Refracture after plate removal of midshaft clavicle fracture after bone union during the hospital stay: A case report.

The refracture of the midshaft clavicle after the removal of internal fixation following fracture union is a rare complication, with an incidence rate of 1 %-5 %. The specific causes of refracture are not yet clear, and it is widely believed to be related to factors such as gender, BMI, and fracture type. This study reports a case of refracture of the midshaft clavicle occurred during hospitalization.

Evaluation of distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyseal plate in bone age estimation with 3.0T MRI: a comparison of current methods.

OBJECTIVE: Dedouit et al, Kramer et al and Vieth et al defined different staging methods over different sequences in knee MRI for bone age determination. Our study aims to examine three different methods in which the maturation stages of the knee epiphyses are evaluated by MRI in the same population, to compare the methods and results and evaluate them for some age thresholds and to discuss their applicability in forensic age estimation. METHODS: In this study, 597 knee images obtained using a 3.0T MR scanner were evaluated retrospectively. The T 1 weighted and proton density-weighted sequenc

Finite element method-based simulation on bone fracture fixation configuration factors for biodegradable embossed locking compression plate.

As an evolution, biodegradable implants need to maximize mechanical performance thereby may lead to confusion in selection of the biodegradable material and implant design to the fracture site. This requires selecting a unique fixation configuration to fit within the fractured bone, factors of which can be bone-plate clearance, interfragmentary gap, alteration in screw fixation position and variation in the number of screws whose configuration optimization can re-maximize the mechanical performance of the biodegradable implant. Therefore, these factors have been optimized based on the induced

Refracture after plate removal of midshaft clavicle fractures after bone union-incidence, risk factors, management and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: There is a great debate on the routine use of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for midshaft clavicle fractures, and one concern is the adverse events after ORIF, such as implant removal after bone union. In this retrospective study, we assessed the incidence, risk factors, management and outcomes of refracture after plate removal of midshaft clavicle fractures after bone union. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred fifty-two patients diagnosed with acute midshaft clavicle fractures who had complete medical records from primary fractures to refracture were recruited. De

Case Report: Prophylactic Plate Fixation for Incomplete Atypical Ulnar Fractures Resulting From the Use of Denosumab for Bone Metastases.

Patients with bone metastases are treated with long-term bone resorption inhibitors such as bisphosphonates and denosumab. However, resorption inhibitors have been known to cause fractures, such as atypical femoral fractures (AFFs). In recent years, there have been an increasing number of reports of atypical ulna fractures (AUFs) caused by bone resorption inhibitor usage. Treatment of AUFs is complicated, especially when they occur in patients with bone metastases, because it is difficult to discontinue bone resorption inhibitor treatment without the risk of aggravating metastatic lesions. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis for complex comminuted bone fractures in the Fraser's type II floating knee: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Floating knee type IIC, according to Fraser's classification, is an uncommon severe injury that typically occurs in polytrauma. In such cases, intra-articular fracture and the high degree of comminution and deformity of the mid-distal femur make fixation challenging. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technology can simplify these complex problems and improve patient prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man injured his left leg in a car accident, causing pain, swelling, deformity, and limited mobility on his left

Bone wax in the treatment of partial epiphysiodesis of distal femoral growth plate: Case report at 10-year follow-up.

The growth plate is the weakest structure in the skeleton of a child and a frequent site of injury or fracture; physeal injuries represent 15%-30% of all fractures in children. Of all growth plate fractures, the incidence of growth arrest and disorders is around 15%. Here, we discuss a female patient who, at the age of 5 years, was treated for a polytrauma that involved a complex lesion of the growth plates of the knee. Four days after trauma, she underwent closed reduction surgery and internal fixation with cannulated screws for femoral and tibial fractures of the growth plate. A 20° valgus d

Plate-assisted bone segment transport: Novel application on distal tibia defect after tumour resection. A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Reconstruction of a large bone defect of the distal tibia after limb salvage surgery is difficult. The options include custom-made ankle endoprosthetic replacement, arthrodesis, and biological or metallic intercalary reconstructions. This report introduces a technique that provides the patient with a long-lasting biological reconstruction while preserving the native ankle. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 47-year-old man with osteosarcoma of the distal tibia. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, wide excision was performed while preserving the ankle joint. Increased stability by a novel femoral neck interlocking plate compared to conventional fixation methods. A biomechanical study in synthetic bone.

BACKGROUND: Stable fixation promotes union in the common femoral neck fractures, but high non-union rates due to fixation failure remain with traditional fixations. To enhance stability, a plate interlocking pins, but without further fixation to femur has been developed. To our knowledge, no comparison to other conventional fixation methods has been performed. We tested the hypothesis that the novel implant biomechanically leads to a more stable femoral neck fixation. METHODS: Fifty synthetic femurs with a cervical wedge osteotomy were allocated to intervention with three hook-pins interlocke

Pediatric physeal slide-traction plate fixation for pathological distal femoral fracture caused by unicameral bone cyst in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Most patients suffering from distal femoral unicameral bone cysts (UBCs) are adolescents that require an early return to normal activities, including school attendance and sports exercises. However, the optimal choice of implants for such patients remains controversial. This study evaluated the application of pediatric physeal slide-traction plate (PPSP) in the treatment of pathological distal femoral fracture caused by UBCs. METHODS: Between Jan 2014 and Jan 2016, 11 (male = 6, female = 5) patients were reviewed retrospectively. Age, sex, operative time, limb-length discrepancy (

Extensor Tendons Rupture after Volar Plating of Distal Radius Fracture Related to a Dorsal Radial Metaphyseal Bone Spur.

Extensor tendon ruptures due to volar plating in distal radius fractures have mostly been described in relation with technique failures such as screw prominence and drill penetration. We report the case of a 71-year-old female with a C2 distal radius fracture with severe dorsal metaphyseal comminution. The patient underwent surgical treatment with reduction of the large fragments and fixation with a volar locking plate; the small dorsal metaphyseal nonarticular fragments were not reduced. Six months later, the patient developed extensor digitorum communis (EDC) rupture and extensor indicis pro
