[Cyst in the second branchial cleft: review of 3 cases].

Three cases of cysts arising from the second branchial cleft are described. They were completely removed. Histopathological examination revealed that cysts were lined with columnar (respiratory type) epithelium. The authors take this opportunity to review the underlying pathogenic mechanism, the clinical manifestations and therapeutic procedures.

The BOR syndrome and renal agenesis--prenatal diagnosis and further clinical delineation.

This is the first report of prenatal diagnosis of a fetus with brachio-oto-renal dysplasia (BOR) syndrome with right-sided renal agenesis and severe left hypoplasia. The father of this fetus had malformed external ears, a left-sided preauricular pit and branchial cyst, and bilateral mild to moderate deafness without a demonstrable renal anomaly. This family highlights the variable expressivity seen in the autosomal dominant BOR syndrome, the importance of genetic counselling for families with BOR syndrome, and the aetiologic heterogeneity of renal agenesis.

New autosomal dominant branchio-oculo-facial syndrome.

We observed an autosomal dominant disorder of abnormal upper lip, which resembles a poorly repaired cleft lip, malformed nose with broad bridge and flattened tip, lacrimal duct obstruction, malformed ears, and branchial cleft sinuses and/or linear skin lesions behind the ears in several persons in 3 families. In each of the 3 families, an affected parent had at least one affected child. Father-to-son transmission in one of these families ruled out X-linked inheritance. Other anomalies include coloboma, microphthalmia, auricular pits, lip pits, highly arched plate, dental anomalies, and subcuta

Vascular pathogenesis of unilateral craniofacial defects.

The term hemifacial microsomia refers to unilateral defects in development of structures derived from the first and second branchial arches. Recently we evaluated three unrelated children who had a similar pattern of unilateral craniofacial defects that was associated with other structural abnormalities having a disruptive vascular pathogenesis. The clinical findings in these patients suggest that one cause of hemifacial microsomia is in utero interruption of blood flow.

Symposium: Congenital anomalies of the middle ear. III. Congenital anomalies of the middle ear.

Congenital anomalies of the middle ear have been considered rare. The tremendous volume of middle ear surgery performed during the last 15 years has brought attention to numerous anomalies of the facial nerve, ossicles, and middle ear cleft, suggesting that middle ear anomalies are not as rare as once believed. This paper discusses anomalies of the descending and horizontal facial nerve which have been previously reported. The literature of anomalies of the ossicles is reviewed. A very rare anomaly of the carotid artery presenting in the middle ear is described and its surgical treatment outli

Role of the Bicoid-related homeodomain factor Pitx1 in specifying hindlimb morphogenesis and pituitary development.

Pitx1 is a Bicoid-related homeodomain factor that exhibits preferential expression in the hindlimb, as well as expression in the developing anterior pituitary gland and first branchial arch. Here, we report that Pitx1 gene-deleted mice exhibit striking abnormalities in morphogenesis and growth of the hindlimb, resulting in a limb that exhibits structural changes in tibia and fibula as well as patterning alterations in patella and proximal tarsus, to more closely resemble the corresponding forelimb structures. Deletion of the Pitx1 locus results in decreased distal expression of the hindlimb-sp

Pharmacological inactivation of the endothelin type A receptor in the early chick embryo: a model of mispatterning of the branchial arch derivatives.

In the present study, we have applied an antagonist treatment to the chick embryo in ovo in order to demonstrate and dissect the essential roles of the endothelin type A (ETA) receptor in the embryonic development. We have cloned, sequenced and expressed the cDNA of the chick ETA receptor and shown that its affinity for endothelin antagonists is very similar to that shown by its mammalian counterparts. We have studied the spatio-temporal expression pattern of this receptor by in situ hybridization and shown that there is a high level of its mRNA within the mesenchyme of the branchial arches at

Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Spreading into Branchial Cleft Cyst.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid malignancy and it can cause cystic metastasis to the neck region. Branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) are among the most commonly encountered congenital cystic neck masses. PTC metastasis into BCC has been rarely reported in the literature. In this case report we report a patient presenting with a cystic neck mass for which fine needle aspiration biopsy was reported as benign cytology and eventually was diagnosed as PTC metastasis to the BCC. The importance of investigating the thyroglobulin levels in fine needle aspiration material

Diagnosis and Management of Cervical Vestigial Pathologies in Children: A Retrospective Study of 25 Cases in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of Morocco.

Background Cervical vestigial pathologies are common congenital anomalies in children, arising from embryological remnants of the branchial apparatus and the thyroglossal duct. They constitute an important etiology of cervical masses in pediatric otolaryngology practice. Objective This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic specificities of cervical vestigial pathologies in children in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco and to compare our findings with data from the literature. Methods We conducted a retrospective descriptive study over a one-year period (

A reappraisal of the respiratory vasculature of the electric eel, Electrophorus sp.

