The limitations and advantages of the different ultrasonic breast-scanner (manual and automated) were described, likewise experiences with an automated waterpath scanner (Octoson). For breast cancer screening the automated scanner seems to be an acceptable concept, because it manifests the breast with an excellent anatomic view. We acquired images of breast malignancies using the Twente photoacoustic mammoscope (PAM), to obtain more information about the clinical feasibility and limitations of photoacoustic mammography. Nine girls presenting under the age of 7 years with unsustained sexual precocity are described. Large ovarian cysts were detected by ultrasound in three and laparotomy in one. A woman with a history of cured breast cancer and multiple trips to India presented with a cervical nodule. Primarily suspected as metastasis of breast cancer, histopathology, however, showed the scolex of Taenia solium. A perimenopausal woman presented with a slowly enlarging right axillary mass initially suspected to be a sebaceous cyst. An incisional biopsy revealed high-grade invasive ductal carcinoma arising from accessory axillary breast tissue. Imaging showed no orthotopic breast lesion and staging was cT1N0M0. She underwent axillary lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy, confirming pT1bN0M0 invasive carcinoma. PURPOSE: To evaluate retrospectively the findings at ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of masses in breasts that contain a prosthesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Real-time US-guided FNAB was performed in 22 lesions in 17 patients with breast implants. Pneumocystography was performed in seven of eight cysts. The final diagnosis was based on either histologic findings after surgical excision or a combination of cytologic, imaging, and clinical findings.

To assess the importance of various risk factors for breast cancer in women with benign proliferative breast lesions, we reevaluated 10,366 consecutive breast biopsies performed in women who had presented at three Nashville hospitals. We report a case of Burkitt's lymphoma, which was suspected to involve both breasts. US showed a replacement of the normal breast tissues by a diffusely mixed or mottled pattern of echo texture, associated by hypoechoic cyst-like masses with slight internal echogenicity. This pattern was indistinguishable from the sonographic changes produced by a mastopathy. These findings disappeared after successful chemotherapy for the Burkitt's lymphoma, suggesting that the ultrasonographic pattern of mastopathy was caused by the infiltration of the breast tissues by the lymphomatous cells.

Galactocele is an uncommon benign breast lesion. Its cause is unknown. Here, we report a male infant with Down syndrome and congenital hypothyroidism during the newborn period. At follow up, when he was 6 months old, bilateral mammillary swelling was detected and diagnosed as galactocele. Although thyroid hormone levels were normal, serum prolactin levels were elevated. Cyst aspiration was performed on the left side and 6 months after the aspiration of the cyst on the left side, both cysts had clinically and sonographically regressed. No recurrence was observed at the end of the 4th year.

The greatest utility for ultrasound of the breast is in the differentiation of cysts from solid masses. After complete, high quality x-ray mammography, a palpable mass or nonpalpable mammographic abnormality may remain indeterminate in etiology, and ultrasound may be useful as an adjunctive diagnostic modality. However, present ultrasound technology is poor for visualization of small solid masses, particularly in fatty breasts, and it cannot reliably detect microcalcifications. Therefore, sonography has no role in screening for breast cancer.
