AlF3-Enriched Interphase Design Enables Comprehensive Electrochemical Performance Enhancement in Al-Ion Batteries.

Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage owing to their elemental abundance, low cost, safety, and high anode capacity. However, their development is hindered by the limited reversibility of Al plating/stripping on Al metal anodes and cathode structural degradation under high-voltage operation, resulting in short cycle life and limited energy density. These challenges originate from an incomplete understanding of how interphase components and properties regulate electrode reactions. Here, we systematically investigate the interphase properties in AIBs and reve

COVID-19-inspired "artificial virus" to combat drug-resistant bacteria by membrane-intercalation- photothermal-photodynamic multistage effects.

COVID-19 threatens human life because of the super destructiveness produced from its coronal morphology and strong transmembrane infection based on spike glycoprotein. Inspired by the coronal morphology of COVID-19 and its means of infecting, we designed an "artificial virus" with coronal morphology based on the concept of "defeating superbacteria with superviruses" by self-assembling a transacting activator of transduction peptide with triple-shell porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) embedded with cobalt nanoparticles to forcefully infect methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA

Management of a post-radiotherapy xerostomic patient--a case report.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to fabricate complete denture with palatal reservoir filled with artificial saliva for a post radiotherapy edentulous patient. BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is a subjective complaint rather than a disease. It is caused by irradiation, medication, Sjogren's syndrome & neurological factors such as stress. Radiotherapeutic treatment of head and neck cancer patients often causes long term dysfunction involving their salivary function, swallowing capabilities & taste. All three of these domains are affected by radiation- induced damage to the salivary glands. Thi

[Expiration-like movement and spino-bulbo-spinal reflex in a patient with apneic coma caused by anoxic encephalopathy].

A 72-year-old female patient, hospitalized for parkinsonism, suffered cardiopulmonary arrest without any certain causes. The patient was successfully resuscitated and her life was sustained by artificial ventilator for 100 days. All brainstem reflexes were absent, and flat electroencephalogram and no response of brainstem auditory evoked potentials were confirmed twice with an interval of over 6 hours. Flexion of the arm induced reflex rectus abdominis muscle contraction, resembling expiratory movement. Muscle stretch reflexes on rectus abdominis were hyperactive. The expiration-like movement

Old, new and revised aspects of artificial organs.

Retrograde perfusion of the coronary veins with oxygenated blood is effective. Closed chest transarterial left ventricular bypass was developed by Hans Zwart to support the failing left ventricle. Transapical left ventricular bypass started by Alex Kralios, later studied by Jeffrey Peters et al, became effective when filters were introduced into the system--first surviving patient! One must be prepared to support both ventricles. Retrograde transpulmonary bypass (Kralios) is as yet only experimental. The blood is pumped from one occluded pulmonary artery into the aorta. Plasmapheresis removes

Artificial infestation of white-tailed deer with ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) to study tick-host interactions.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are a main host for the adult life stages of tick species of medical and veterinary importance. Since white-tailed deer play a vital role in tick ecology, research has been conducted to understand this tick-host relationship. To date, research involving captive white-tailed deer and artificial infestation of these animals with ticks has focused on host suitability, the role of white-tailed deer in tick-borne diseases, and anti-tick vaccine research. The methodology reported for these studies was at times not descriptive and inconsistent regarding how

Recent Advances in Lycopene for Food Preservation and Shelf-Life Extension.

In recent years, there has been increasing concern about the safety of additives used to extend the shelf-life of food products. As a result, lycopene, a natural phytochemical compound, has attracted attention, as it has been demonstrated to be a potential alternative to traditional artificial antioxidants, with significant health benefits when applied to food preservation. Based on this, this review introduces the specific forms of lycopene currently used as an antioxidant in foods, both in its naturally occurring forms in fruits and vegetables and in artificially added forms involving techno

UV radiation triggers mycosporine-glutaminol-glucoside biosynthesis in Naganishia friedmannii FBU002, a non-pathogenic yeast.

AIMS: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) interferes with aspects of life on Earth. It is necessary for the synthesis of important molecules, as vitamin D, but it is harmful to organisms leading to photoaging and skin cancer. Artificial sunscreens prevent these harmful effects, but may be carcinogenic and neurotoxic; also they accumulate in the aquatic ecosystem, harming the environment and leading to coral bleaching. Most artificial sunscreens commercialized are fossil fuel derived and produced by the petrochemical industry. As society turns to bioeconomy, these artificial sunscreens may be substitut

[Comparative assessment of the intensity of caries among dental patients of older age groups in need of removable prosthetics, registered by a phthisiatician and their perception of an artificial ageist situation.].

