Bone mass and body composition after cessation of therapy for childhood cancer.

Our aim was to review current information on body composition and bone mass after cessation of therapy for childhood cancer and to present preliminary data on body composition and bone mass in a group of Danish survivors of childhood leukaemia or lymphoma. Elevated body-mass index (weight/height2; BMI) is frequent after treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. BMI increases during therapy or within the first year after therapy and remains abnormal thereafter. Treatment with corticosteroids, abnormal growth-hormone secretion after treatment with cranial irradiation (CI) or cortico

Contemporary reflections on William Gull's case studies of anorexia nervosa, 150 years on.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse and compare the original four published anorexia nervosa (AN) case histories of William Gull with modern-day approaches. METHOD: Case histories of the patients described by Gull were reviewed and placed in a tabulated format (which included demographics, clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis) along with his general comments on AN, for easier comparison. RESULTS: Many of the presenting features of AN are similar to cases seen in more modern times but lack weight or body image disturbances. The cases described by Gull can be categorised as AN under the Diagnosti

Central nervous system inflammation in disease related conditions: mechanistic prospects.

Inflammation is part of the innate immune response following insults to the body. This inflammatory reaction can spread throughout the systemic circulation and also into the central nervous system (CNS). CNS involvement has been demonstrated following acute peripheral insults including sepsis, surgery, burns and organ injury. It has also been observed in chronic conditions including obesity, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation within the CNS is part of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Thes

Baseline and Follow-Up Association between Adiposity and Renal Function: Data from the ILERVAS Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is multifactorial and increasingly prevalent disease associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). While cross-sectional studies support a link between adiposity and renal dysfunction, the long-term impact of total body fat on kidney function remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the association between baseline adiposity, assessed by body mass index (BMI) and total body fat percentage, and renal function parameters, and to determine whether adiposity predicts CKD outcomes over 4 years in individuals without diabetes at low-to-moderate cardiovascular risk. METHODS

Broad skill generalization with an extra robotic body part.

Our ability to transfer motor skills across tools and contexts is central to how we adapt to an increasingly technological world. From smartphones to wearable robotics, modern technologies demand flexible motor control that generalizes beyond specific learning contexts. Robotic limbs for body augmentation are designed to increase the body's degrees of freedom while coordinating with our biological limbs.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 While these devices perform well in controlled settings, their real-world effectiveness remains uncertain.9,10 This raises a fundamental question: can the brain form flexible mo

Concurrent low skeletal muscle mass and fat area may predict poor survival in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma treated with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab therapy.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Combination immunotherapy is the standard first-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Body composition may affect treatment outcomes; however, the prognostic relevance of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue during immunotherapy remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether integrating skeletal muscle and adipose tissue measurements stratifies survival outcomes in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving atezolizumab plus bevacizumab therapy. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, conducted at nine institutions, body composition was assessed using the bo

Body Composition, Falls, and Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease: Gender-Specific Effects.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability and gait difficulties (PIGD) are a significant cause of mobility loss and lower quality of life in Parkinson's disease (PD). When PD progresses, patients may experience falls and freezing of gait (FoG) resulting in fear of falling and increasing sedentariness. Sedentary behavior results in sarcopenia associated with other changes in body composition, especially in older patients becoming frail. Previous studies have shown gender-specific changes in body composition with aging as well as gender disparities in symptoms and progression of PD, yet the association b

A 9-month-old with wheezing and acute hypoxic respiratory failure.

Foreign body aspiration remains a diagnostic challenge, especially in an infant. While acute onset wheezing is highly suggestive of an aspiration, wheezing carries a broad differential diagnosis resulting in frequent misdiagnoses. Many cases present with a range of nonspecific findings and normal imaging, stressing the importance of a high index of suspicion.

Borrelia recurrentis in head lice, Ethiopia.

Since the 1800s, the only known vector of Borrelia recurrentis has been the body louse. In 2011, we found B. recurrentis DNA in 23% of head lice from patients with louse-borne relapsing fever in Ethiopia. Whether head lice can transmit these bacteria from one person to another remains to be determined.

Childhood Obesity Raises GDM Risk Through Adult Obesity: Evidence From Lifecourse Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between childhood and adulthood obesity and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains unclear. To clarify the independent and joint effects of childhood and adulthood body size on GDM risk, and explore inflammation's role. METHODS: Using female-specific UK Biobank genome-wide association study data, genetic instruments for childhood/adult body size ("thinner," "about average," "plumper") and C-reactive protein (CRP) were identified. GDM variants came from FinnGen. Univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) assessed causality and media

Comparison of anthropometric and body composition indices in the identification of metabolic risk factors.

Whether anthropometric or body composition indices are better indicators of metabolic risk remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to compare the association of metabolic risk factors with anthropometric and body composition indices and to identify the better indicators for risk factors in a large-scale Korean population. In this cross-sectional study, the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) as anthropometric indices and trunk fat mass (TFM), percent trunk fat mass (%TFM), whole-body total fat mass (WBTFM), and percent wh

Unsupervised Clustering of Intradialytic Blood Pressure Patterns and Their Associations With Body Composition in Patients Undergoing Chronic Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Intradialytic blood pressure (BP) abnormalities are common in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD), however, their relationship with body composition remains unclear. We investigated the association between intradialytic BP patterns and body composition using an unsupervised clustering approach. METHODS: Adult outpatients receiving chronic HD who underwent segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis were included. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) trajectories during HD were mapped to prespecified 30-minute time points from 0 to 240 minutes, and changes relative

Investigation into factors affecting the mechanical behaviours of a patient-specific vertebral body replacement.

Most vertebral body implants that are currently designed and produced in batches have difficulty meeting the patient-specific demands. Moreover, several complications, including a low fusion rate, subsidence occurrence, and rod displacement, are associated with these implants. This study aims to investigate the effects of patient-specific geometric and clinical parameters on the biomechanics of a vertebral body replacement. A three-dimensional patient-specific vertebral body replacement model was established as the basic model for parametric studies, including the anatomic design of the endpla

Perfectionism as a risk factor for psychopathology in a community sample of young women: disorder-specific pathways to disordered eating or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Perfectionism has been suggested as a risk factor relevant to multiple psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (ED). However, it remains unclear how perfectionism contributes to general and specific psychopathology. Disorder-specific processes (e.g. body dissatisfaction, responsibility) between perfectionism and subsequent symptoms may offer an explanation. The current study examined longitudinal associations between perfectionism, body dissatisfaction or responsibility, and symptoms of ED or OCD. A community sample of 499 women (18-30) compl

Categorization learning induced changes in action representations in the macaque STS.

Neuroimaging and single cell recordings have demonstrated the presence of STS body category-selective regions (body patches) containing neurons responding to presentation of static bodies and body parts. To date, it remains unclear if these body patches and additional STS regions respond during observation of different categories of dynamic actions and to what extent categorization learning influences representations of observed actions in the STS. In the present study, we trained monkeys to discriminate videos depicting three different actions categories (grasping, touching and reaching) with

Body image in and out of the lab: Correspondence between lab-based attentional bias data and body shape dissatisfaction experiences in daily life.

Accumulating lab-based studies have identified attentional biases in processing of negative appearance-related information among individuals with elevated trait body shape and weight dissatisfaction (BD). How these biases translate into experiences of BD in daily life remains unclear and, hence, was the focus of the present study. Thirty-eight women aged between 18-40 years completed a baseline survey and modified dot-probe task with both fat and thin appearance-related stimuli in a laboratory setting. Participants also downloaded a smartphone app that prompted them 10 times per day for 7 days