The electric eel (Electrophorus sp.) is an air-breathing teleost and has been known as the only fish taxon with direct vascular connections (shunts) between the ventral and dorsal aortas in all four gill arches. The aerial respiratory capillaries of the electric eel have been assumed to be perfused with the pre-branchial blood from these shunt vessels. We re-examined the cardiovascular anatomy and found these prevailing notions to be partly inaccurate. The gills of Electrophorus varii are of the holobranch structure with the afferent (ABA) and efferent (EBA) branchial arteries as discrete anat

Scanning electron microscopy study of Strabax monstrosus von Nordmann, 1864 (Copepoda: Chondracanthidae) from Tunisian waters and histopathological study of its effects on host.

Strabax monstrosus von Nordmann, 1864 (Copepoda: Chondracanthidae) is an ectoparasite and it was recently recorded from small red scorpionfish, Scorpaena notata Rafinesque, and red scorpionfish, Scorpaena scrofa L., collected from Tunisian coastal waters. Copepod females were found deeply embedded in the branchial cavity reaching the cardiac region with their mouth-parts. Observations of females and males using scanning electron microscopy showed a number of morphological features that have been previously overlooked or incompletely presented. In this study, we report for the first time the fi

Cre-mediated gene inactivation demonstrates that FGF8 is required for cell survival and patterning of the first branchial arch.

In mammals, the first branchial arch (BA1) develops into a number of craniofacial skeletal elements including the jaws and teeth. Outgrowth and patterning of BA1 during early embryogenesis is thought to be controlled by signals from its covering ectoderm. Here we used Cre/loxP technology to inactivate the mouse Fgf8 gene in this ectoderm and have obtained genetic evidence that FGF8 has a dual function in BA1: it promotes mesenchymal cell survival and induces a developmental program required for BA1 morphogenesis. Newborn mutants lack most BA1-derived structures except those that develop from t

[Serious cerebral malformations (corpus callosum aplasia, prosencephalic cyst), internal carotid canal and facial malformations due to neural crest abnormalities, associated with choleosteatoma].

The authors report an original case of malformative spectrum, which includes cerebral (corpus callosum aplasia, prosencephalic cyst) facial, otic and basi-cranial dysplasias associated with cholesteatoma. Cephalic neural crest cells migrate to different regions in the head and neck, where they contribute to the development of mainly the first and second branchial arches and of many structures as the anterior skull base, the face, the ear and the forebrain. Data suggest that the link between these rare malformations is abnormal neural crest development, perhaps due to defective Hh signal.

Multidetector computerized tomographic fistulography in the evaluation of congenital branchial cleft fistulae and sinuses.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to primarily investigate the usefulness of computerized tomographic (CT) fistulography in the diagnosis and management of branchial cleft fistulae and sinuses. STUDY DESIGN: Fifteen patients with confirmed branchial fistulae or sinuses who had undergone CT fistulography were included. The diagnoses were confirmed by clinical, radiologic, or histopathologic examinations. The internal openings, distribution, and neighboring relationship of the lesions presented by CT fistulography were analyzed to evaluate the usefulness in comparison with x-ray fistulograph

Oto-facio-cervical (OFC) syndrome is a contiguous gene deletion syndrome involving EYA1: molecular analysis confirms allelism with BOR syndrome and further narrows the Duane syndrome critical region to 1 cM.

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder involving hearing loss, branchial defects, ear pits and renal abnormalities. Oto-facio-cervical (OFC) syndrome is clinically similar to BOR syndrome, with clinical features in addition to those of BOR syndrome. Mutations in the EYA1 gene (localised to 8q13.3) account for nearly 70% of BOR syndrome cases exhibiting at least three of the major features. Small intragenic deletions of the 3' region of the gene have also been reported in patients with BOR syndrome. We have developed a fluorescent quantitative multiplex polymerase c

FOXI3 establishes the ectodermal niche in pharyngeal arches for cranial neural crest cells and their lineages.

Craniofacial development relies on the migration of cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) to the first and second pharyngeal arches, followed by their differentiation into various cell types during embryogenesis. Although the CNCC migration has been well-studied, the role of the niche in relation to CNCC remains unclear. Variants in FOXI3 have been implicated in craniofacial microsomia (CFM), yet the molecular mechanisms remain unexplored. FOXI3 is expressed in the ectoderm and auricle epidermis, but not in CNCCs or cartilage. Deletion of Foxi3 in the mouse CNCCs did not disrupt mandible and auri

The Special Developmental Biology of Craniofacial Tissues Enables the Understanding of Oral and Maxillofacial Physiology and Diseases.

Maxillofacial hard tissues have several differences compared to bones of other localizations of the human body. These could be due to the different embryological development of the jaw bones compared to the extracranial skeleton. In particular, the immigration of neuroectodermally differentiated cells of the cranial neural crest (CNC) plays an important role. These cells differ from the mesenchymal structures of the extracranial skeleton. In the ontogenesis of the jaw bones, the development via the intermediate stage of the pharyngeal arches is another special developmental feature. The aim of
