Bacteriology and sensitivity patterns of pyogenic meningitis at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.

A descriptive cross sectional study on bacteriology and sensitivity patterns of laboratory-proven pyogenic meningitis was carried out over a six month period. A total of 92 patients (52 adults, 40 children) were studied. In 75 (82%) of the cases, the cerebrospinal fluid cultures were bacteriologically positive. Common isolates included Streptococcus pneumoniae (45%), Neisseria meningitidis (14%) and Haemophilus influenzae (12%). Other isolates included Cryptococcus neoformans from four (4.3%) adults who were also HIV-l positive. Sensitivity to antibiotics was determined using the disk diffusio…

Mortality and bacteriology of sepsis following cecal ligation and puncture in aged mice.

Epidemiologic data suggest that elderly adults are more susceptible to invasive bacterial infection by indigenous gut flora than are younger adults. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize a murine model of clinically encountered peritonitis in the aged. We subjected three different age groups (young, 16 weeks; mature, 12 months; senescent, 24 months) of C57BL/6NNia mice to surgically induced peritonitis by the cecal ligation and puncture procedure. Senescent mice died in a significantly shorter time following surgery than mature mice (median time to death, 24.4 versus 38.5 h, re

Vaccination against experimental staphylococcosis in sheep -- observations on bacteriology and pathology following challenge.

Sheep were vaccinated with a killed Staphylococcus aureus vaccine (2 doses) which had been cultured in vitro (Group 1), a killed S. aureus vaccine (2 doses) cultured in vivo (Group 2) or a single dose of a live vaccine (Group 3). Other sheep were used as non-vaccinated controls. All sheep were challenged by intravenous injection of 2.6 x 10(11) washed, viable S. aureus organisms, the vaccinated animals being given the challenge inoculum at various intervals after vaccination. The control sheep survived for 29h (mean) after challenge. Animals given killed vaccines survived longer, (particularly

From the ports to the hinterland. Plague, bacteriology, and politics in Argentina (1899-1940).

In 1899, the first cases of plague were recognised in Paraguay and a few months later in Buenos Aires as part of the third plague pandemic. In the first decades of the twentieth century, plague slowly advanced towards the Argentinian hinterland. In this paper we focus on the production of scientific knowledge about plague in Argentina, where a core of bacteriologists emerged early on. We show how they not only played a central role in the complex process of plague recognition and intervention, but also influenced the scientific development of bacteriology in Argentina and potentially in South …

Bacteriology of Sputum Samples: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infection is a common infection and accounts for a greater burden of disease worldwide. It is a great challenge to the clinician and still more, with increasing antimicrobial resistance. Its empirical treatment may vary according to the type of causative organisms. The objective of this study is to identify the pathogenic microorganisms and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern from sputum sample. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital from February 2015 to January 2016. Ethical app

Clinical Features, Bacteriology, and Antibiotic Treatment Among Patients with Presumed Naja Bites in Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical and bacteriological features of cobra (Naja) bites are still relatively unknown in Vietnam. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and bacteriological characteristics of local wounds in patients with presumed Naja spp bite, as well as their antibiotic treatment. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on presumed Naja bite patients who were admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. In vitro bacterial isolation, blood tests, and lesion measure were conducted, and antibiotic susceptibilities of localized bite wounds were assessed. The Mann-Whitney tes

The Bacteriology and Its Virulence Factors in Neonatal Infections: Threats to Child Survival Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal infection refers to the infection of the newborn during the first twenty-eight days of life. It is one of the causes of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The aim of the study is to determine the relative contribution of the different pathogens to the overall disease burden. It will also determine the mechanisms of virulence of these pathogens that cause neonatal infections at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka. METHODS: Biological samples were collected from 30 neonates admitted at the special care baby unit (SCBU) of COOUTH an

Effects of an Airway Clearance Device on Inflammation, Bacteriology, and Mucus Transport in Bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is characterized by abnormal and permanent dilation of the bronchi, caused by the perpetuation of inflammation and impairment of mucociliary clearance. Physiotherapy techniques can help to decrease the retention of respiratory secretions. The flutter valve combines high-frequency oscillation and positive expiratory pressure to facilitate the removal of secretions. We evaluated the effects of the flutter valve on sputum inflammation, microbiology, and transport of respiratory secretions in patients with bronchiectasis. METHODS: Seventeen participants underwent sessio

Conventional bacteriology in prostatitis patients: microbiological bias, problems and epidemiology on 1686 microbial isolates.

Prostatitis is one of the most common illnesses in men aged < or = 50 with different clinical presentation such as pelvic pain, Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms or sexual disfunction. Problems in the diagnosis and classification of this condition, however, have delayed epidemiologic research and consequently, our understanding of the natural history of prostatitis is limited. Nowadays, the Meares & Stamey test (M&S Test) in bacterial prostatitis is considered the most important test for diagnosis of bacterial prostatitis, even if several problems have been identified in running the M&S Test. The a

Bacteriology of acute rhinosinusitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma survivors: a result of maxillary sinus punctures.

Rhinosinusitis is a common complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who receive radiotherapy. An impaired mucociliary clearance due to this treatment may be the major cause of rhinosinusitis in these irradiated patients. The relative frequency with which various pathogens cause rhinosinusitis in these patients is unknown. This study investigates the bacteriology of acute rhinosinusitis in irradiated NPC patients by maxillary sinus puncture. From October 2001 through July 2006, 20 irradiated NPC patients with radiograph-proven acute maxillary sinusitis received maxillary sin…

Bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility in biliary tract disease: an audit of 10-year's experience.

Cholelithiasis, choledocholithiasis and hepatolithiasis are common biliary tract diseases. These diseases may cause severe infection and/or sepsis. In addition to surgical treatments, prompt administration of appropriate antibiotic is important to control the biliary tract infection. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the bacteriology in biliary tract disease and provide information for antibiotic choices. From Jan 1991 to Aug 2000, 1394 patients including gallbladder (GB) stones, common bile duct (CBD) stones, intrahepatic duct (IHD) stones, GB polyps and biliary malignancy were subje…

Bacteriology of the tonsil core in recurrent tonsillitis and tonsillar hyperplasia--a short review.

In recurrent tonsillitis, the tonsil core harbours numerous bacteria, some of which are pathogenic and may occur in great numbers. The most frequent bacteria are Haemophilus influenzae, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. A high tissue concentration of these bacteria correlates with clinical parameters of infection and hyperplasia of the tonsils. The role of Streptococcus pyogenes, while undisputed in acute and epidemic tonsillitis, should perhaps be re-evaluated in recurrent and/or hyperplastic tonsillitis.

The aerobic bacteriology of infected skin lesions in children of the Eastern Highlands Province.

Of 480 children studied, the relative frequency of skin infections divided into three categories were: score 266 (55%), infected scabies 164 (34%) and tropical ulcers 50 (10%). Infected scabies was more prevalent in the less than 2 year age group and tropical ulcers were commonest in the 9-12 year age group and these differences were significant. The majority of lesions occurred on the lower extremities with the trunk the least commonly affected area. No significant differences were found in different age groups between males and females. Beta haemolytic streptococci (95%), Staphylococcus aure
