Real-world use of natalizumab in Austria: data from the Austrian Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Registry (AMSTR).

INTRODUCTION: With the approval of natalizumab in Europe in 2006, the Austrian Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Registry (AMSTR) was established. Here, we present data from this registry about effectiveness and safety of natalizumab in patients treated up to 14 years. PATIENTS/METHODS: Data retrieved from the AMSTR contained baseline characteristics and biannual documentation of annualised relapse rate (ARR) and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score as well as adverse events and reasons for discontinuation on follow-up visits. RESULTS: A total of 1596 natalizumab patients (71% women, n = 1…

Decline in acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding during COVID-19 pandemic after initiation of lockdown in Austria.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has spread rapidly around the world. The Austrian government implemented a lockdown on 16 March to contain further spread of the disease. We investigated the effects of lockdown on acute upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in Austria. METHODS: We contacted 98 Austrian hospitals performing emergency endoscopies. The hospitals were asked to report upper GI endoscopies performed for recent hematemesis, melena, or both, and exhibiting endoscopically visible signs of bleeding. The study period was from 3 weeks before (calendar Week 9) to 3 weeks after (Week 14) initiation of …

First confirmed record of Trichobilharzia franki Müller & Kimmig, 1994, from Radix auricularia (Linnaeus, 1758) for Austria.

Avian schistosomes are of medical and veterinary importance as they are responsible for the annually occurring cercarial dermatitis outbreaks. For Austria, so far, only Trichobilharzia szidati Neuhaus 1952 was confirmed on species level as causative agent of cercarial dermatitis. Here we present the first record of Trichobilharzia franki Müller & Kimmig 1994 in Austria. The species was detected during a survey of digenean trematodes in Upper Austrian water bodies. Furthermore, we provide DNA barcodes of T. franki as well as measurements of several parasite individuals to indicate the intraspec…

Recent Lifestyle Parameters Are Associated with Increasing Caesarean Section Rates among Singleton Term Births in Austria.

Caesarean section (CS) rates are increasing in many parts of the world, recently reaching about 20% worldwide. The postmodern lifestyle characteristics, obesity and delayed childbirth, have been put forward as the main reasons for high CS rates. The present study tests the association patterns between lifestyle parameters and delivery mode on a data set of 3786 births in Vienna between 2005 and 2013. The focus is exclusively on singleton term births. As well as maternal age, prepregnancy weight status, maternal body height and gestational weight gain, newborn size (birth weight, birth length,

Isolation of Brucella microti from mandibular lymph nodes of red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, in lower Austria.

From the mandibular lymph nodes of wild red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) hunted in the region of Gmünd, Lower Austria, two gram-negative, oxidase- and urease-positive, coccoid rod-shaped bacteria (strains 257 and 284) were isolated. Cells were fast growing, nonmotile, and agglutinated with monospecific anti-Brucella (M) serum. Both strains were biochemically identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi by using the API 20NE test. However, sequencing of the 16S rRNA and recA genes clearly identified strains 257 and 284 as Brucella spp. Further molecular analysis by omp2a/b gene sequencing, multilocus sequence …

Serum Eye Drops: Implementation, Upscaling, and Patient-Centered Care - Insights from a Blood Bank in Western Austria.

BACKGROUND: Serum eye drops (SEDs) have emerged as an important therapeutic option for the management of severe ocular surface diseases, particularly in cases refractory to conventional treatments. Despite their proven efficacy, the implementation and expansion of SED therapy in clinical practice present logistical, regulatory, and clinical challenges. Although we started producing SED rather recently in 2018 at the Central Institute for Blood Transfusion and Immunology in Innsbruck, Austria, we were producing more than 750 monthly packages in 2024. We were able to establish a service-oriented…

Theoretically Universal, Practically Unequal: Socio-Economic Inequalities in Healthcare Access for Long Covid-19 Patients in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Long Covid-19 (LC) patients have substantial treatment and care needs, yet research has shown that the majority of them experience healthcare access barriers. While qualitative studies indicate socio-economic and demographic access inequalities among LC patients, quantitative evidence remains limited. This study aims to assess socio-economic inequalities in healthcare access among LC patients in Austria, focusing on self-perceived barriers, facilitators and unmet healthcare needs. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional data were collected from adult LC patients through online and …

Human infestations with Fasciola hepatica in Austria between 1955 and 2025: data from a low-incidence country.

