborn anemia and its risk factors in people living in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVES: We determined the prevalence and risk factors for newborn anemia and its correlation with maternal anemia in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of 352 pregnant women pr

Maternal and neonatal profile and immediate outcome in ELBW babies.

The present study was designed to ascertain the maternal and neonatal profile and immediate outcome of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies at a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Case records of ELBW inborn babies delivered between August 2000 and August 2001 were analyzed by using a preset proforma. A total of 52 ELBW babies were admitted in NICU in the relevant period, out of which 30 (57%) survived. Maternal anemia and previous pre-term (PT) delivery were the common predisposing factors for PT delivery. Mean gestational age was 27.8 weeks and mean birth weight was 831 grams

Is there room for prompt routine ophthalmic examination in neonates with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during the neonatal period?

PURPOSE: To establish the clinical necessity of routine targeted ophthalmic examination of newborns with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during the neonatal period. METHODS: This retrospective study included consecutive neonates that were referred for ophthalmological screening within the context of a proven congenital CMV infection. The presence of CMV-related ocular and systemic findings was determined. RESULTS: Among the 91 patients included in this study, 72 (79.12%) were symptomatic with one or more of the following manifestations: abnormal brain ultrasound (42; 46.15%), smal

Hematological profile in neonatal jaundice.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal morbidity due to neonatal jaundice is an alarming situation, which needs to be detected and managed at the earliest possible. Many different etiologies come into play together, and at times, it is difficult to isolate the cause of neonatal jaundice. Certain diagnostic tests such as hemoglobin levels, reticulocyte count, leukocyte count, and blood grouping might hasten the diagnosis. This study analyzes the different parameters of hematological profile and how they influence the various etiologies of neonatal jaundice. METHODS: One hundred jaundiced neonates admitted to th

Comparative Analysis of Hematological and Biochemical Changes in Neonates among Women with and without COVID-19 Infection during Pregnancy.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the test results of neonates delivered by COVID-19-positive mothers during pregnancy with those of neonates born to unvaccinated mothers who are COVID-19-free. A cohort study was conducted on 367 pregnant women who gave birth at Premiere Hospital, Timisoara, Romania, between May 2021 and February 2022. Two groups were established: Group 1, with 167 pregnant women infected with COVID-19, and Group 2, with 200 pregnant women who were not affected by COVID-19 during pregnancy. Maternal laboratory examination did not exhibit significant variations except for pl

Pregnancy Outcomes Associated With Anemia in the First Trimester and Anemia Resolution by Late Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence related to anemia in early pregnancy, and its resolution or persistence by late pregnancy, is limited. We evaluated pregnancy outcomes associated with anemia in early pregnancy and resolution compared with persistence in late pregnancy. METHODS: We used the Merative™ Marketscan ® Commercial Database of nationwide insurance claims (2018-2023) and included pregnant individuals without hereditary anemias. We used hemoglobin and hematocrit to identify anemia in early pregnancy (before 14 weeks of gestation) and late pregnancy (at or after 24 weeks of gestation). Pregnancy outc

Recognizing uterine torsion as a differential diagnosis in pregnant cats with severe anemia to provide appropriate and timely care in the absence of a definitive presurgical diagnosis.

A pregnant female domestic longhair cat ~8 mo of age was referred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) for a diagnostic evaluation of severe anemia (PCV: 10.8%) after a 2-day period of lethargy. A CBC, serum biochemistry profile, FeLV/FIV testing, and abdominal radiographs were completed and did not determine a cause for the anemia. Abdominal ultrasonography identified 1 viable and 6 nonviable and fetuses, anechoic fluid in the uterus, and a mild volume of peritoneal effusion. A whole-blood transfusion and C-section with ovariohysterectomy were performed even

Using Late C-reactive Protein Measurement in Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn to Predict Bacteremia and Reduce Blood Sampling Frequency.

Background Frequent blood draws in neonates pose significant challenges, including procedural pain, risk of anemia, and increased healthcare burden. Hospitalized neonates with respiratory distress often undergo multiple blood tests to rule out bacterial infections, despite the low incidence of neonatal bacteremia. C-reactive protein (CRP) levels rise 10-12 hours post-infection, suggesting that early testing may not be optimal for predicting bacteremia. This study evaluates whether delaying the initial blood test and relying on a single blood draw can effectively predict neonatal bacteremia, ai

Experimental lead paint poisoning in nonhuman primates. II. Clinical pathologic findings and behavioral effects.

