Dregea volubilis (family Asclepediaceae) is widely used as anthelmintic in traditional system of medicine in eastern and southern part of India. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of the methanol extract of D. volubilis leaves (MEDV) and to observe its effect through SEM study. Live parasites (trematode Paramphistomum explanatum) were collected from buffalo in 0.9% phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). It was incubated at 37 ± 1°C in media containing either no extract (control), the test drug, MEDV at four dose levels (10, 25, 50, and 100 mg/ml) or the standard drug, al

BACKGROUND: Sensitive diagnostic tools are required for an accurate assessment of prevalence and intensity of helminth infections in areas undergoing regular deworming, and for monitoring anthelmintic drug efficacy. We compared the diagnostic accuracy of the Kato-Katz and FLOTAC techniques in the frame of a drug efficacy trial.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Stool samples from 343 Zanzibari children were subjected to duplicate Kato-Katz thick smears and the FLOTAC basic technique in a baseline screening in early 2009. The FLOTAC showed a higher sensitivity than the Kato-Katz method for the d

The current accepted standard for evaluating the efficacy of gastrointestinal anthelmintic drugs is necropsy of infected animals followed by a comparison of worm counts between treated and non-treated groups. In this study capsule endoscopy, a minimally invasive method of imaging the small intestine of humans, is evaluated as a possible alternative to necropsy for the purposes of worm quantification in dogs. Eighteen Beagle dogs were included in this study. These dogs were part of a separate trial intended to determine the efficacy of various candidate parasiticides against Ancylostoma caninum

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of Iris hookeriana Linn. rhizome against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. A worm motility inhibition assay was used for in vitro study and a faecal egg count reduction assay was used for an in vivo study. The in vitro study revealed anthelmintic effects of crude aqueous extracts and crude ethanolic extracts on live Trichuris ovis worms (P < or = 0.05) as evident from their paralysis and/or death at 8 h after exposure. The aqueous extracts of I. hookeriana resulted in a mean worm motility inhibition of 54.0%, while ethano

Laboratory golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were infected with Necator americanus under several different parasite and host conditions to optimize the model for testing anthelminthic drugs. The results confirmed that male hamsters were more susceptible to infection than females. Host age in the range of 5-15 weeks was not a factor that impacted on adult worm burden, and similar worm burdens were achieved using doses of 150, 250 or 500 N. americanus L3 (NaL3). The largest numbers of adult hookworms were recovered on days 21-28 post-infection, with a significant decrease at days 40-50 post

The bioavailability and anthelmintic activity of albendazole-cyclodextrin complexes (ABZ-CDC) compared to albendazole suspensions in carboxymethylcellulose (ABZ-CMC) was assessed in a mouse model for Trichinella infections. Swiss CD-1 mice experimentally infected with T. spiralis were treated with both formulations against enteral (adult worms) and parenteral (migrating and encysted larvae). Oral bioavailability was assessed in age matched mice treated with 50 mg/kg of both formulations. The anthelmintic effects and plasma concentration of the active metabolite albendazole-sulphoxide (ABZSO) e

BACKGROUND: Helminth (worm) infections are widespread and are thought to contribute to poor nutritional status, anaemia, and impaired growth and learning in children.
OBJECTIVES: To summarise the effects of anthelmintic drug treatment in children in relation to their growth and cognitive performance.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group trials register, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Medline, Embase and the reference lists of articles. We also contacted experts in the field.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised and quasi-randomised trials of drug treatment

Several derivatives of 2-methylthiobenzimidazoles were synthesized and assayed for anthelmintic activity. Following these studies, 2-methylthio-5-(1-chloronaphthyloxy-2)-6-chlorobenzimidazole (G-1557) has been selected as a tichinellacide for detailed investigations.

A study was carried out between March 1990 and February 1991 to determine the prevalence and intensity of hookworm infection in 151 primary schoolchildren, aged 6-12 years, in Jalaripet, a slum area in South India predominantly inhabited by fishermen. Pre-treatment stool samples were processed by a modified formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique to determine ova counts. All children were treated with pyrantel pamoate and post-chemotherapy stools were collected over 48 h to recover expelled worms. The overall prevalence of hookworm infection was 45% and the mean egg count was 192 eggs/g

Localization of different enzymes of PEP-succinate pathway has been done in Setaria cervi, a bovine filarial worm. Succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase were localized in mitochondria rich particulate fraction while all other enzymes were cytosolic. The in vitro effect of certain antifilarial/anthelmintic agents on these enzymes was also investigated. Sumarmin, at low concentration, could cause a marked inhibition of most of the enzymes of this pathway. Centperazine, an antifilarial drug being developed by CDRI showed significant inhibitory action on pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydroge

A series of 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,12b-octahydropyrazino[2,1-alpha][2] benzazepine derivatives was prepared and the cestocidal activity of the compounds evaluated in an in vitro Taenia crassiceps screen. Many of these derivatives proved to be highly active, and 2-(cyclohexylcarbonyl)-4-oxo-1,2,3,4,6,7,8,12b- octahydropyrazino[2,1-alpha][2]benzazepine, epsiprantel (BAN) (22), was selected for further development. The structure-activity relationships are discussed.

Netobimin (coded SCH 32481, Schering Corporation), a new broad-spectrum anthelmintic having both fasciolicidal and nematocidal properties was evaluated for efficacy against mature Fasciola hepatica infections in sheep. The trial was conducted with 30 cross-bred spring lambs, each experimentally infected with 250 F. hepatica metacercariae. A single treatment of netobimin was administered at 17 weeks post-infection (PI) by oral drench at 7.5 or 20 mg kg-1 body weight while 10 animals remained as untreated controls. At necropsy (either 1 or 2 weeks post-treatment), the mean number of adult flukes

The compound, 3, 5-dibromo-2'-chloro-4'-isothiocyanatosalicylanilide, has been tested against various nematode and cestode parasites in experimental and domestic animals. It shoved 100% activity against Ancylostoma ceylanicum, A tubaeformis, Syphacia obvelata, ascaridia galli, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris sp., Gnathostoma spinigerum, Hymenolepis nana, Raillietina spp. and Taenia spp. in doses 25-70 mg/kg given in single or multiple administrations.

The anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole was evaluated as an oral drench at dosages of 15.0, 10.0, and 7.5 mg/kg of body weight in 3 groups crossbred Brahman calves (n = 12 group) infected with Fasciola hepatica. Although posttreatment fluke ova counts for the 3 albendazole treatment groups were significantly (P less than 0.01) lower (av 82%) than were counts in nontreated calves, there were no significant differences in the responses to the different albendazole treatments. At necropsy, adult fluke counts in treated calves were lower (P less than 0.05) than were counts in nontreated calves, b
