Moderate agreement between the spot albumin‒Creatinine ratio (ACR) and urine albumin (UA) among virally suppressed adults living with HIV in botswana: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Albuminuria predicts end-organ dysfunction in the general population. Its detection in people living with HIV (PLWH) is understudied, despite their heightened risk for end-organ dysfunction. We assessed agreement between albumin‒creatinine ratio (ACR) and urine albumin (UA) tests for albuminuria in a cohort of PLWH in Botswana, where females are more affected by HIV than males. METHODS: We used cross-sectional convenience sampling to enrol 1533 virally suppressed adults aged ≥ 21 years who were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Gaborone, Botswana. We measured urine creatin…

HIV/sexually transmitted infection prevalence and sexual behavior of men who have sex with men in 3 districts of Botswana: results from the 2012 biobehavioral survey.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) suffer significant stigma and discrimination; hence, they are reluctant to access health services. The Botswana Second National Strategic Framework for 2010-2016 stipulates the need to increase HIV prevention services for key populations as one of its prevention implementation strategies. We report here the prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and risk factors for HIV infection among MSM in Botswana. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey using respondent driven sampling in 3 districts of Botswana: Gaborone, Francistow…

Protocol for an adaptive platform trial of intended service user-derived interventions to equitably reduce non-attendance in eye screening programmes in Botswana, India, Kenya and Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Only 30%-50% of people referred to clinics during community-based eye screening are able to access care in Botswana, India, Kenya and Nepal. The access rate is even lower for certain population groups. This platform trial aims to test multiple, iterative, low-risk public health interventions and simple service modifications with a series of individual randomised controlled trials (RCT) conducted in each country, with the aim of increasing the proportion of people attending. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will set up a platform trial in each country to govern the running of a series of…

Outcomes of HIV-positive patients with non-tuberculous mycobacteria positive culture who received anti-tuberculous treatment in Botswana: Implications of using diagnostic algorithms without non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) pulmonary disease may have similar clinical presentation. The potential for misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment exists in settings with limited testing capacity for Xpert® MTB/RIF (Xpert), phenotypic culture and NTM speciation. We describe treatment outcomes among people living with HIV (PLHIV) who received anti-tuberculosis treatment and were found to have NTM or MTB positive sputum cultures. METHODS: PLHIV attending one of the 22 participating HIV clinics, who screened positive for ≥1 tuber

Low adherence to recommended infant feeding strategies among HIV-infected women: results from the pilot phase of a randomized trial to prevent mother-to-child transmission in Botswana.

Little is known about the ability of women to adhere to recommended feeding strategies to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (MTCT) from breast milk. We conducted a pilot study in rural Botswana to prevent MTCT from breast milk. Women were randomized to formula feed their infants or to exclusively breastfeed while providing prophylactic zidovudine. Women who chose to formula feed independently were also followed. Among those with > or = 3 postpartum visits, none of 31 women assigned to breastfeed did so exclusively for 5 months. Seven (22%) of 32 women in the formula arm definitely or pr…

An ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants traditionally used by the BaKalanga people of the Tutume subdistrict in Central Botswana to manage HIV/AIDS, HIV-associated conditions, and other health conditions.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: While access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) continues to improve worldwide, HIV infection and AIDS persist as serious health challenges, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM), as part of indigenous and pluralistic medical systems, are important contributors to primary health care worldwide. However, this knowledge remains relatively undocumented in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa such as the Tutume subdistrict of Central Botswana, where CAM is widely used including potentially for HIV/AIDS and HIV-associated conditio…