Improving the quality of life of older age groups is an urgent problem of medicine, including its components: gerontology, phthisiology and dentistry. The objectives of the study are: to establish the importance of tuberculosis as an infection that causes the intensity of caries among patients of older age groups; assessment using the Palmore scale of gerontological ageism «The ageism survey» and patients' perception of an artificial situation of age inequality. The study involved elderly (n=122) and senile (n=121) persons with partial secondary adentia who needed removable dentures. The contr

Responses to artificial selection for locomotor activity: A focus on death feigning in red flour beetle.

Whole-organism performance, including locomotor activity, is an important fitness trait in many animals. Locomotor activity is often classified into sprint speed and locomotor endurance and differences in sprint speed and locomotor endurance affect on other traits such as life-history traits. Previous studies found that locomotor endurance, sprint speed and brain dopamine (DA) levels are correlated with artificial selection for death feigning (an anti-predator behaviour that we refer to as 'death-feigning syndrome') in some insect species. Thus, if the syndrome has a genetic basis, death feign

Conus hip prosthesis.

50 years ago, prosthetic replacement of the hip joint ushered in a new epoch in orthopaedics. Total hip replacement made it possible to remove a severely diseased, painful hip and restore normal function and a normal quality of life to the afflicted patient. The early results of total hip replacement are almost all spectacular and hip replacement has become the most successful type of orthopaedic surgery. These good results using an approach that was technically relatively simple resulted in a temptation to implant prosthetic hip joints with ever increasing frequency in ever younger patients.

[Progress in the treatment of single-sided deafness with artificial hearing aids].

Single-sided deafness(SSD) is a common disease. Compared with normal hearing people, unilateral deaf patients often suffer from the loss of sound source localization ability and speech recognition in complex environments due to the lack of binaural summation effect, squelch effect, spatial demasking effect, and the presence of head shadow effect. Patients' quality of life and professional activities are always poor. Therefore, this article will review the related definitions of SSD, epidemiology, hazards, and artificial hearing aids in the application of SSD patients.

A rare case of "runaway" pacemaker in a modern CPU-controlled pacemaker.

"Runaway" pacemaker is a rare entity that occurs when a malfunctioning artificial cardiac pacemaker abruptly accelerates its pacing rate above the set upper rate limit. This can result in life-threatening dysrhythmia. Runaway pacemaker used to occur more frequently in older model pacemakers, but now with newer pacemaker generators, runaway pacemaker is a rare entity. We report the case of a runaway pacemaker in a modern CPU-controlled pacemaker in a 79-year-old man presenting with lightheadedness and review the literature regarding this rare entity.

Maternal deprivation affects goat kids' stress coping behaviour.

Maternal deprivation early in life has been shown to disrupt neonates' development. Nevertheless, separating the young animals from their dams soon after birth remains a common practice in dairy farm husbandry. This study investigated the effects of different rearing conditions on goat kids' stress coping abilities. Twenty female kids were raised together with their dams ('dam-reared') in a herd composed of other lactating goats and kids, while twenty female kids were separated from their dams three days after birth and reared together with same-age peers ('artificially-reared') and visually s

Machine Learning in the Detection of the Glaucomatous Disc and Visual Field.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Early detection is of utmost importance as there is abundant evidence that early treatment prevents disease progression, preserves vision, and improves patients' long-term quality of life. The structure and function thresholds that alert to the diagnosis of glaucoma can be obtained entirely via digital means, and as such, screening is well suited to benefit from artificial intelligence and specifically machine learning. This paper reviews the concepts and current literature on the use of machine learning for detection of the gl

Optimization and advances in negative pressure wound therapy for the management of necrotizing fasciitis in the upper limb.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressing, life-threatening soft tissue infection, with upper limb NF posing a particularly serious threat to patient survival and quality of life. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has shown considerable advantages in accelerating wound healing and mitigating functional impairment. A retrospective study by Lipatov et al. demonstrated that NPWT significantly reduced the time needed for wound closure preparation while enhancing the success rate of local repair. Despite its benefits, certain limitations highlight the need for further optimization. T

Kynurenic acid as the neglected ingredient of commercial baby formulas.

The global increase in resorting to artificial nutritional formulas replacing breastfeeding has been identified among the complex causes of the obesity epidemic in infants and children. One of the factors recently recognized to influence metabolism and weight gain is kynurenic acid (KYNA), an agonist of G protein-coupled receptor (GPR35). Therefore the aim of the study was to determine the concentration of KYNA in artificial nutritional formulas in comparison with its level in human breast milk and to evaluate developmental changes in rats exposed to KYNA enriched diet during the time of breas
