The role of home practice in thermal biofeedback.

The role of regular home practice of hand warming was examined in the thermal biofeedback (TBF) treatment of vascular (migraine and mixed migraine and tension) headache (HA) by giving 12 sessions (over 6 weeks) of TBF to two groups of vascular HA patients (n = 23 per group). One group was asked to practice regularly at home with a home trainer between clinic sessions, whereas no mention of practice was made to the other group. A third group merely monitored HAs. Treatment was superior to no treatment. There was no advantage for the group receiving home practice, either in headache reduction or

Biofeedback as an adjunct to psychotherapy in the treatment of vaginismus.

This exploratory study examines the use of biofeedback as an adjunct to psychotherapy in the treatment of vaginismus. A set of six Sims-type graded EMG probes was constructed to provide biofeedback from the vaginal sphincter and was tested on a pilot sample of nulliparous women prior to this study. Five sequential cases of vaginismus from a clinic waiting list participated in the program. All five couples completed the program and all reported successful intercourse at its conclusion. The number of sessions devoted to biofeedback probe insertion was almost halved in comparison to previous expe

Predictors of response to biofeedback-assisted relaxation for migraine: An exploratory analysis.

BackgroundFew studies have examined which patients with migraine might be responders for mind-body interventions. Thus, we examined whether certain baseline mindfulness traits and interest in physical exercise might predict response to treatment.MethodsThis is a planned exploratory analysis of a phase 2 randomized controlled study (N  =  50; 25 per arm) comparing a 6-week physical therapist (PT)-delivered biofeedback-assisted relaxation (BAR) program vs. an Enhanced Usual Care (EUC) migraine self-management program (diary tracking and emailed migraine-related educational materials). We conduct

Comprehensive Bladder Management Program Combined with a Biofeedback Stimulator in Neurogenic Bladder Rehabilitation.

Neurogenic Bladder (NB) refers to the dysfunction of the urinary tract caused by damage to the central nervous system or peripheral nerves that control urination. The combination of Comprehensive Bladder Management (CBM) and biofeedback stimulator is one of the rehabilitation treatments to improve the quality of life and increase the quality of urination for patients with neurogenic bladder. Both aim to enhance the patient's bladder capacity, reduce residual urine volume, and decrease the incidence of urinary incontinence. However, there is no consensus on the therapeutic effect of comprehensi

Surface Electromyographic Features for Severity Classification in Facial Palsy: Insights from a German Cohort and Implications for Future Biofeedback Use.

Facial palsy (FP) significantly impacts patients' quality of life. The accurate classification of FP severity is crucial for personalized treatment planning. Additionally, electromyographic (EMG)-based biofeedback shows promising results in improving recovery outcomes. This prospective study aims to identify EMG time series features that can both classify FP and facilitate biofeedback. Therefore, it investigated surface EMG in FP patients and healthy controls during three different facial movements. Repeated-measures ANOVAs (rmANOVA) were conducted to examine the effects of MOTION (move/rest),

Factors Associated with Patient Adherence to Biofeedback Therapy Referral for Migraine: An Observational Study.

Biofeedback has Grade A evidence for the treatment of migraine, yet few studies have examined the factors associated with patients' decisions to pursue biofeedback treatment recommendations. We sought to examine reasons for adherence or non-adherence to referral to biofeedback therapy as treatment for migraine. Patients with migraine who had been referred for biofeedback by a headache specialist/behavioral neurologist were interviewed in person or via Webex. Patients completed an enrollment questionnaire addressing demographics and questions related to their headache histories. At one month, p

Biofeedback efficacy for outlet dysfunction constipation: Clinical outcomes and predictors of response by a limited approach.

BACKGROUND: Functional defecation disorders (FDD) are a common etiology of refractory chronic constipation (CC). FDD diagnosis (dyssynergic defecation [DD] and inadequate defecatory propulsion [IDP]), requires diagnostic tests including anorectal manometry (ARM) and balloon expulsion test (BET). Biofeedback (BF) is the treatment of choice for DD. The aims of our study were to evaluate: the outcome of BF in a group of constipated patients with defecatory disorders of any etiology; the efficacy of two simple diagnostic tools in predicting BF outcome in the short-term. METHODS: One hundred and t

Efficacy of Sensor-Based Training Using Exergaming or Virtual Reality in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review.

In its chronic and non-specific form, low back pain is experienced by a large percentage of the population; its persistence impacts the quality of life and increases costs to the health care system. In recent years, the scientific literature highlights how treatment based on assessment and functional recovery is effective through IMU technology with biofeedback or exergaming as part of the tools available to assist the evaluation and treatment of these patients, who present not only with symptoms affecting the lumbar spine but often also incorrect postural attitudes. Aim: Evaluate the impact o

Current State of Non-surgical Devices for Female Stress Urinary Incontinence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize and assess the current non-surgical devices for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). RECENT FINDINGS: Devices for SUI can generally be divided into two categories. One category is the augmentation of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), wherein devices such as vaginal cones, intravaginal biofeedback, and electrical or magnetic stimulation are used to strength the pelvic floor musculature, though none are more effective than traditional PFMT. The second category of devices mechanically occludes the outlet and includes

Patient Experiences of Rehabilitation and the Potential for an mHealth System with Biofeedback After Breast Cancer Surgery: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapy-led home rehabilitation after breast cancer surgery can protect against the development of upper limb dysfunction and other disabling consequences of surgery. A variety of barriers can limit physical rehabilitation outcomes, and patients may benefit from more support during this time. Mobile health (mHealth) systems can assist patients during rehabilitation by providing exercise support, biofeedback, and information. Before designing mHealth systems for a specific population, developers must first engage with users to understand their experiences and needs. OBJECTIVE

Visual Biofeedback of Force Information for Eccentric Training of Hemiplegic Patients.

Motor learning issues for hemiplegics not only include motor impairments such as spastic paralysis, but reportedly also an inability to appropriately recognize somatic sensations. In this regard, biofeedback of movement information through visual information and auditory information has been found effective as a method for drawing attention to appropriate somatic sensations. In this context, here, we propose a novel eccentric training system utilizing visual biofeedback of force information. We first develop a compact and highly portable rehabilitation robot for home use. The robot estimates t
