Update: Malaria, U.S. Armed Forces, 2021.

Malaria infection remains an important health threat to U.S. service members who are located in endemic areas because of long-term duty assignments, participation in shorter-term contingency operations, or personal travel. In 2021, a total of 20 service members were diagnosed with or reported to have malaria. This was the lowest number of annual cases during the 10-year surveillance period (i.e., January 2012-December 2021) and represents a 28.6% decrease from the 28 cases identified in 2020. The relatively low numbers of cases during 2012-2021 mainly reflect decreases in cases acquired in Afg

[A 12-year-old girl with blisters on the arm].

This case concerns a girl with geometrically round blisters, mainly on the left arm since 1 month. Histopathologic examination of a skin biopsy showed a necrotic epidermis with subepidermalclefting suggesting thermal damage. Recently, similar thermal burns have been observed more often in adolescents following a so-called 'deo challenge'.

Update: Malaria, U.S. Armed Forces, 2019.

Malaria infection remains an important health threat to U.S. service members who are located in endemic areas because of long-term duty assignments, participation in shorter-term contingency operations, or personal travel. In 2019, a total of 35 service members were diagnosed with or reported to have malaria. This represents a 40.7% decrease from the 59 cases identified in 2018. The relatively low numbers of cases during 2012-2019 mainly reflect decreases in cases acquired in Afghanistan, a reduction due largely to the progressive withdrawal of U.S. forces from that country. Although the numbe

Yemen: Cholera outbreak and the ongoing armed conflict.

Yemen was affected by a major cholera epidemic in 2016, while a civil war, which has devastated the country since March 2015, has exacerbated the humanitarian situation. Cholera is a disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera, thus this study aims to analyze the epidemiological features of the outbreak and explore the relation of the outbreak to the current armed conflict situation. The data were obtained from the national surveillance system in Yemen. This contains details of 15,074 cases registered as suspected cholera patients per governorate from week 39 to 52 in 2016. In addition to t…

Health care for children in Indian Armed Forces.

Children of Armed Forces personnel constitute 33% of the clientele dependant on our healthcare. Various child health indicators and immunization coverage of Indian Armed Forces children is better than the national figures. With improved patient care, it has been observed that the morbidity and mortality pattern of diseases affecting the children of Armed Forces personnel has shown a change from infectious diseases in the past to more of chronic complex disorders at present. Hospital admissions of children in military hospitals due to nutritional and infectious diseases have reduced and constit…

A Call to Arms: Wartime Blood Donor Recruitment.

To ensure an adequate blood supply, blood collection agencies must design campaigns to recruit and maintain an active donor pool. Such campaigns generally appeal to altruism and humanitarianism, which donors most commonly cite as their reasons for donating. However, large donor registries and the widespread recruitment campaigns that sustain them did not become a necessity until the technology for the collection, storage, and transfusion of blood had advanced to a point that enabled the establishment of transfusion services that could provide large amounts of stored blood to meet high demands.

Vaccinations in prisons: A shot in the arm for community health.

From the first day of imprisonment, prisoners are exposed to and expose other prisoners to various communicable diseases, many of which are vaccine-preventable. The risk of acquiring these diseases during the prison sentence exceeds that of the general population. This excess risk may be explained by various causes; some due to the structural and logistical problems of prisons and others to habitual or acquired behaviors during imprisonment. Prison is, for many inmates, an opportunity to access health care, and is therefore an ideal opportunity to update adult vaccination schedules. The tradit

It causes a spectru … any tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, including Belize, Iraq and Afghanistan where UK Armed Forces may be deployed. It can present a potentially serious threat to military personnel deployed in endemic areas due to the possibility of long-term sequelae of infection.

An unusual presentation of a swollen arm: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Subclavian vein thrombosis is a rare but potentially fatal condition that most often occurs iatrogenically or in the context of malignancy. Here we report the case of an active, healthy 32-year-old woman who presented with subtle findings of arm pain, paresthesias and skin changes of acute onset and was subsequently diagnosed with upper extremity deep vein thrombosis and subclavian stenosis, and was started on a course of oral antithrombotics. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old right-handed Caucasian woman presented to her family medicine clinic with left shoulder pain and numbnes…

Update: malaria, U.S. Armed Forces, 2013.

U.S. service members are at risk of acquiring malaria infection when they are present in endemic areas because of long term duty assignments, participation in shorter term contingency operations, or personal travel. The numbers of cases among service members in 2012 (n=40) and 2013 (n=30) were the lowest reported during the past ten years. In 2013 over one-third of cases were attributed to service in Afghanistan (n=11) and six cases were linked to Africa. Nine cases were caused by Plasmodium vivax; eight cases were caused by P. falciparum; and one-third were reported as "unspecified" malaria.

A modified single-armed technique for microsurgical vasoepididymostomy.

This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified single-armed suture technique for microsurgical vasoepididymostomy (VE) in patients with epididymal obstructive azoospermia. From September 2011 to December 2011, microsurgical two-suture longitudinal intussusception VEs were performed using our modified single-armed suture technique in 17 men with epididymal obstructive azoospermia at our hospital. Two of these patients underwent repeated VEs after previous failed VEs, and one patient underwent unilateral VE because of an occlusion of the left abdominal vas deferens. The presence of sp…

Update: malaria, U.S. Armed Forces, 2011.

U.S. service members are at risk of malaria when they are assigned to endemic areas (e.g., Korea), participate in operations in endemic areas (e.g., Afghanistan, Africa) and visit malarious areas during personal travel. In 2011, 124 service members were reported with malaria. Nearly three-fourths of cases were presumably acquired in Afghanistan (n=91) and one-fifth were considered acquired in Africa (n=24). One-quarter of cases were caused by P. vivax and one-fifth by P. falciparum (including 6 Afghanistan-acquired infections); most cases were reported as "unspecified" malaria. Malaria was dia

Management of Zygomatic Complex Fracture in Armed Forces.

INTRODUCTION: The Armed Forces personnel are exposed to various kinds of injuries due to the nature of their duties. Increase in motorized population without taking protective measures and rise in violence has contributed towards maxillofacial injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, aetiology and management of injuries resulting in fracture of the Zygomatic complex in Armed Forces personnel and their families. METHODS: This study was conducted at Command Military Dental Centre (EC). Out of 90 maxillofacial injuries, 40 individuals (44.4%) were treated for Zygomatic com…

Gemfibrozil, stretching arms beyond lipid lowering.

Gemfibrozil is long known for its ability to reduce the level of triglycerides in the blood circulation and to decrease the risk of hyperlipidemia. However, a number of recent studies reveal that apart from its lipid-lowering effects, gemfibrozil can also regulate many other signaling pathways responsible for inflammation, switching of T-helper cells, cell-to-cell contact, migration, and oxidative stress. In this review, we have made an honest attempt to analyze various biological activities of gemfibrozil and associated mechanisms that may help to consider this drug for different human disord
