Skeletal lesions in the broiler, with special reference to dyschondroplasia (osteochondrosis). Pathology, frequency and clinical significance in two strains of birds on high and low energy feed.

The material consisted of 2,950 broilers of the variety Hybro Compact of two lines. An equal number of birds of both lines were given either a high energy feed (H) or a low energy feed (L), containing all nutrients known to be required by broilers. During the first 3 weeks, H and L starter feeds were given and thereafter H and L finishing feeds. At 21, 35, and 45 days of age, the birds were weighed in groups, and feed conversion calculated. At 21 days of age, the frequency of crooked toes and swollen hocks was registered. Birds were taken from each group for necropsy at regular intervals. Both

Neuroimaging findings of extensive sphenoethmoidal dysplasia in NF1.

Whereas isolated sphenoid wing dysplasia (SWD) is a well-known clinical feature in neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), extensive cranial defects involving multiple bones have been rarely reported in this disorder. In this report, we describe the clinical course of a 20-year-old male with NF1 and an extensive cranial bone dysplasia. The large sphenoethmoidal defect was associated with transethmoidal and orbital cephalocele as well as inferolateral herniation of the frontal lobe. In spite of the large defect, the individual did not have any symptoms or complications resulting from the osteopathy. We revi

Bone dysplasia series. Melorheostosis: review and update.

Melorheostosis is a rare nongenetic developmental anomaly first described in 1922 by Léri and Joanny. Its etiology is unknown. Patients present at any age, and both sexes are affected equally. Onset is usually insidious, with deformity of the extremity, pain, limb stiffness and limitation of motion in the joints first manifesting in late childhood or early adolescence and progressing into adult life. The characteristic radiographic appearance consists of irregular hyperostotic changes of the cortex, generally on one side of the bone, resembling melted wax dripping down one side of a candle. Th

Arthro-osteo-renal dysplasia. Report of a case.

A rare case of bone dysplasia with moderate modelling anomalies of the long bones, joint dislocation, osteolysis, a congenital calvarial defect, a patent ductus arteriosus, a mild degree of hypospadias and hypertensive renal cystic dysplasia is presented. In spite of many similarities with the Hajdu - Cheney Syndrome (HCS), important dissimilarities indicate that this case may be either an extreme variant of HCS, or a closely related, separate entity for which the term Arthro-Osteo-Renal Dysplasia is proposed.

Wolcott-Rallison syndrome: diabetes mellitus and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia.

In 1972, Wolcott and Rallison described three siblings with a combination of infancy-onset diabetes mellitus and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. We have observed a brother and sister with the same disorder. The chondro-osseous lesions are those of a spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia. The diabetes mellitus is relatively mild. Histologic and electron microscopic studies of chondro-osseous tissue show findings similar to those in other epiphyseal and spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasias. In addition, however, atypical collagen-like fibres are found inside and outside chondrocytes. Collagen production seems

[Differential diagnosis of metaphyseal dysplasias and osteodysplasty (osteodysplasty of Melnick and Needles) (author's transl)].

The article reports on 4 patients with rare modeling defects of the long bones. These defects are metaphyseal dysplasia, craniometaphyseal dysplasia, frontometaphyseal dysplasia, and osteodysplasty (osteodysplasty of Melnick and Needles). The differential diagnostic criteria are shown in a table to allow diagnosis already in children. This appears important in respect of the therapy to be employed (corrective surgery) and for prognosis, as well as for giving patients proper genetic and vocational advice.

Diffuse Calvarial Hyperstosis.

Calvarial hyperstosis can be an idiopathic benign finding or secondary to a metabolic pathology. We herein describe a case of diffuse calvarial hyperstosis. A 26-year-old man known to have end-stage renal disease on regular hemodialysis, tertiary hyperparathyroidism, extensive brown tumors, and severe developmental impairment with skeletal deformities was referred to us for macrocephaly. On examination, the patient was chairbound, with speech and motor developmental delay, and frontal bossing. Brain computed tomography revealed diffuse hyperstosis of the calvarium and facial bones expansion wi

Investigation of developmental toxicity of favipiravir on fetal bone and embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: Favipiravir is one of the essential antiviral drugs used for the treatment of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in some countries. However, there is not enough information about used, especially in pregnancy. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to determine the developmental toxicity of favipiravir on fetal bone development and embryonic development. METHODS: In this study, 16 pregnant wistar albino rats were used. The rats were divided into four groups: Control (saline) and Group A (50 mg/kg × 5 days), Group B (50 mg/kg × 1 days + 20 mg/kg × 4 days), Group C (20 mg/kg × 5 days).

