Friend or foe: assessing the value of animal models for facilitating clinical breakthroughs in complement research.

Animal experiments have long been a cornerstone of advancements in biomedical research, particularly in developing novel therapeutic strategies for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. However, these historically important approaches are now facing growing scrutiny for ethical reasons, concerns about translational limitations to human biology, and the rising availability of animal-free research methods. This shift raises a critical question: How relevant and effective are animal models for driving future advancements in today's research landscape? This Review aims to explore this question wit…

1st Workshop of the Canadian Society for Virology.

The 1st Workshop of the Canadian Society for Virology (CSV2016) was a Special Workshop of the 35th Annual Meeting for the American Society for Virology, held on 18 June 2016 on the beautiful Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The workshop provided a forum for discussion of recent advances in the field, in an informal setting conducive to interaction with colleagues. CSV2016 featured two internationally-renowned Canadian keynote speakers who discussed translational virology research; American Society for Virology President Grant McFadden (then from University of Florida, now relocate

Guiding Principles: Reporting Elements for Gastrointestinal Organoid Research.

Gastrointestinal (GI) organoids are now widely used for disease modeling, drug discovery, regenerative-, and precision medicine. As publications using GI organoids have increased exponentially, methodological reporting across GI organoid studies remains inconsistent, making results difficult to interpret, compare, and reproduce. To address this, we present community-informed guidance for reporting key experimental details in GI organoid research. Our recommendations were developed by integrating established biomedical reporting frameworks, organoid-focused resources from international organiza

Taxonomy of chronic illness research recruitment: a restricted scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic illness prevalence is increasing and research recruitment in these populations remains challenging. Individuals with chronic illness often have poorer quality of life, restricted access to hospitals where research occurs, and can be reluctant to participate. Researchers need multiple simultaneous strategies to achieve success. No taxonomy of recruitment factors in chronic illness research could be identified in the literature. This paper aims to describe a comprehensive taxonomy of recruitment for chronic illness research (inclusive of a nursing focus) to inform the design

Ethical Considerations for Clinical Data Sharing in Craniofacial Research: Recommendations From a Multidisciplinary Working Group.

ObjectiveTo propose recommendations for ethical, participant-centered clinical data sharing in craniofacial research.DesignSeries of deliberative multidisciplinary expert working group meetings to develop recommendations.SettingTwo 1-h virtual meetings; one all-day hybrid meeting.Patients, ParticipantsWorking group (n = 16) comprised individuals with expertise in craniofacial research, bioethics, and patient/caregiver advocacy, as well as lived experience of craniofacial conditions.InterventionsThe working group first reviewed prior empirical data about research participant attitudes about dat

Involving Experts by Experience in Craniofacial Research.

Many areas of health research increasingly involve end users of research (typically patients and their families/caregivers) in study design, management, and dissemination. Beyond recruiting patients as research participants, the shift is towards engaging patients, parents and caregivers as active partners on the research team, who are recognised and valued as 'experts-by-experience' (EbyE). Currently, involving EbyE is not routine in global craniofacial research. This paper highlights the value of EbyE involvement, addresses how to incorporate EbyE at all stages of research and discusses key c

Setting up a pragmatic clinical trial in a low-resource setting: A qualitative assessment of GoLBeT, a trial of podoconiosis management in Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials are often perceived as being expensive, difficult and beyond the capacity of healthcare workers in low-resource settings. However, in order to improve healthcare coverage, the World Health Organization (WHO) World Health Report 2013 stated that all countries need to become generators as well as recipients of data. This study is a methodological examination of the steps and processes involved in setting up the Gojjam Lymphoedema Best Practice Trial (GoLBeT; ISRCTN67805210), a highly pragmatic clinical trial conducted in northern Ethiopia. Challenges to the trial and

Pertussis vaccine effectiveness and duration of protection - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

A comprehensive review of observational pertussis vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies is needed to update gaps from previous reviews. We conducted a systematic review of VE and duration of protection studies for the whole-cell (wP) and acellular (aP) pertussis vaccines and conducted a formal meta-analysis using random effects models. Evidence continues to suggest that receipt of any pertussis vaccine confers protection in the short-term against disease although this protection wanes rapidly for aP vaccine. We detected significant heterogeneity in pooled estimates due, in part, to factors such a
