A study on uranium removal from simulated groundwater by Leifsonia sp. in the presence of clay minerals.

This study investigated the removal of U(VI) from multi-ion simulated groundwater using a uranium-tolerant indigenous strain Leifsonia sp. coupled with natural kaolinite and montmorillonite binary clay composites. Batch static experiments were performed to systematically quantify the independent and interactive effects of key variables (pH, reaction duration, initial U(VI) concentration, bacterial dry biomass dosage) and common groundwater coexisting ions on U(VI) immobilization efficiency. The binary clay-bacteria composite achieved optimal U(VI) removal performance, with a maximum removal ef

Synergistic stabilization of carvacrol emulsions using alginate, caseinate, and montmorillonite: enhancing encapsulation efficiency and controlled release.

Encapsulating carvacrol offers a promising approach to improving its stability, delaying oxidation, and enhancing its biological activity. This study explores the combined effects of alginate, caseinate, and montmorillonite on carvacrol emulsion stability to maximize encapsulation efficiency (EE). Box-Behnken experimental design was used to optimize the formulation, varying the concentrations of alginate (2-4 % w/w), caseinate (0-2 % w/w), and montmorillonite (0-2 % w/w). Emulsion stability was assessed based on droplet size, zeta potential, and yield stress, EE and microcapsule loading capaci

Impacts of coexisting mineral on crystallinity and stability of Fe(II) oxidation products: Implications for neutralization treatment of acid mine drainage.

The neutralization treatment of acid mine drainage involves the oxidation of Fe(II), but little is known about the effects of co-existing minerals on the oxidation and hydrolysis of Fe(II) to iron oxides. Here we investigated the transformation of fresh and heated Fe(II) oxidation coprecipitates, which were synthesized in the presence and the absence of five co-existing minerals (montmorillonite, kaolin, quartz (SiO2), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3)). In the FeSO4 system with montmorillonite or kaolin, the formation of lepidocrocite was inhibited with the increase of cla

Modification of a Na-montmorillonite with quaternary ammonium salts and its application for organics removal from TNT red water.

Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mont) and organic montmorillonite modified by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB-Mont) and tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB-Mont) were prepared as adsorbents to remove organic contaminants from 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) red water. The characterizations of the samples were performed with X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of CTAB-Mont (15.9 mg/g) was much larger than Na-Mont (0.26 mg/g) and TMAB-Mont (1.7 mg/g). Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models fitted the experimental results well. The ma

Non-selective oxidation of humic acid in heterogeneous aqueous systems: a comparative investigation on the effect of clay minerals.

Application of photocatalysis for degradation of natural organic matter (NOM) has received wide interest during the last decades. Besides NOM, model compounds more specifically humic acids (HAs) were also studied. As a continuation of the previous research, TiO2 photocatalytic degradation of HA was investigated in the presence of clay minerals, i.e., montmorillonite (Mt) and kaolinite (Kt). Degradation of HA was expressed by the pseudo-first-order kinetic modelling of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV-VIS parameters (Colour436 and UV254). A slight rate enhancement was attained for Colour43

Synthesis and photocatalytic performances of the TiO2 pillared montmorillonite.

TiO(2) pillared clay materials were prepared by montmorillonite (Mt) and acidic solutions of hydrolyzed Ti alkoxides in the presence of high-molecular-weight polyoxypropylene (POP)-backboned di-quaternary salts (POP). The as-prepared materials were characterized by means of XRD, FTIR, TG-DTA, XRF, specific surface area and porosity determinations, TEM and SEM, respectively. The experiments showed that the resulting material was a porous delaminated structure containing pillared fragments and nano-scaled TiO(2) particles well dispersed among each other. Introducing polymer surfactant POP as an

Montmorillonite-chitosan bionanocomposites as adsorbents of the herbicide clopyralid in aqueous solution and soil/water suspensions.

Montmorillonite (SWy-2)-chitosan bionanocomposites (SW-CH) were prepared following different methodologies, characterized, and assayed as adsorbents of the herbicide clopyralid (3,6-dichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid) in aqueous solution and soil/water suspensions, to assess the potential of the materials to prevent and remediate soil and water contamination by anionic pesticides. The SW-CH bionanocomposites were good adsorbents for the herbicide at pH levels where both the anionic form of the herbicide (pK(a)=2.3) and the cationic form of CH (pK(a)=6.3) predominated. The performance of the SW

Montmorillonite-fungal biomass hybrid as sustainable sorbent in rotating-disk sorptive extraction coupled to GC-MS for trace-level monitoring of estrogens in hospital wastewater.

