Postprandial hypotension (PPH) is a major clinical problem in patients with autonomic failure such as that observed in multiple system atrophy (MSA). The pathophysiology of PPH remains unclear, although autonomic dysfunction and gastrointestinal vasoactive peptides have been suspected to participate in its pathogenesis. We measured blood pressure and plasma levels of glucose, insulin, noradrenaline, neurotensin, glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2 before and after meal ingestion in 24 patients with MSA to reveal the roles of the autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal vasoactive pept…

It is a well-established fact that the sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric nervous systems are affected at early stages in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is not yet clarified whether the earliest pathological events preferentially occur in any of these three divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Significant involvement of the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the heart and gastrointestinal tract has been documented in PD. Accumulating evidence suggests that the PD pathology spreads centripetally from the peripheral to central nervous system through autonomic nerve f…

UNLABELLED: Altered Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) function has been described in youth with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), but studies are scarce and rarely consider sex, nor both parasympathetic and sympathetic ANS measures. Stress regulation plays a key role in the emergence and maintenance of MDD. Here, we aimed to investigate ANS stress reactivity within a clinical sample of female and male youth with MDD compared to healthy controls (HCs). Parasympathetic and sympathetic ANS stress reactivity (Heart Rate, HR; Respiratory Heart Rate Variability, RespHRV; Pre-ejection Period, PEP) was st…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and serious complication after surgery. It is associated with postoperative neurocognitive disorder (PNCD). The vagal cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) has been hypothesized to play a role in POD/PNCD and may be a target for interventions such as transcutaneous auricular stimulation (taVNS). We aim to review associations of heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of vagal function with POD and postoperative immune reaction as well as taVNS as a potential preventive intervention for POD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Autonomous nerv

Changes in cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation observed in psychiatric disorders may be mitigated by antidepressants. We meta-analyzed and systematically reviewed studies examining antidepressants' effects on ANS outcomes, including heart rate variability (HRV). We conducted a PRISMA/MOOSE-compliant search of PubMed and Scopus until March 28th, 2022. We included randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) and pre-post studies, regardless of diagnosis. We pooled results in random-effects meta-analyses, pooling homogeneous study designs and outcomes. We conducted sensitivity analys…

PURPOSE: To study the effect of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction on glaucoma progression in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 40 cases of POAG patients who underwent regular reexamination for more than 3 years was performed. All participants were subjected to heart-rate variability (HRV) assessment. Patients were divided equally into the lowest and highest HRV groups according to the standard deviation value of the qualified normal to normal intervals (SDNN), a representative indicator of HRV. The lower the HRV, the more…

The immunomodulatory effect of the autonomic nervous system has raised considerable interest over the last decades. Studying the influence on the immune system and the role in inflammation of the sympathetic as well as the parasympathetic nervous system not only will increase our understanding of the mechanism of disease, but also could lead to the identification of potential new therapeutic targets for chronic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An imbalanced autonomic nervous system, with a reduced parasympathetic and increased sympathetic tone, has been…

Obesity and type 2 diabetes have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. These metabolic disorders, particularly obesity, are characterised by increased basal sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity but an impaired sympathetic response to certain stimuli, such as insulin. Although targeting the SNS may seem an attractive avenue for the pharmacological prevention and treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders, it remains unknown whether changes in SNS tone are primary and contribute to the development of these metabolic conditions or whether they develop secondary to the obese state

Dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Regarding motor disability, deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an effective treatment option in long lasting PD. The aims of this study were to examine whether STN stimulation has an influence on functions of the ANS and to compare these effects to those induced by levodopa. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during rest and orthostatic conditions, HR variability (HRV) and breathing-induced cutaneous sympathetic vasoconstriction (CVC) were tested in 14 PD patients treated wit…

These studies investigated the role of the autonomic nervous system in mediating the immunosuppressive effect of morphine on blood lymphocyte proliferation in rats. To determine the contribution of the autonomic nervous system, rats were pretreated with the ganglionic blocker chlorisondamine (5 mg/kg) prior to morphine (7 mg/kg) administration. Ganglionic blockade with chlorisondamine completely antagonized the inhibitory actions of morphine, suggesting that intact ganglionic transmission was required for the inhibition to occur. Blockade of postganglionic parasympathetic neurotransmission wit…

Thirty-five patients (age: 53 +/- 13 years) with dual A-V nodal pathways pattern were studied following autonomic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg and atropine 0.04 mg/kg). Six of them had "idionodal" paroxysmal reentrant supraventricular tachycardia. After autonomic blockade the dual A-V nodal pathways pattern remained in 20 patients (57%) and disappeared in 15; however, in the latter, the effective refractory period of the fast pathway decreased significantly and the disappearance of the slow pathway conduction may not have been real since the marked shortening of the fast pathway refractory

When the opiate antagonist naloxone is administered to anesthetized dogs subjected to hemorrhagic shock, there is a transient decrease in heart rate and sustained increases in mean arterial pressure, maximum left ventricular dp/dt, and cardiac output. Surgical cardiac denervation and pharmacologic blockade of autonomic receptors were employed to investigate the mechanisms of these two responses. The transient bradycardia was prevented by beta-adrenergic receptor blockade or cardiac denervation. The sustained response was unaffected by cardiac denervation, attenuated by either alpha- or beta-ad

Mast cells (MC) are ubiquitous in the body, and they are critical for not only in allergic diseases but also in immunity and inflammation, including having potential involvement in the pathophysiology of dysautonomias and neuroinflammatory disorders. MC are located perivascularly close to nerve endings and sites such as the carotid bodies, heart, hypothalamus, the pineal gland, and the adrenal gland that would allow them not only to regulate but also to be affected by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). MC are stimulated not only by allergens but also many other triggers including some from th…

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction was closely related to vitamin D (VD) deficiency, but the mechanism remained unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanism of VDdef on the function of cardiac ANS in rats.
METHODS: After 10 weeks of VD deficiency feeding, we successfully established a VD-deficient rat model. The body weight of rats was recorded, and the levels of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), creatinine (CRE), triglyceride (TG), hemoglobin (HG), and 25(OH)VD3 in serum were detected by corresponding kits. Short-time frequ…

Historically, studies on the neural basis of fear conditioning have emphasized the role of the central nervous system. However, there is growing evidence for the role of the autonomic nervous system in human fear conditioning. Here, we provide an overview of the sophisticated anatomical-functional interplay between the prefrontal cortex and heart-related dynamics in human fear conditioning and propose a theoretical model to conceptualize these psychophysiological processes, the neurovisceral integration model of fear (NVI-f). A richer understanding of the neurovisceral concomitants of this fun…
