A new strain of actinobacteria, designated ACD1, was isolated from a Saharan soil sample in the Hoggar region (Algeria). Morphological study led to this strain being classified as a member of the Actinomadura genus. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that the strain is closely related to Actinomadura sediminis DSM 45500(T) (98.5% sequence similarity). The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne, is a serious global pest that preys on stored food products. Larvae of the beetle cannot grow on roasted coffee beans or dried black or green tea leaves, although they oviposit on such products. Rhododendrol is a phenolic compound that shows a tyrosinase-dependent toxicity for melanocytes and occasionally induces a vitiligo-like skin depigmentation. The post-tyrosinase mechanisms determining melanocyte death or survival, however, are far from clear. Recently, an unexpected outbreak of patients with leukoderma occurred in Japan with the use of brightening/lightening cosmetics containing rhododendrol (RD). Patients developed leukoderma mostly on the skin sites repeatedly applied with RD, but some patients also had vitiligo-like lesions on the non-applied sites.