In this study, we pioneered a bio-inorganic hybrid material by combining montmorillonite (MMT) with Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium. Moving beyond routine extraction phases, we focused on the preparation, physicochemical characterization, and application of this unique biohybrid for rotating-disk sorptive extraction (RDSE). The engineered material successfully blends the structured mesoporosity and high surface area of pristine clay with the dense, functionalized biopolymer network of fungal hyphae. By deconvoluting the sorptive mechanism, we found that estrogen retention is driven by a highly co

Response Surface Analysis of Manganese Removal Onto Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Modified Montmorillonite Clay.

The adsorption of Mn2+ on montmorillonite and optimization by response surface methodology have been studied. The alteration of K10 and MMT-Na by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) yields promising data on Mn2+ uptake. The SDS-induced embolism of K10 and MMT-Na montmorillonites opens lamellae and increases surface area, thereby increasing their adsorption capacity for Mn2+. The adsorption of Mn2+ increases slightly with increasing pH until pH = 8. From the Mn2+ species distribution, at pH < 8.5, Mn2+ is the only soluble form in solution, and no other species form before pH = 8. The best RSM model de

Organically modified sodium montmorillonite for enhanced adsorption of xylenol orange from aqueous solutions: kinetic, thermodynamic, and mechanistic study.

Xylenol orange (XO) is a persistent anionic azo dye that resists conventional treatment. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and binding poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) were sequentially intercalated onto Na-montmorillonite (NaMt) to prepare a CTAB/PVP-modified Na-montmorillonite (CP-NaMt), and its adsorption toward XO was evaluated. The nanostructured adsorbent was characterized by chemical analysis, morphological, phase analysis, and point-of-zero-charge measurements. The characterization indicated successful organic intercalation accompanied by slight basal-spacing expansion, partial layer

Unveiling modified montmorillonite enhancing the remediation ability of biochar for phthalate ester and Cd co-contaminated soil using an explainable machine learning approach.

The integration of sulfhydryl-modified montmorillonite (MMT-SH) with biochar (BC) shows significant promise for remediating phthalate esters (PAEs) and Cd co-contaminated soil. However, the synergistic remediation mechanism of composites in contaminated soil has not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, the EconML model together with the SHAP method was employed to evaluate the remediation ability and underlying mechanism of BC and MMT-SH composites. The results indicated that the composites enhanced the synergistic removal of ΣPAEs and exchangeable Cd, up to 45.89 % and 60.36 %, respect

Analytical and Antimicrobial Characterization of Zn-Modified Clays Embedding Thymol or Carvacrol.

Carvacrol and thymol are broad-spectrum natural antimicrobial agents. To reduce their volatility and improve their antimicrobial performance, synergistic systems were prepared loading the active molecules in zinc-modified clays. Montmorillonite (MMT) and zeolite (ZEO) were modified with zinc ions (ZnMMT and ZnZEO), with well-known antimicrobial properties, and then with carvacrol or thymol, reaching the 26 ± 3% and 33 ± 2% w/w of loading, respectively. The resulting hybrid materials were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TGA, and GC-MS to evaluate carvacrol/thymol release in simulating food ma

Impact of tetracycline-clay interactions on bacterial growth.

Antibiotics are extremely effective against bacterial infections due to their selective toxicity for bacteria rather than the host. Extensive use and misuse of antibiotics resulted in significant increases in antibiotic levels in aquatic and soil environments. Bacteria exposed to antibiotics with low concentrations may develop antibiotic resistance. In this study a swelling 2:1 clay mineral montmorillonite (MMT) and a non-swelling 1:1 clay mineral kaolinite were premixed with tetracycline (TC) of varying concentrations. The gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enter

Plutonium(IV) sorption to montmorillonite in the presence of organic matter.

The effect of altering the order of addition in a ternary system of plutonium(IV), organic matter (fulvic acid, humic acid and desferrioxamine B), and montmorillonite was investigated. A decrease in Pu(IV) sorption to montmorillonite in the presence of fulvic and humic acid relative to the binary Pu-montmorillonite system, is attributed to strong organic aqueous complex formation with aqueous Pu(IV). No dependence on the order of addition was observed. In contrast, in the system where Pu(IV) was equilibrated with desferrioxamine B (DFOB) prior to addition of montmorillonite, an increase in Pu(

Significance of mineral salts in prebiotic RNA synthesis catalyzed by montmorillonite.

The montmorillonite-catalyzed reactions of the 5'-phosphorimidazolide of adenosine used as a model generated RNA type oligomers. These reactions were found to be dependent on the presence of mineral salts. Whereas montmorillonite (pH 7) produced only dimers and traces of trimer in water, addition of sodium chloride (0.1-2.0 M) enhanced the chain length of oligomers to 10-mers as detected by HPLC. Maximum catalytic activity was observed with sodium chloride at a concentration between 0.8 and 1.2 M. This concentration of sodium chloride resembled its abundance in the ancient oceans (0.9-1.2 M).
