Main features and treatments of cervical cysts in children from a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: The cervical cysts is one of the most common children ailments an ENT surgeon encountered, which often begins with painless masses in the neck. The present study summarizes main clinical features of various types of children cervical cysts and discusses the possible approaches and associated complications, with an aim to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this pediatric disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients admitted with cervical cyst to Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2018 to December 2023. The utility of ultrasonographic surveillance in management of a presumed branchial cleft cyst later confirmed HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer.

While branchial cleft cysts are often considered benign pathologies, the literature discusses cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising from these cystic lesions as either a primary or metastatic tumor. We illustrate our institutional experience and review the current literature to identify recommendations for best diagnostic, surveillance, and treatment guidelines for SCC identified in a branchial cleft cyst. A 61-year-old male presented with a right sided neck mass, with suspicion of a branchial cleft cyst due to benign findings on fine needle aspiration. Following surgical excision, a

Synchronous Presentation of Right Parotid Branchial Cleft Cyst and Left Neck HPV-Associated Cystic Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Diagnostic Quandary.

Branchial cleft cyst arising within the parotid space is considered an extremely rare phenomenon. In contrast, cystic squamous cell carcinoma in the lateral neck is not an uncommon presentation of HPV-related head and neck cancer. Although they have singly been narrated in literature, simultaneous expression of these anomalies has yet to be reported. We describe a case of synchronous presentation of branchial cleft cyst of the right parotid gland and cystic metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the left neck. These findings are discussed in light of the challenges in fine needle aspiration bio

Primary branchiogenic carcinoma: malignant degeneration of a branchial cyst, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary branchiogenic carcinoma (PBC) is an extremely rare and poorly documented disease developed from a brachial cleft cyst. CASE: A 51-year-old patient was referred to our unit for an upper neck mass. PBC was confirmed in accordance with Kahfif's diagnostic criteria. Prophylactic selective neck dissection was performed in a second-stage surgery to ensure the complete removal of the neoplasm. Branchiogenic origin with lymphoid tissue was confirmed in the "host cyst" after histological examination and no other tumors were found elsewhere. Regular follow up documented no relapse 1

A branchial cyst of the pyriform fossa transoral laser resection: a case report.

Pyriform sinus malformations represent rare third and fourth branchial anomalies. Fistulae at the latter site were initially described and make up less than 1 % of all brachial anomalies. They may be discovered incidentally, or may present as a neck mass with recurrent infection, dysphagia, or airway compromise, and can be an unusual cause of dysphonia in infant and children. Here, we present a case of third branchial cyst located in pharyngeal wall of the left pyriform sinus which presented with dysphonia since birth in a 6-year-old girl. Transoral CO2 laser excision was carried out successfu

[CT imaging and fourth branchial pouch fistula in adults].

We report two cases of fourth branchial pouch in adult. This rare and little-known pathology is indeed responsible for suppurative thyroiditis and left lower cervical abscess recurring in spite of antibiotic treatment and incision-drainage. CT scan using, iv contrast, air as a agent contrast with Valsalva test, shows air in the thyroid and perithyroid soft tissue infection, proving communication between the pyriform fossa and the thyroid. Bubble of air behind the left thyroid alar in the sinus track is the best argument for diagnosis. Hypopharyngoscopy shows the mucous opening of the bottom at

The earpits-deafness syndrome. Clinical and genetic aspects.

Several pedigrees with 19 new cases of the earpits-deafness syndrome (McK +12510) [28] are presented. Mention is made of clinical findings obtained in audiometric and vestibular studies, studies of renal function and configuration and polytomographic studies of the labyrinth, and results of exploratory tympanotomies are discussed. The literature is reviewed and the features found in 138 cases and in our 19 cases are presented. The earpits-deafness syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder in which affected individuals may have sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing loss, preauricular pits

Cystic masses of the lateral neck - Proposition of an algorithm for increased treatment efficiency.