Although rare, human Fasciola hepatica (FH) infestations represent a clinically relevant parasitosis that can cause significant clinical manifestations and functional limitations, particularly affecting the liver. Laboratory tests typically reveal elevated white blood cell counts and absolute or relative eosinophilia. The Department of Medical Parasitology at the Institute for Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine, Center of Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology, Medical University of Vienna, is the national reference center for FH infestations in Austria. In this study, we assesse…

COVID-19 case fatality rate and infection fatality rate from 2020 to 2023: Nationwide analysis in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive analyses of COVID-19 case fatality rates (CFRs) and infection fatality rates (IFRs) that span the entire pandemic are not yet available but critical to retrospectively evaluate the COVID-19 disease burden and its related public health policies. We used nationwide individual participant data from Austria, the continental country with the highest SARS-CoV-2 testing rate per capita, to calculate COVID-19 CFR and estimate IFR covering the entire pandemic. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included all Austrian residents and covered the time from February 20…

Reducing overtreatment associated with overdiagnosis in cervical cancer screening-A model-based benefit-harm analysis for Austria.

A general concern exists that cervical cancer screening using human papillomavirus (HPV) testing may lead to considerable overtreatment. We evaluated the trade-off between benefits and overtreatment among different screening strategies differing by primary tests (cytology, p16/Ki-67, HPV alone or in combinations), interval, age and diagnostic follow-up algorithms. A Markov state-transition model calibrated to the Austrian epidemiological context was used to predict cervical cancer cases, deaths, overtreatments and incremental harm-benefit ratios (IHBR) for each strategy. When considering the s…

Identification and Characterization of "Candidatus Rickettsia Thierseensis", a Novel Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Species Detected in Austria.

Rickettsia spp. are the second most common pathogens detected in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Austria after Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Species belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG) are the causative agents for tick-borne rickettsiosis across the world. So far, only four SFG Rickettsia spp. were detected in Austria, namely R. helvetica, R. raoultii, R. monacensis and R. slovaca. Here, we describe the identification of a new SFG Rickettsia species detected in an I. ricinus tick. Sequencing of various rickettsial genes revealed a nucleotide sequence similarity of 99.6%, 98.5%, 97.3% and 98.…

Cost analysis of bluetongue virus serotype 8 surveillance and vaccination programmes in Austria from 2005 to 2013.

This study was designed to evaluate the costs between 2005 and 2013 of the national bluetongue virus (BTV) surveillance and vaccination programmes before, during and after the BTV serotype 8 (BTV-8) outbreak in Austria commencing in 2008. In addition to an assessment of the temporal development of costs, a spatial cost analysis was performed. Within the context of this study, the term 'costs' refers to actual financial expenditure and imputed monetary costs for contributions in-kind. Costs were financed directly by the private-public sectors, by the European Commission (EC), and (in-kind) by r…

Current skin of color representation in medical school dermatology education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH region).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dermatologic diagnosis relies heavily on visual recognition, yet educational resources predominantly depict lighter skin types. While underrepresentation of Skin of Color (SoC) in medical education has been demonstrated in North America, data from German-speaking countries remain lacking. This study assesses the SoC representation in dermatology curricula in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire-based study targeting dermatology departments at all medical schools in the DACH region (n = 57). RESULTS: The response rat…

Community-based osteoporosis prescreening using FRAX and portable pulse-echo ultrasound: a pilot study from Western Austria.

UNLABELLED: A community-based prescreening approach using the Austrian FRAX® model and portable pulse-echo ultrasound identified a substantial proportion of adults with findings that may warrant further osteoporosis evaluation. Our results suggest that local prescreening pathways could support earlier identification and referral, particularly in women. PURPOSE: Early identification of adults at increased osteoporosis risk remains challenging. We evaluated a community-based prescreening approach using Austrian FRAX® and portable pulse-echo ultrasound in adults from Tyrol, Western Austria. MET…
