Five normal CB hamsters (females, 2.5 months old) received a 0.1-ml blood transfusion from a donor that had been infected with 10(7) amastigotes of Leishmania donovani 90 days prior to the blood harvest. This retrospective study assesses the effect of early blood transfusion on the subsequent progress of patients admitted with severe epistaxis. Both further bleeding and surgical procedures were more frequent in those receiving blood within the initial 24 h. Assessment and accurate replacement of blood loss during primary craniosynostosis repair is difficult due to patient size and surgical technique. Eighty-five charts of all patients undergoing primary craniosynostosis repair over a 15-year period were reviewed to determine blood loss and to assess blood transfusion practices both intraoperatively and postoperatively. Selective deficiency of serum IgA is the most common immunodeficiency in humans; when immunodeficient individuals receive blood transfusions a severe anaphylactoid reaction can develop.
