BACKGROUND: Aircraft fire is recognized as an important risk factor for occupant fatality in aviation crashes, but its epidemiology has not been adequately studied.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines factors related to the occurrence of aircraft fire, ignition sources, and factors influencing rescue and firefighting in commuter and air taxi crashes.
METHODS: Commuter and air taxi crashes in 1983-88 that involved aircraft fire were analyzed using National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data, including NTSB supplemental forms on fire and on rescue and firefighting.
RESULTS: Aircraft fire was …

Over a 57-month period, 3,246 parachute jumps were performed in an air rescue reserve unit. During this time, the unit transitioned from a round static line parachute to a rectangular free falling parachute. The rates of 11 injuries per 1000 jumps and 600 lost man days per 1000 jumps were reduced to zero after the introduction of the new parachute.

Hepatic hemangiomas are relatively common benign hepatic tumors. Historically, a concern for potential traumatic rupture has influenced clinical judgment regarding optimal treatment. However, a review of the literature fails to demonstrate spontaneous or traumatic rupture as a common phenomenon. The following case report discusses an individual patient incidentally found to have large hepatic hemangiomas on CT scan during work-up for a traumatic minimally displaced pelvic fracture from parachuting. He was admitted to the general surgery service for observation. After several days of hemodynami

Although the sun is really far away from us, some solar activities could still influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems on Earth. Those time-varying conditions in space caused by the sun are also called solar storm or space weather. It is known that aviation activities can be affected during solar storms, but the exact effects of space weather on aviation are still unclear. Especially how the flight delays, the top topic concerned by most people, will be affected by space weather has never been thoroughly researched. By analyzing huge amou…

Bioconversion of bioresources/wastes (e.g., lignin, chemical pulping byproducts) represents a promising approach for developing a bioeconomy to help address growing energy and materials demands. Rhodococcus, a promising microbial strain, utilizes numerous carbon sources to produce lipids, which are precursors for synthesizing biodiesel and aviation fuels. However, compared to chemical conversion, bioconversion involves living cells, which is a more complex system that needs further understanding and upgrading. Various wastes amenable to bioconversion are reviewed herein to highlight the potent…

IntroductionAlthough often harmless, unexpected turbulence can occasionally cause injuries and even mortality for passengers on commercial airline flights. Studies of the mechanisms of injury associated with turbulence-related accidents can help airlines and regulatory agencies develop strategies to improve safety during encounters with turbulence.MethodsWe examined accident reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a federal agency tasked with investigating aviation accidents. Reports for accidents with at least one serious injury between January 1, 2008, and December 31, …

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION, FACILITIES, AND METHODS: Decompression sickness (DCS) occurring in hypobaric environments related to aviation or spaceflight was a major focus of research at Brooks AFB/City-Base, TX, throughout the period 1960-2010. Multiple hypobaric chambers and extensive support facilities were built for research on altitude DCS using both human subjects and animal models. Areas of study included symptomatology, incidence, prediction, and prevention of DCS. High-altitude aviation, spacecraft atmospheres, and pressure suits were evaluated with various decompression and prebreathing…

Talar fracture in children is extremely rare. In 1919, Anderson described talar fractures and used the term of aviator astragalus in his series. We report a case of talar neck fracture in a 9-year-old boy which does not match with any type of Hawkins' classification. We describe the radiological features of the fracture and outline its therapy and prognosis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, such a case with this unusual presentation has not been previously reported in the literature.

Pre-diabetes is the situation of having chronically high blood sugars but not meeting diagnostic criteria for diabetes. Many steps can be taken to delay or prevent the onset of diabetes in people with this condition. In general, the aviation medical examiner can issue a certificate to these airmen, but HbA1c readings greater than 6.0 should prompt further workup. The use of medications for pre-diabetes (such as metformin or acarbose) will require the submission of clinical information to the Aerospace Medical Certification Division.

In order to advance our scientific endeavors in the field of vestibular-spatial orientation research, it is important to know how much research has already been carried out, and how much accurate information we currently possess. It is mandatory to have sufficient background information in order to establish a solid working hypothesis utilizing insightful approaches. Accordingly, this historical survey covers various research endeavors from the beginning of aviation until the end of 2001, including Skylab, Microgravity Vestibular Investigations, and Neurolab.

Injuries in civil aviation can occur as a consequence of work-related accidents happening in airport. The ground crew can sustain slips, trips, falls, and machinery accidents. Most such accidents are observed when aircraft is departing. This clinical report describes a case of an airport ground assistant severely injured by a helicopter after the strike with a main rotor blade that was slowing after that the craft was landed and the engine was stopped, and reports surgical emergency treatment of life-threatening facial lesions.

Based on the identified facts, inferences, and doubts about the collision between JAL516 and JA722A on January 2, 2024, this study attempted to explore why the miscommunication between air traffic control (ATC) and JA722A was not compensated by other actors (ATC and JAL516) from the perspective of the inadequacy of interactions between related actors (JA722A, JAL516, and ATC) and each element (Software, Hardware, Environment, and Liveware) of the SHEL model. We also demonstrated that safety management at Haneda Airport was apparently lacking in Safety-II and pre-mortem approaches. Based on suc

This analysis examined systemic causes of Uncrewed Air Vehicle (UAV) accidents identifying operator, environmental, supervisory, and organisational factors through the use of the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS). HFACS is a system-based analysis method for investigating the causal factors associated with accidents and incidents and has previously been used to reliably and systematically identify active and latent failures associated with both military and general aviation accidents. Whilst HFACS has previously been applied to UAV accidents, the last known application wa…

Operating an aircraft requires pilots to handle a significant amount of multi-modal information, which creates a high working memory load. Detecting auditory alarms in this high-load scenario is crucial for aviation safety. According to cognitive control load theory, an increase in working memory load may enhance distractor interference, resulting in improved detection sensitivity for task-irrelevant stimuli. Therefore, understanding the effect of working memory load on auditory alarm detection is of particular interest in aviation safety research. The studies were designed to investigate the …
