Electroencephalographic Functional Connectivity Patterns in Children With Tourette Syndrome and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur and are linked to emotional and behavioral difficulties. However, their shared and distinct neural underpinnings, particularly in terms of functional connectivity, remain unclear. Here, we assessed how functional connectivity differs across TS and ADHD as well as its association with emotional and behavioral difficulties. METHODS: Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded from 137 children with TS (n = 51), ADHD (n = 24), or TS + ADHD (n = 29) or from typically developing contro

A systematic review of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in people living with cystic fibrosis.

There is a lack of research that has focused on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). Given ADHD is associated with executive functioning impairments, exploring ADHD in the context of living with cystic fibrosis (CF) is of great importance. The purpose of the current systematic review was to examine ADHD in pwCF across the lifespan in terms of its prevalence, its impact on various health outcomes, and treatments for managing ADHD. This systematic review followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Anal

Combined Methylphenidate and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Depression is a common comorbidity of adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the combination of methylphenidate and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is a frequently prescribed treatment. However, there is limited clinical evidence on the safety of this medication combination in adults with ADHD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of administering a combination of SSRI and methylphenidate in adults with ADHD and comorbid depression. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study obtained data from a nationwide claims database in South Korea

Reducing Risk in the Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among Adults With Comorbidities.

Recent widely publicized shortages in the U.S. supply of first-line medications for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are thought to reflect increases in public awareness, help seeking, and treatment. ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders and is typically identified in childhood. In adulthood, ADHD symptoms are less likely to include hyperactivity, but inattention, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation are common. Clinical evaluation of symptomatic adults who were not diagnosed as children requires corroboration of ADHD diagnostic symptoms in

Compressed cerebro-cerebellar functional gradients in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Both cortical and cerebellar developmental differences have been implicated in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Recently accumulating neuroimaging studies have highlighted hierarchies as a fundamental principle of brain organization, suggesting the importance of assessing hierarchy abnormalities in ADHD. A novel gradient-based resting-state functional connectivity analysis was applied to investigate the cerebro-cerebellar disturbed hierarchy in children and adolescents with ADHD. We found that the interaction of functional gradient between diagnosis and age was concentrated in

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and cortical structure in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSDP) is considered a risk factor for ADHD. While the mechanisms underlying this association are not well understood, MSDP may impact the developing brain in ways that lead to ADHD. Here, we investigated the effect of prenatal smoking exposure on cortical brain structures in children with ADHD using two methods of assessing prenatal exposure: maternal recall and epigenetic typing. Exposure groups were defined according to: (1) maternal recall (+MSDP: n = 24; -MSDP: n = 85) and (2) epigenetic markers (EM) (+EM: n = 14 -EM: n = 21). CIVET-1.1.12 and RMINC were

Managing Growth Deceleration Associated With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Stimulant-Induced Appetite Suppression.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been diagnosed in 9.8% of children ages 3 to 17 years in the United States according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2016 to 2019, and 62% of children with ADHD take medication as part of their treatment.1 Due to their well-established safety profile and high efficacy, central nervous system stimulants are used as first-line treatment for symptom reduction in children with ADHD.2 For each patient, benefits of stimulant medications must be weighed against risks, which may include appetite suppression and weight loss in

A giant trichobezoar in a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Trichobezoars are uncommon gastrointestinal concretions that develop due to the accumulation of ingested hair, predominantly affecting young females with concurrent psychiatric conditions like trichotillomania and Trichophagia. These masses typically form in the stomach but may also protrude into the intestines, potentially leading to severe complications if not promptly identified and treated. The present case study outlines the clinical manifestation, diagnostic complexities, surgical intervention, and postoperative care of a 10-year-old female patient with a sub

Specific brain imaging alterations underlying autistic traits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autistic traits (ATs) are frequently reported in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to examine ATs in children with ADHD from both behavioral and neuroimaging perspectives. METHODS: We used the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) to assess and define subjects with and without ATs. For behavioral analyses, 67 children with ADHD and ATs (ADHD + ATs), 105 children with ADHD but without ATs (ADHD - ATs), and 44 typically developing healthy controls without ATs (HC - ATs) were recruited. We collected resting-state functional magne

Psychoactive substance use in patients diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was originally treated as a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs mainly in children and tends to diminish or disappear with age, but we now know that symptoms persist into adulthood in over 50% of ADHD patients. Undiagnosed individuals often turn to psychoactive substance to minimize the negative aspects of functioning and improve quality of life. METHODS: The study was conducted online using random sampling through a Facebook group administered by physicians and targeted to patients diagnosed with ADHD. The study was naturalist

Attention/Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescent and Young Adult Males With Fragile X Syndrome.

This study characterized the rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescent and young adult males with fragile X syndrome (FXS) using a multi-method approach integrating a DSM-based parent interview (Children's Interview for Psychiatric Syndromes; P-ChIPS, Fristad et al., 1998) and a parent rating scale (Child Behavior Checklist; CBCL, Achenbach, 2001). Thirty-one males with FXS, aged 16-24 years, participated. Forty-two percent met DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and 35% exceeded the CBCL cut-offs. Agreement between the two classification methods was fair (κ = 0.38). Autism sy

Rare copy number variants in males and females with childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

While childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is more prevalent in males than females, genetic contributors to this effect have not been established. Here, we explore sex differences in the contribution of common and/or rare genetic variants to ADHD. Participants were from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study (N = 1253 youth meeting DSM-5 criteria for ADHD [mean age = 11.46 years [SD = 0.87]; 31% female] and 5577 unaffected individuals [mean age = 11.42 years [SD = 0.89]; 50% female], overall 66% White, non-Hispanic (WNH), 19% Black/African American, and 15% o

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A viable option?

Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from a range of cognitive and behavioral problems that severely impair their educational and occupational attainment. ADHD symptoms have been linked to structural and functional changes within and between different brain regions, particularly the prefrontal cortex. At the system level, reduced availability of the neurotransmitters dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) but also γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) have been repeatedly demonstrated. Recently, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques have been explored as treat

Frontal Beta Activity in the Meta-Intention of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have high theta and low beta activity in the frontal lobe. The higher the theta/beta ratio, the lower the level of central nervous system (CNS) cortical arousal. However, there is seldom evidence between electroencephalograms (EEGs) and the patient's intentionality to regulate the cortical activity of executive attention tasks. We investigated whether children with ADHD intended to improve their performance in executive attention tasks and whether that increased their brain activity. Fifty-one children with ADHD (ADHD) and 51 typica

Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Conduct Problems in Children and Adolescents with Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies focus on the potential factors that increase the potantial risks of obesity in children and adolescents. According to research for the past years, one of the factors that increases the risk of obesity may be attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We hypothesized that overweight/obese children and adolescents that apply to pediatric endocrinology for treatment would be at higher risk for ADHD symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the sample consisted of 55 children and adolescents aged between 6-14 years with body mass index greater than 95th p
