Renewal of Cu-Fe dual active sites in Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photo-assisted Fenton water decontamination: Enhanced electron transport and minimized environmental biotoxicity.

Photo-assisted heterogeneous Fenton reaction continues to hold great promise as a highly effective method for rapid water decontamination, but its actual practice is still limited by the slow renewal of active sites on catalysts. Herein, we have ingeniously combined copper silicate nanotubes (CSN) and Fe2O3 to construct Fe2O3/CSN Z-scheme heterojunction with Cu-Fe dual active sites and oxygen vacancies (Vo) for efficient elimination of organic contaminants through photo-assisted Fenton reaction. Experimental results reveal that interfacial Vo produced from lattice mismatch between Fe2O3 and CS

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals, Hypothalamic Inflammation and Reproductive Outcomes: A Review of the Literature.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are environmental and industrial agents that interfere with hormonal functions. EDC exposure is linked to various endocrine diseases, especially in reproduction, although the mechanisms remain unclear and effects vary among individuals. Neuroinflammation, particularly hypothalamic inflammation, is an emerging research area with implications for endocrine-related diseases like obesity. The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in regulating reproduction, and its inflammation can adversely affect reproductive health. EDCs can cross the blood-brain barrier, poten

ToxiTaRGET: a multi-omics database for toxicant-responsive molecular targets.

Environmental toxicant exposures can induce widespread alterations in both the transcriptome and epigenome of mammals, and directly contribute to the increased risk of various diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and neurological disorders. To evaluate how early-life toxicants produce long-term impacts on the transcriptome and epigenome in mice, the Toxicant Exposures and Responses by Genomic and Epigenomic Regulators of Transcription II (TaRGET II) Consortium generated a landmark resource comprising 3607 multi-omics datasets from longitudinal studies in mice. The molecular ch

Engineering Cu2O@BN photocatalytic heterojunction for synchronous kinetic enhancement and reaction pathway regulation in peroxymonosulfate activation.

The robust redox cycle of the catalytic center is essential for enhancing sustainable water purification in Fenton-like catalysis. However, the unequal of electron donation and acceptance, especially slow reductive half-reactions, often limit the process. Herein, we developed a photocatalytic heterojunction by integrating cuprous oxide (Cu2O) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The h-BN component acts as an electron sink, promoting electron-hole pair separation and efficient Cu+ regeneration. This design enhances peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, achieving

Optimization of the catalytic activity of a ZnCo2O4 catalyst in peroxymonosulfate activation for bisphenol A removal using response surface methodology.

An effective peroxymonosulfate activator, ZnCo2O4, was synthesized through a microwave-assisted method. According to response surface methodology (RSM) using Box-Behnken design (BBD), the effects of four parameters, microwave temperature, microwave time, calcination time and calcination temperature, were investigated, and the results show that both the microwave temperature and calcination temperature have a great influence on the catalytic activity during the preparation process. In addition, a quadratic model is valid for computing and predicting the observed responses. The characteristics o

Environmental Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly termed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), represents the most prevalent chronic liver condition worldwide, affecting approximately 25%-30% of the global adult population. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)-including phthalates, bisphenols, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals-are ubiquitous environmental contaminants with established metabolic toxicity. However, the quantitative association between EDC exposure and MASLD prevale

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals and thyroid cancer.

Environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have emerged as a critical global health concern because of their role in various diseases, including thyroid cancer. Defined as exogenous substances that disrupt endocrine system functions, EDCs can affect multiple generations through mechanisms such as hormone receptor modulation, altered hormone synthesis, and epigenetic modifications. The increasing global incidence of thyroid cancer has heightened interest in environmental factors, with EDC exposure recognized as a significant contributor. Compounds such as heavy metals, persistent organ

Modification of Epoxides with Metallic Fillers-Mechanical Properties after Ageing in Aqueous Environments.

The aim of this research was a comparative analysis of selected mechanical properties of epoxy compounds that were modified with metallic fillers and aged in aqueous environments. The tested epoxy compounds consisted of three components: styrene modified epoxy resin based on Bisphenol A, triethylenetetramine curing agent (resin/curing agent ratio of 100:10) and two types of metallic fillers in the form of particles: aluminum alloy (EN AW-2024-AlCu4Mg1) and tin-phosphor bronze (CuSn10P). Samples were subjected to ageing in 4 water environments: low-, medium- and high-mineralized natural water a

PbO2 corrosion scales drive phenolic micropollutant transformation, lead release, and toxic halogenated byproduct formation.