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system in the diagnosis of rheumatic diseases in the pediatric population.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the musculoskeletal system is an examination increasingly performed for suspected juvenile idiopathic arthritis, chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis and juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, as well as other rheumatic diseases of developmental age. T1-, T2- and PD-weighted with or without fat suppression or short tau inversion recovery/turbo inversion recovery magnitude (STIR/TIRM) sequences and post-contrast sequences are evaluated to diagnose pathological changes in the synovial membrane, subchondral bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues. Magnetic

Primary Cilia and Intraflagellar Transport Proteins in Bone and Cartilage.

Primary cilia, present on most mammalian cells, function as a sensor to sense the environment change and transduce signaling. Loss of primary cilia causes a group of human pleiotropic syndromes called Ciliopathies. Some of the ciliopathies display skeletal dysplasias, implying the important role of primary cilia in skeletal development and homeostasis. Emerging evidence has shown that loss or malfunction of primary cilia or ciliary proteins in bone and cartilage is associated with developmental and function defects. Intraflagellar transport (IFT) proteins are essential for cilia formation and/

Imaging of Mixed and Radiopaque Jaw Lesions.

Radiopaque lesions and lesions of mixed density are less frequent than radiolucent lesions of the jawbones. They comprise a spectrum of odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. The latter group includes inherited and developmental disorders, osteomyelitis, and benign and malignant primary bone tumors and metastases. Most odontogenic radiopaque or mixed lesions are either related to the apex or more rarely to the crown of the tooth, although there are exceptions to this rule. Some lesions, such as a torus mandibularis and torus palatinus, have a characteristic location, whereas others show no r

Treatment of Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica with Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation: A Case Report.

CASE: We present a case of dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (DEH) involving the posteromedial distal femur in a 4-year-old girl. The patient underwent lesion resection with internal fixation of the articular cartilage followed by autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) to restore the articular surface and epiphysis. At the 7-year follow-up, the patient had no pain or difficulty with participation in sports. Advanced imaging showed a stable articular surface with evidence of durable cartilage integration. CONCLUSION: DEH is a rare disease often treated by resection. In cases where the artic

Vertebral deformities in interspecific diploid and triploid salmonid hybrids.

Vertebral deformities in salmonid interspecific hybrids, some of which were triploidised, were assessed across three separate year classes during the freshwater life stage. Initially, eggs from a farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were crossed with the sperm from a S. salar, arctic char Salvelinus alpinus or brown trout Salmo trutta. For S. salar × S. trutta, half the eggs were triploidised. In a second- and third-year class, the eggs from a farmed S. salar were crossed with the sperm from either a S. salar or a S. trutta, and half of each group was triploidised. In the two initial-year classe

More Than Epiphyseal Osteochondromas: Updated Understanding of Imaging Findings in Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica (Trevor Disease).

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to discuss approaches to imaging dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica in the context of recent advances in the understanding of the underlying pathophysiologic profile of this entity, which may result in pain, growth disturbance, and early development of osteoarthritis. CONCLUSION: Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica was first characterized as a skeletal disorder with osteochondromas characteristically involving epiphyses on one side of the same lower extremity. Upper extremity involvement was subsequently recognized. Previously conceptualized as epiphysea

Open Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy with Distal Tubercle Osteotomy Lessens Change in Patellar Position.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in patellar position after open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) with distal tubercle osteotomy (DTO), comparing outcomes of conventional OWHTO in young adults with proximal tibia varus deformity but no arthritic manifestations. Thirty-three patients (mean age, 31.8 years) subjected to OWHTO/DTO were matched with 30 patients (mean age, 33.5 years) undergoing conventional OWHTO. Patellar position, as measured in pre- and postoperative standing lateral radiographs, was compared. Patellar height was assessed via Insall-Salvati ratio, modi

Complete Closing Wedge Osteotomy for Correction of Blount Disease (Tibia Vara): A Technique.

Treatment of Blount disease (tibia vara) can be daunting in adolescents because of their obesity. The goals in performing osteotomy for Blount disease are to correct the deformity, restore joint alignment, preserve leg length, and prevent recurrent deformity and other complications, such as neurovascular injury, nonunion, and infection. In this article, we report on our treatment of 9 limbs in 8 patients (age range, 13-17 years) with Blount disease. In each case, we performed an oblique complete closing wedge osteotomy of the tibia fixed with a compression plate with oblique screw and a fibula
