We report an aortographic-pathological correlation in a patient with Takayasu arteritis. The inflammatory activity in Takayasu arteritis gradually subsides and accordingly, the histological appearance goes through a cycle of changes, ranging from acute florid inflammation to an old scarred vessel. At gross pathological inspection, the aortic intima frequently shows longitudinal wrinkling and tree-barking indistinguishable from syphilitic aortitis. In other instances, secondary atherosclerosis totally obscures the underlying changes of aortitis. In such instances, close search at various levels…

The renal papilla has a double blood supply - from both the vasa recta and the calyceal arteries. The importance of the latter supply is not established. A case of polyarteritis associated with papillary necrosis is reported, in which the calyceal vessels, supplying the area, show acute necrotizing arteritis and occlusion. The pathophysiological and clinical implications are discussed.

The clinical syndrome of polymyalgia rheumatica is reviewed. The relationship of this disease with temporal arteritis is discussed, and I consider both syndromes have a pathological basis of generalised giant cell arteritis.Seven cases of polymyalgia and four cases of temporal arteritis were recorded during the six-year period (1969-1975) in one general practice. The outlines of management are discussed, with a plea for earlier recognition of the syndromes of polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis in general practice.

The small vessel's necrotizing angiitis (necrotizing microangiitis (NMA), leucocytoclastic angiitis) form a continuous spectrum from the exclusively cutaneous forms of Gougreot, to those which seriously affect the viscera, as the very acute and fatal cases of Zeek, passing through a series of intermediate phases, in which Schönlein-Henoch's purpura is found. In all of these clinical forms, the existence of an allergic mechanism has been suggested from their origin itself and in 1964 Alarcón-Segovia and Brown grouped them under the common denominator of allergic angiitis. Later investigations a

Giant cell arteritis (GCA, also called temporal arteritis) is a rare and Takayasu arteritis (TA) is an even rarer autoimmune disease (AID), both of which present with inflammatory vasculitis of large and medium size arteries. The risk factors are largely undefined but disease susceptibility has been associated with human leukocyte antigen locus. Population-level familial risk is not known. In the present nation-wide study we describe familial risk for GCA and for GCA and TA with any other AID based on the Swedish hospital diagnoses up to years 2012. Family relationships were obtained from the …

An imported carrier stallion (A) from Europe was implicated in causing an extensive outbreak of equine viral arteritis (EVA) on a Warmblood breeding farm in Pennsylvania, USA. Strains of equine arteritis virus (EAV) present in the semen of two carrier stallions (A and G) on the farm were compared to those in tissues of foals born during the outbreak, as well as viruses present in the semen of two other stallions that became persistently infected carriers of EAV following infection during the outbreak. The 2822 bp segment encompassing ORFs 2-7 (nt 9807-12628; which encode the G(S), GP3, GP4, G(…

Large-vessel vasculitis (LVV) encompasses Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and giant cell arteritis (GCA), both characterized by granulomatous inflammation of large arteries. While these diseases have distinct clinical features, the emergence of large-vessel GCA (LV-GCA) highlights an area of overlap with late-onset TAK. Although T cell- and macrophage-driven inflammation represents a shared hallmark, the contribution of B cells and autoantibodies remains less clearly defined. This review comparatively summarizes B cell mediated responses and autoantibody involvement in TAK and GCA. TAK demonstrates s…

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), frequently associated with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), and Takayasu's arteritis (TAK) are characterized by extensive vascular remodeling that results in occlusion and stenosis. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the onset of GCA/PMR and TAK are still hypothetical. However, similarities and differences in the immunopathology and clinical phenotypes of these diseases point toward a possible link between them. The loss of tolerance in the periphery, a breakdown of tissue barriers, and the development of granulomatous vasculitis define a disease continuum. H…

PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW: Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a chronic, large-vessel vasculitis disproportionately affecting young women. The consequences of vascular inflammation include stenotic and occlusive disease with resultant end organ ischemia and dysfunction impacting quality of life. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in the assessment of disease activity and damage and treatment of TAK.
RECENT FINDINGS: Distinguishing disease activity from vascular damage in patients with TAK is challenging. The PET Vascular Activity Score (PETVAS) and Vasculitis Activity using MR and PET Vas…

In this article, we review the epidemiology of giant cell arteritis (GCA), the most common form of vasculitis in older adults, which primarily affects large and medium-sized arteries. We discuss various epidemiological aspects of GCA, including its incidence, genetic factors, the potential role of seasonality, environmental influences, and infections as possible triggers. Additionally, we explore its association with polymyalgia rheumatica and the significance of major complications, such as the development of aneurysmal disease in GCA, and the decline in the frequency of visual loss. The impa…
