OBJECTIVES: In this report, we compare weight loss, comorbidity resolution, nutritional abnormalities, and quality of life between younger and older adolescents after metabolic and bariatric surgery.
METHODS: From March 2007 to December 2011, 242 adolescents (≤19 years of age) who underwent bariatric surgery at 5 clinical centers in the United States were enrolled in the prospective, multicenter, long-term outcome study Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery. Outcome data from younger (13-15 years; n = 66) and older (16-19 years; n = 162) study participants were compared. Outcomes

OBJECTIVE: Bariatric surgery is associated with reduced atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and heart failure hospitalization in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and those with prior CVD. Most patients undergoing bariatric surgery do not have T2D or CVD. Many otherwise eligible patients do not have surgery because of self-exclusion. Clinical outcomes in these groups are less established.
METHODS: This study retrospectively assessed cardiorenal outcomes in 8,568 patients after acceptance of referral for surgery.
RESULTS: A total of 63.8% patients did not undergo surgery. After multi

Obesity is a highly prevalent public health concern, attributed to multifactorial causes and limited in treatment options. Several comorbidities are closely associated with obesity such as the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Bariatric surgery, which can be delivered in multiple forms, has been remarked as an effective treatment to decrease the prevalence of obesity and its associated comorbidities. The different types of bariatric surgery create a variety of new pathways for food to metab

INTRODUCTION: Lipoedema is characterized as subcutaneous lipohypertrophy in association with soft-tissue pain affecting female patients. Recently, the disease has undergone a paradigm shift departing from historic reiterations of defining lipoedema in terms of classic edema paired with the notion of weight loss-resistant leg volume towards an evidence-based, patient-centered approach. Although lipoedema is strongly associated with obesity, the effect of bariatric surgery on thigh volume and weight loss has not been explored.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, thigh volume

BACKGROUND: The decriminalization of marijuana and legalization of derived products requires investigation of their effect on healthcare-related outcomes. Unfortunately, little data are available on the impact of marijuana use on surgical outcomes. We aimed to determine the effect of marijuana use on 30-day complications and 1-year weight loss following laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
METHODS: At a large academic center, 1176 consecutive patients undergoing primary bariatric surgery from 2012 to 2017 were identified and separated into c

The purpose of this review was to analyze the literature about pregnancy after bariatric surgery. We searched for available articles on the subject from the last decade (2010 to 2020). The positive impact of bariatric surgery on the level of comorbidities and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes cannot be overrated. Weight loss after bariatric surgery reduces the incidence of obesity-related conditions in pregnancy. A pregnancy in a woman after bariatric surgery should be considered a high-risk pregnancy and taken care of by a multidisciplinary team with appropriate micronutrient and vitamin supple

Fat necrosis occurs more frequently in patients who have obesity and diabetes mellitus and is linked to worsening of diabetes. Little evidence is available about surgical complications that are related to inflammation and necrosis of adipose tissue. We report two cases of young women with diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery and had complications resulting from extensive inflammation and necrosis of adipose tissue. The first patient was diagnosed with omental infarction, which is a type of fat necrosis that is rarely associated with obesity and bariatric surgery. The second patient had an

Background: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is frequently performed for weight loss purposes in the morbidly obese population. The popularity and acceptance of this procedure have increased the knowledge of the physiological (anatomical and functional) changes that this technique produces in the organism. RYGB improves gastric emptying and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 6 patients in whom an RYGB was performed for non-bariatric purposes. Symptom questionnaire was used to evaluate response. Results: None of the patients qualified for bariatric surgery, as a

Bariatric surgical procedures, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and vertical sleeve gastrectomy, are currently the most effective clinical approaches to achieve a significant and sustainable weight loss. Bariatric surgery also concomitantly improves type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, cardiovascular diseases, and hyperlipidemia. However, despite the recent exciting progress in the understanding how bariatric surgery works, the underlying molecular mechanisms of bariatric surgery remain largely unknown. Interestingly, bile acids are emerging as p

BACKGROUND: Obesity and rapid weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS) are independent risk factors for development of cholelithiasis (CL), a prevalent disease in the Chilean population. This study aimed to determine the incidence of CL in obese Chilean patients 12 months after BS and identify risk factors for development of gallstones.
METHODS: Retrospective study of patients who underwent BS in 2014. Patients with preoperative negative abdominal ultrasound (US) for CL and follow-up for at least than 12 months were included. Patients underwent US at 6 months and 12 months. We analyzed sex, a

BACKGROUND: Severe protein malnutrition, with a serum albumin < 25 g/L, is one of the complications that may develop after bariatric surgery. It is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and requires timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent rapid clinical deterioration. However, evidence-based recommendations for a specific treatment approach are currently not available. The present study describes the efficacy of a newly developed treatment regimen for post-bariatric patients presenting with severe hypoalbuminemia.
METHODS: A single-centre, retrospective analysis of e

Obesity is a prevalent health problem in our population. Bariatric surgery is the indicated treatment for severe cases. It is very effective (together with an adequate lifestyle modification) but it is also associated with frequent adverse events. One of the most frequent and disturbing adverse event is diarrhea. Diarrhea after bariatric surgery may be secondary to multiple causes and the physiopathogenic mechanisms may depend on the type of surgery performed. The most frequent diarrhea mechanisms are dumping syndrome, vagotomy, short bowel syndrome, carbohydrate malabsorption, protein malabso

OBJECTIVES: The frequency of postprandial hypoglycaemia after different operative procedures of bariatric surgery (BS) is unknown, although this complication is potentially dangerous. Predictors and severity of hypoglycaemia after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric banding were investigated in a large prospective study.
METHODS: This study was performed at an excellence centre for BS at a tertiary care institution. Data of 333 patients (mean BMI: 44.9 ± 9.6 kg/m2; mean age: 40 ± 10 years; 80.7% women) were analysed in a prospective study with a 2-year observation

The overstitch endoscopic suturing system has opened a novel arena in endoscopy. To properly apply endoscopic suturing techniques, it is important to understand suture patterns and the different traction methods available. Applications beyond tissue compression in bariatric endoscopy include: closure, traction and fixation. Closure could be applied to perforations, suture dehiscences, fistulas and stoma reduction. Traction could be applied either as a pulley method to improver resection or as an improved method to decrease a defect size and help pull it into an over the scope clip. Fixation ha

Phlegmonous gastritis is a rare and progressive fatal condition that affects the mucosa and submucosa of the gastric wall. It can be localized or diffuse, affecting the entire stomach. It usually presents with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and hematemesis, along with systemic symptoms, including fever, chills, and fatigue. Risk factors include mucosal injury, surgery, hypoacidity, and immunosuppression that can be seen in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive or alcoholic patients. We present a case of phlegmonous gastritis which developed after a laparoscopi
