Parent Emotion Socialization Behaviors and Adolescent Psychological Symptoms in Families Impacted by Tourette Syndrome.

Parent emotion socialization (ES) behaviors, encompassing supportive and unsupportive responses to adolescent emotions, are an important factor in shaping youths’ psychological development, but their impact in adolescents with Tourette syndrome (TS) has been largely overlooked. While tics are the defining symptom of TS, psychological comorbidities are widespread in this population and more strongly predict quality of life than tic severity. As such, there is an urgent clinical need to identify risk factors for psychopathology in adolescents with TS. Parent ES behaviors in families affected by

Symptoms of Oppositional Behavior In autistic Adolescents and Adolescents Who Have Lost the Autism diagnosis.

This study compared self- and parent-reported symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in autistic adolescents (n = 34), adolescents who have a history of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but no longer display symptoms (“loss of autism diagnosis,” LAD; n = 29), and neurotypical (NT; n = 35) adolescents. Participants and their parents completed questionnaires measuring ODD symptomology as part of a larger research study. All participants had age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities, with no group differences. The LAD group had significantly fewer self-reported ODD symptoms compared

Examining Associations Between the Timing of Maternal Depressive Symptoms, Parenting Behaviors, and Child Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal depression is associated with poor psychosocial functioning and impaired parent-child relationship quality and confers risk for offspring psychopathology and altered brain structure. This study investigated the relative associations between the timing of perinatal depressive symptoms (prenatal, postnatal, and concurrent) and toddler psychopathology symptoms, toddler brain structure, and parenting behaviors. The study then explored whether parenting behaviors mediated relations between perinatal depressive symptoms and child psychopathology outcomes. METHOD: Using longitud

Racial Differences in Psychiatric Symptoms, Maladaptive Eating, and Lifestyle Behaviors After Bariatric Surgery.

There are several psychological and behavioral factors associated with poorer outcomes following bariatric surgery, yet it is unknown whether and how these factors may differ by race. In this cross-sectional study, individuals who underwent bariatric surgery from 2018 to 2021 and up to 4 years post-surgery were invited to complete an online survey. Psychiatric symptoms, maladaptive eating patterns, self-monitoring behaviors, and exercise frequency were examined. Participants (N = 733) were 87% women, 63% White, with a mean age of 44 years. Analyses of covariance demonstrated that White individ

Effects of borderline personality disorder symptoms on dialectical behavior therapy outcomes for eating disorders.

Existing literature on the effects of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorder (ED) comorbidity in terms of clinical presentation and treatment outcome has been limited and inconclusive. The present study examined whether clients with EDs and varying levels of BPD symptoms presented with more severe ED symptoms at admission, and whether they responded to dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)-based treatment. Participants (N = 176) were adults in a DBT-based partial hospitalization program for EDs at an academic medical center. Participants completed self-report measures at admiss

The Impact of Family Functioning on Help-Seeking Behavior and Symptom Severity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Poor family functioning is associated with higher symptom severity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and delayed help-seeking behavior in other forms of psychopathology. However, little is known about the impact of family functioning on help-seeking behavior and symptom severity in adults with OCD. The present study investigated the association between family functioning and both treatment delay and symptom severity in adults with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants were 194 adults who self-identified as having OCD and completed an internet survey, including measures ass

A systematic review on the effectiveness of dialectical behavior therapy for improving mood symptoms in bipolar disorders.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based psychotherapies available to treat patients with bipolar disorders (BD) are limited. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may target several common symptoms of BD. We conducted a systematic review on the efficacy of DBT for mood symptoms in patients with BD. The systematic search used key words related to DBT and BD in Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases from 1980 to April 1st, 2022. We included studies that enrolled patients with a BD I or II diagnosis (DSM or ICD), age 12 and older who received a DBT-based intervention. Studies reviewed

Repetitive Thoughts and Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Symptom-Based Framework for Novel Therapeutics.

While the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder include repetitive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, repetitive phenomena also occur in many other psychiatric disorders. Types of repetitive thoughts include preoccupations, ruminations, obsessions, overvalued ideas, and delusions. Types of repetitive behaviors include tics, stereotypies, compulsions, extrapyramidal symptoms, and automatisms. We provide a description of how to recognize and classify different types of repetitive thoughts and behaviors in autism spectrum disorder, providing clarity on which phenomena should be considered a c

Adaptive behavior and psychiatric symptoms in university students with ASD: One-year longitudinal study.

In recent years, more young adults with ASD are attending post-secondary education, and several support programs have been proposed for this population. However, research regarding the long-term effects of university enrollment on outcomes among students with ASD is scarce. This study examined adaptive behavior and psychiatric symptoms during the first semester of two consecutive academic years (T1, T2) among 39 students with ASD, 29 students without ASD and high levels of social anxiety symptoms (High SA), and 32 students without ASD and low levels of SA symptoms (Low SA). Students with ASD p

Excessive daytime sleepiness mediates the relationship between insomnia symptoms and suicidal behavior in adolescents.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia symptoms, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and suicidal behavior are prevalent among adolescents. Growing studies have shown that both insomnia symptoms and EDS are associated with suicidal behavior. However, little is known about the pathways between insomnia symptoms, EDS, and suicidal behavior. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal mediating effect of EDS on insomnia-suicidal behavior link in a large sample of Chinese adolescents. METHODS: Participants were 7072 adolescents (Mean age = 14.58 years, 50.0% males) who were surveyed at baseline and were fol

Association between hypomania and self-harm behaviors in Chinese children and adolescents with depressive symptoms.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a higher risk of self-harm (SH) when compared with depression. Therefore, it is reasonable to suspect that the state of mania or hypomania may independently contribute to increased SH risk. However, for hypomania, its association with SH remains less known. We intend to investigate this hypothesis in a large sample of Chinese children and adolescents with depressive symptoms. Based on a two-stage simple random cluster sampling method with probability proportionate to sample size (PPS) design, a total of 4,858 children and adolescents aged between 10 and

Influence of Clinical Markers of Dopaminergic Behaviors on Depressive Symptoms During Withdrawal in Cocaine Users.

Background: During cocaine withdrawal, transient depressive symptoms that do not meet the criteria for depression, but promote relapse, are frequently observed. Their temporality could evoke a role of dopamine, especially since the underlying mechanism of these depressive symptoms is not well understood. We hypothesized that variation in the dopaminergic activity profile, modeled from clinical markers, could be implicated in the development of depressive symptoms during cocaine withdrawal. Methods: We compared patients reporting depressive symptoms (RDS+) or not (RDS-) during cocaine withdrawa