Micropollutant-corrosion scale interactions in drinking water distribution networks (DWDNs) pose significant risks to water safety. Our study systematically investigated the transformation of phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) mediated by PbO2, a dominant component of lead pipe scales, in model aqueous solutions without added disinfectants. The transformations exhibited staged kinetic behavior and were therefore described using piecewise apparent pseudo-first-order fitting, with reaction rates strongly dependent on pH and electronic effects, and optimal conditions varying between compounds (e.g., lo

Carbon‑sulfur metabolic shift in sludge anaerobic digestion system induced by bisphenol S: Interfacial behavior and microbial network restructuring.

The traditional assessment of contaminants' effects on sludge anaerobic digestion system usually concentrates on single endpoint such as methane and ignores the broader metabolic trade-off. This study shows how bisphenol S (BPS), which is largely used instead of other similar chemicals that have been restricted, drives a systematic carbon-sulfur metabolic shift during sludge anaerobic digestion, as systematically investigated through both complementary batch assays and long-term operations. The results showed that BPS has a concentration-dependent, hormetic effect on methanogenesis, with a 7.4

Multi- and transcriptomic changes of chronic exposure to bisphenol A reveals reproductive toxicity in male zebrafish.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is considered to be a threat to marine organisms owning to its widespread usage and potential aquatic toxicity. However, the reproductive toxicity of BPA to transgenerational inheritance in aquatic organisms is still unclarified. In this study, the morphological, histological, and transgenerational changes by BPA in zebrafish testis were investigated. Results showed that BPA caused abnormities in sperm number, activity, and fertility rate. Testicular transcriptional alterations detected by RNA-seq identified 1940 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after BPA exposure, of wh

Degradation mechanism of Bisphenol S via hydrogen peroxide/persulfate activated by sulfidated nanoscale zero valent iron.

Fenton-like oxidation processes are widely used to degrade recalcitrant organic pollutants, but are limited by narrow application pH and low reaction efficiency. This study investigated the synchronous activation of H2O2 and persulfate (PDS) by sulfidated zero valent iron (S-nZVI) in ambient conditions for Fenton-like oxidation of bisphenol S (BPS), an estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical. The activation of S-nZVI induced H2O2 or PDS could be greatly enhanced with the assistance of PDS and H2O2, respectively, even across a wide range of pH value (3-11). The first-order rate constant of S-n

Effects of short-term exposure to low doses of bisphenol A on cellular senescence in the adult rat kidney.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the primary chemicals produced by volume worldwide. Extensive literature has raised many concerns about its possible involvement in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases, but its contribution has not been extensively studied. During cellular senescence, the interference of lipofuscin with cellular functions promotes further senescence, causing cellular malfunction. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) plays an important protective role in the setting of kidney injury. The goal of the present work was to evaluate the effects of short-term treatment with low doses of BP

Bisphenol S degradation via persulfate activation under UV-LED using mixed catalysts: Synergistic effect of Cu-TiO2 and Zn-TiO2 for catalysis.

A photocatalyst composed of Zn-TiO2 and Cu-TiO2 through simple physical mixing was used to activate persulfate(PS) for Bisphenol S (BPS) degradation. Zn-TiO2 and Cu-TiO2 were prepared with a sol gel method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The two catalysts have shown an obvious synergistic effect in the photocatalytic degradation process. When 5 mM persulfate and 0.3 g/L catalyst were used, the removal rate of mixed catalyst (0.2 g/L Zn-TiO

Cationic gemini surfactant-resorcinol-aldehyde resin and its application in the extraction of endocrine disrupting compounds from food contacting materials.

A new cationic gemini surfactant-resorcinol/formaldehyde resin was designed and synthesized. Cationic gemini surfactant was introduced into the resorcinol/formaldehyde resin for the first time and led to the retention of negatively charged endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) through electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The synthesized material showed good performance in the dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) of EDCs such as alkylphenol and phenoxy acid herbicides from food packaging migrants. Extraction parameters such as pH, adsorbent dose, extra

Negative impact of endocrine-disrupting compounds on human reproductive health.

There is increasing concern about chemical pollutants that are able to mimic hormones, the so-called endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), because of their structural similarity to endogenous hormones, their ability to interact with hormone transport proteins or because of their potential to disrupt hormone metabolic pathways. Thus, the effects of endogenous hormones can be mimicked or, in some cases, completely blocked. A substantial number of environmental pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, bisphenol A, pesticides, alkylphen

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Rodent reproductive behavior among males and females after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

IN BRIEF: The rodent reproductive behavioral control column of the hypothalamus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are critical systems that regulate copulatory behaviors in both males and females. We review how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically phthalates, bisphenol A, and chemical mixtures, dysregulate appetitive and consummatory copulatory behaviors and their neuroendocrine substrates, using mouse and rodent models. ABSTRACT: Sexual reproduction - from both physiological and behavioral perspectives - is dependent upon appropriate connections between a diver