Preoperative discrimination of solitary cervical branchial cleft cysts from cystic lymph node metastasis often is challenging. Surgical excision of the cystic formation and consecutive histopathological examination of tissue specimens are the only means resulting in the correct diagnosis. However, in case of malignancies surgery on the lateral neck prior to the definitive treatment is considered to negatively influence the patients' outcome. The rate of cystic lymph node metastasis in patients presenting with a lateral branchial cleft cyst, localization of the primary tumour and oncological ou

The value of sonography in the management of cystic neck lesions.

Eight cases of cystic neck lesion of differing causes in whom sonography was carried out as part of investigation are described. These are thyroid cyst with haemorrhage, thyroglossal cyst, branchial cyst, cystic hygroma, parotid abscess of the neck secondary to malignant external otitis, cystic degeneration of a recurrent malignancy in the neck, sebaceous cyst and a cold abscess. They showed that sonography is better than clinical judgement in obtaining a diagnosis. Therefore, we recommend that ultrasound should be performed in all neck lesions prior to needle aspiration or open excisional bio

Glomerular lesions in the branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome.

Three cases: two adults and one child, with histologically confirmed branchio-oto-renal syndrome showed prominent glomerular lesions. Typically there was segmental and focal hyalinization associated with dense deposits along the basement membrane and in the mesangium. Variable deposits of immunoglobulins IgG, IgM, and IgA as well as C3 were present. The branchio-oto-renal syndrome appears to be a familial nephropathy which may lead to renal failure.

Branchial cleft cyst: An unusual site for the cervical metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Cancers found in the resected branchial cleft cyst are rare clinically but usually impose substantive diagnostic and treatment challenges for clinicians. METHODS: A 31-year-old man presented with a lateral neck mass that was suspected to be an inflammatory branchial cleft cyst. After excision, the pathologic specimen revealed a benign cystic appearance with a focus of undifferentiated carcinoma. Serologic tests for Epstein-Barr virus were negative. A positron emission tomography scan and upper aerodigestive tract endoscopies were negative for any other suspicious lesion. RESULTS:

Cervical metastasis of gingival carcinoma misdiagnosed as branchiogenic carcinoma, a rare entity - report of a case and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: A cervical cystic mass is associated with a number of pathologies that present with similar symptoms. These conditions are difficult to differentiate using fine-needle aspiration (FNA), ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Another dilemma in the differential diagnosis of cervical cystic masses is due to the controversies associated with the existence of branchiogenic carcinoma (BC). BC is an extremely rare disease that must be differentiated from other conditions presenting with cervical cystic masses, especially cystic metastasis from occ

Parapharyngeal cyst: considerations on embryology, clinical evaluation, and surgical management.

Branchial cleft anomalies represent a common cause of cervical mass in adults. Describing a case report, we reviewed embryology, clinical elements, and treatment options for parapharyngeal congenital cysts. A case of a parapharyngeal cyst mimicking a tonsillar abscess is presented. A second branchial cleft cyst was hypothesized on a clinical and radiologic basis and then confirmed by histologic data. Magnetic resonance imaging provided fundamental information for the study of the parapharyngeal mass and its relationship with surrounding structures. In literature, surgical excision is the recom

Branchial cleft anomalies and their mimics: computed tomographic evaluation.

A review was made of the clinical records and radiographic examinations of 38 patients with neck lesions clinically suspected of being branchial cleft anomalies. The impact of computed tomography in this sometimes confusing clinical picture was assessed and CT criteria for diagnosing branchial cleft anomalies (BCAs) and differentiating them from their mimics were identified. Seventeen branchial cleft anomalies (four of the first branchial cleft and 13 of the second branchial cleft) and 21 BCA mimics were evaluated. A definitive CT diagnosis of second branchial cleft cysts based on characterist

Diagnostic use of ultrasound in diseases of the head and neck.

Ultrasound has been utilized for diagnostic purposes for the past ten years. It was originally utilized mainly in ophthalmology and obstetrics and gynecology, although recently it has proven invaluable in diagnosis of cardiac and abdominal diseases. While there have been some reports on its use in thyroid and parotid diseases, there are few reports on its general use in the diagnosis of head and neck diseases. This technique is non-invasive and is cost effective when compared to CAT scanning. Ultrasound is capable of differentiating not only cystic from solid lesions but also can be helpful in
