Insects as weapons of war, terror, and torture.

For thousands of years insects have been incorporated into human conflict, with the goals of inflicting pain, destroying food, and transmitting pathogens. Early methods used insects as "found" weapons, functioning as tactical arms (e.g., hurled nests) or in strategic habitats (e.g., mosquito-infested swamps). In the twentieth century the relationship between insects and disease was exploited; vectors were mass-produced to efficiently deliver pathogens to an enemy. The two most sophisticated programs were those of the Japanese in World War II with plague-infected fleas and cholera-coated flies

Toxoplasma infection and response to novelty in mice.

Three groups of mice were infected with Toxoplasma and used for behavioral testing using a Y-maze. One group was infected when adult and two groups congenitally, one of these born to dams infected during gestation, the other to dams chronically infected prior to mating. In an initial habituation period each mouse was exposed to a black arm and stem of the maze, entrance to a white arm being blocked by a transparent door. In a subsequent free-choice trial both arms were black and the mouse was free to explore all parts of the maze. During both periods infected mice were more active than control

Operationalizing the One Health approach in a conflict-affected setting: A scientometric review of policy foundations, systemic gaps, and future pathways in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The One Health approach integrates human, animal, plant, and environmental health through multisectoral collaboration and is increasingly recognized as essential for addressing zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food security, and ecosystem degradation. Ukraine has formally adopted One Health principles through national strategies and international partnerships; however, the ongoing full-scale military conflict has profoundly disrupted health, veterinary, and environmental systems, challenging effective implementation. This study aimed to evaluate the curren

Conflict and Cholera: Yemen's Man-Made Public Health Crisis and the Global Implications of Weaponizing Health.

The cholera epidemic in Yemen, which began in October 2016 and reached its peak in 2017, was the largest disease outbreak in modern history. Suspected cases topped 1 million, and there were more than 2,000 confirmed deaths in the first 8 months of the outbreak. Although cholera is an ancient disease, and there were other countries around the globe experiencing outbreaks at the same time as the outbreak in Yemen, Yemen's outbreak had a number of unique features. The outbreak spread at an unprecedented pace and has been directly linked to the country's ongoing armed conflict. In this article we

The mirror world of motor inhibition: the alien hand syndrome in chronic stroke.

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is rare, but important due to its disabling impact on everyday life. The determining characteristic of AHS is intermanual conflict, a type of inhibitory motor behaviour that occurs against willed action. Its components have previously been described as single case reports, but not as a systematic study. This review includes eight chronic cases, all of which are due to infarcts of the anterior cerebral artery. Clinical investigation included testing of motor behaviour related to everyday activities, such as tying shoelaces, lighting a candle and other bimanual tasks. V

Injury patterns in a war zone: A comparative analysis of civilians and military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Modern armed conflicts increasingly affect both civilians and defense forces, resulting in heterogeneous injury patterns driven by diverse mechanisms. Direct comparative data between these populations treated within the same healthcare system remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare injury mechanisms, anatomical injury patterns, injury severity, and early clinical outcomes between civilians and defense forces casualties treated at a single tertiary trauma center during an active conflict. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of all consecutive war-related trauma admission…

Enhancing resiliency and promoting prosocial behavior among Tanzanian primary-school students: A school-based intervention.

Children in Sub-Saharan Africa are living under chronic adversity due to poverty, serious health issues, physical and sexual abuse, and armed conflicts. These highly stressful conditions have deleterious effects on their mental health and socio-emotional adjustment. Since many children lack adequate access to mental health care, culturally adapted school-based resiliency programs could provide a resource to scaffold their development and promote their mental health. This study evaluated the efficacy of a universal school-based intervention in enhancing the resiliency of Tanzanian primary schoo…

The effects of war-related experiences on mental health symptoms of individuals living in conflict zones: a longitudinal study.

On October 7, 2023, a large-scale attack in southern Israel and the subsequent war resulted in extensive loss of life and injuries, with many individuals experiencing traumatic losses, such as family members or close friends being killed or kidnapped. This study aims to longitudinally examine its effects on mental health, specifically, clinical symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We anticipated greater symptom severity among individuals who experienced traumatic loss, were forcibly displaced, or suffered income loss, as well as among women and members of

[Therapeutic remedies and medical propaganda on influenza in Mexico in 1918: ideas and knowledge sets].

This article explores medical thought on the impact of the influenza pandemic of 1918 in Mexico. It analyzes scientific ideas on the etiology of the flu, as reflected in the types of remedies and medical prescriptions published in the press and in health bulletins. It then goes deeper into the topic by examining the international historic context, dominated by the war. In Mexico, years of armed conflict unleashed by the Revolution exacerbated living conditions among the population: starvation, typhus, smallpox and other infectious diseases were present before and during the outbreak of the pan

Utilizing peer educators to increase genetic testing for prostate cancer among black males: results of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Black males have low rates of genetic testing for prostate cancer (PCa). Peer-based strategies have not been tested for PCa genetic testing. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a peer-based educational intervention about PCa genetic testing for Black males in a community setting. METHODS: Black males, ages 35 to 69, were randomized to either a group-based discussion led by a peer educator who explained PCA and the risks and benefits of genetic testing or standard informational materials with no interaction with a peer educator. Participants completed baseline and endpoint surveys a