Oral administration of lead-containing paint to rhesus monkeys induced anemia, more profound in older primates. Erythrocytes were microcytic and hypochromic, but tended to become macrocytic terminally. Stippled erythrocytes were increased in all poisoned monkeys, especially in those with high blood lead levels and anemia. Proteinuria, glycosuria, casts and sloughed tubular cells containing acid-fast inclusion bodies were found on urinalysis. Terminal elevations of blood urea nitrogen were associated with profound anemia and renal tubular damage. Repeated blood lead values over 200 microgram/dl

Effect of Daily Iron Supplementation on Infantile Iron Homeostasis in Preterm Infants.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of unified iron supplementation and identify the factors related to the iron homeostasis among preterm infants. Method: A total of 250 preterm infants were divided into neonatal anemic (NA, n = 154) and non-neonatal anemic group (NNA, n = 96). Iron supplements at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day were given from 40 weeks' gestational age to 6 months. Iron status parameters were measured at 3 and 6 months, respectively. Prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), and the correlated factors were analyzed. Growth and

Anemia, Iron Supplementation, and the Brain.

The developing brain is particularly vulnerable to extrinsic environmental events such as anemia and iron deficiency during periods of rapid development. Studies of infants with postnatal iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia clearly demonstrated negative effects on short-term and long-term brain development and function. Randomized interventional trials studied erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and hemoglobin-based red blood cell transfusion thresholds to determine how they affect preterm infant neurodevelopment. Studies of red blood cell transfusion components are limited in preterm neo

A mutation in a mitochondrial transmembrane protein is responsible for the pleiotropic hematological and skeletal phenotype of flexed-tail (f/f) mice.

We have studied the flexed-tail (f) mouse to gain insight into mammalian mitochondrial iron metabolism. Flexed-tail animals have axial skeletal abnormalities and a transient embryonic and neonatal anemia characterized by pathologic intramitochondrial iron deposits in erythrocytes. Mitochondrial iron accumulation is the hallmark of sideroblastic anemias, which typically result from defects in heme biosynthesis or other pathways that lead to abnormal erythroid mitochondrial iron utilization. To clone the f gene, we used positional cloning techniques, and identified a frameshift mutation in a mit

Choriocarcinoma in infant and mother: a case report.

We present a case of gestational choriocarcinoma that developed in a pregnant woman with metastases to her baby. In this case, severe anemia and hepatomegaly of the baby were noticed after delivery. Despite intensive treatments, the tumor progressed rapidly, and the baby died at the age of 38 days. Accurate diagnosis was made after autopsy. When the baby's mother visited our hospital again at 4 months postpartum, there were widespread multiple metastases to her lungs and liver. We want to emphasize that if a neonate or infant has anemia and/or hepatomegaly, it is necessary to be aware of the p

Inherited ADMATS13 deficiency: When to evoke the in the newborn?

Inherited ADMATS13 or Upshaw-Schulman syndrome (USS) is caused by the deficiency of the Von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of thrombocytopenia reversible by fresh frozen plasma (FFP) infusions, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and microvascular thrombosis leading to ischemic damage of multiple organs with end stage renal failure, or neurological sequelae in the absence of appropriate treatment. The typically reported features of USS in neonates are severe jaundice with hyperbilirubinemia, thrombocytopenia and /or combs negative hemolytic anemia

Early indicators of neonatal-onset hereditary thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal-onset hereditary thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (hTTP) is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity. It begins with jaundice, similar to infants with ABO incompatibility. OBJECTIVE: To explore early indicators of neonatal-onset hTTP. METHODS: This study was a retrospective case series of newborns with hTTP and ABO incompatibility. We compared the clinical characteristics and laboratory test results in these two groups. RESULTS: This study included four hTTP patients and 20 ABO-incompatible newborns. All patients manifested disease during the neonatal period. There were

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence in a case of monoamniotic twins.

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) complicates up to 6% of monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies, typically in the late second or third trimester. The presence of only a few and very small arteriovenous vascular anastomoses characterizes the underlying angioarchitecture at the chorionic plate in cases of TAPS. In monoamniotic twins, large vascular anastomoses can usually be seen at the placental vascular equator, and therefore one would not expect the development of TAPS in monoamniotic twins. We report a case of TAPS in a monoamniotic pregnancy at 26 + 5 weeks' gestation which respo
