UNLABELLED: We have investigated bile acid malabsorption (BAM), and its response to treatment, in patients seen in this district general hospital with chronic continuous or recurrent diarrhoea.
METHODS: Seven-day retention of 75-SeHCAT was measured (normal: > 10%).
TREATMENT: Patients were initially given conventional therapy (prednisolone +/- ASA drugs in Crohn's disease, and antidiarrhoeals in the others). BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma of the biliary tract is a rare tumour which has been treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, bypass procedures and stenting. Surgery remains the only curative treatment for these tumours, but a large proportion are unresectable. Intraluminal brachytherapy has been reported as an effective treatment for localized cholangiocarcinoma of the biliary tract. We report a case of ductopenia associated with cholestatic hepatitis in a 59-year-old woman treated for 41 years for temporal epilepsy. The patient developed jaundice, without any clinical or biochemical features of hypersensitivity, 10 months after the beginning of treatment with sulpiride. Injuries to the extrahepatic bile duct present a severe complication in laparoscopic cholecystectomy occurring in 0-2.6%. From June 1991 to September 1994 four patients were treated to the Department of Surgery at Bonn University with bile duct injuries after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
