Assessing ecological and physiological costs of melanism in North American Papilio glaucus females: two decades of dark morph frequency declines.

Polymorphisms for melanic form of insects may provide various selective advantages. However, melanic alleles may have significant/subtle pleiotrophic "costs." Several potential pleiotrophic effects of the W (=Y)-linked melanism gene in Papilio glaucus L. (Lepidoptera) showed no costs for melanic versus yellow in adult size, oviposition preferences, fecundity, egg viability, larval survival/growth rates, cold stress tolerance, or postdiapause emergence times. Sexual selection (males choosing yellow rather than mimetic dark females) had been suggested to provide a balanced polymorphism in P. gla

Insights into the venom composition and evolution of an endoparasitoid wasp by combining proteomic and transcriptomic analyses.

Parasitoid wasps are abundant and diverse hymenopteran insects that lay their eggs into the internal body (endoparasitoid) or on the external surface (ectoparasitoid) of their hosts. To make a more conducive environment for the wasps' young, both ecto- and endoparasitoids inject venoms into the host to modulate host immunity, metabolism and development. Endoparasitoids have evolved from ectoparasitoids independently in different hymenopteran lineages. Pteromalus puparum, a pupal endoparasitoid of various butterflies, represents a relatively recent evolution of endoparasitism within pteromalids…

Chemosensory proteins, major salivary factors in caterpillar mandibular glands.

Research in the field of insect-host plant interactions has indicated that constituents of insect saliva play an important role in digestion and affect host chemical defense responses. However, most efforts have focused on studying the composition and function of regurgitant or saliva produced in the labial glands. Acknowledging the need for understanding the role of the mandibular glands in herbivory, we sought to make a qualitative and semi-quantitative comparison of soluble luminal protein fractions between mandibular and labial glands of Vanessa gonerilla butterfly larvae. Amylase and lyso

Regulatory changes underlying the evolution of skylight navigation.

Polarized skylight is an ancient navigational cue for many animals. In insects, its detection relies on the dorsal rim area (DRA), a special … regulated by cooperative transcription factor activity. Newly generated antibodies from honeybees, butterflies, and mosquitoes reveal no hth expression in their DRAs, whereas hth is expressed across higher flies (Brachycera), coinciding with the loss of its homolog Pknox/Prep1. Phylogenetic comparisons therefore suggest that hth's role in DRA specification a …

Vertebral anomalies in monozygotic twins.

In an 8-year-old pair of monozygotic twins a T8 butterfly vertebra was found in one and a coronally cleft T8 vertebra in the other. Differential diagnostic possibilities include trauma, Scheuerman's disease, tuberculosis, and infiltrative disorders, such as Gaucher's disease and malignancies. The literature however, describes them as separate entities. A common congenital origin for both lesions is discussed and the literature reviewed.

A comparison between open and percutaneous needle biopsies in men with azoospermia.

Open testicular biopsy is a classic method of investigation in men with azoospermia. Recently, percutaneous needle biopsy of the testis has been used in attempts to obtain material for histopathological diagnosis in such cases and to retrieve spermatozoa for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). To determine whether a 19 gauge (G) and a 21G butterfly needle could be used for percutaneous aspiration of testicular tissue to determine the presence of mature spermatids and assess spermatogenesis, 10 patients (16 testes) and 12 patients (17 testes) underwent 19G or 21G needle biopsy respectively

Phylogeography and genetic diversity of Pieris rapae across continents.

The small cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) is a globally distributed agricultural pest that has successfully colonized most continents through natural and human-mediated dispersal. This study investigates the global genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure of Pieris rapae using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences. A total of 1,133 sequences from five continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania) were analyzed to assess haplotype diversity, nucleotide diversity, population structure, and evolutionary relationships. Across the dataset, 117 ha

Insecticidal activity of manuka essential oil triketones against two major lepidopteran pests.

BACKGROUND: Caterpillars of moths and butterflies represent some of the most destructive agricultural pests and have become increasingly resistant to synthetic chemical insecticides. Manuka essential oil is known to be a potent alternative to synthetic insecticides, but its potential to control caterpillar pests remains underexplored. We evaluated the toxicity of manuka essential oil and its components against third-instar larvae of Trichoplusia ni and Chrysodeixis includens. We also evaluated their potential phytotoxic effects against cabbage, soybean, and corn. RESULTS: Manuka essential oil…

Contrasting plant transcriptome responses between a pierce-sucking and a chewing herbivore go beyond the infestation site.

BACKGROUND: Plants have acquired a repertoire of mechanisms to combat biotic stressors, which may vary depending on the feeding strategies of herbivores and the plant species. Hormonal regulation crucially modulates this malleable defense response. Jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) stand out as pivotal regulators of defense, while other hormones like abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene (ET), gibberellic acid (GA) or auxin also play a role in modulating plant-pest interactions. The plant defense response has been described to elicit effects in distal tissues, whereby aboveground herbivory ca

Autosomal dominant inheritance with sex-limited manifestation: An unusual mode of transmission in humans and animals.

Autosomal dominant, sex-limited inheritance is a distinct mode of transmission that should not be conflated with X-linked inheritance. From … tance is a well-established phenomenon that has extensively been studied in various species such as butterflies, damselflies, fish (cichlids), and birds. Hence, at this point in time, it seems likely that other human examples of this mode of inheritance have previously been reported or will be published in the future.

Creating new guidelines on how best to treat foot symptoms in people with EB.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a complex rare condition that affects the skin and many parts of the body. Those born with EB have skin so fragile they are called 'butterfly children', their skin is quite simply as fragile as the wing of a butterfly. In the UK it is estimated that there are more than 5,000 people living with EB and 500,000 worldwide. Little clinical guidance for care existed until DEBRA International started a programme to develop clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). There were no previous guidelines and few published studies on foot care in EB so treatment decisions were largel

A comprehensive look at phobic fear in inhibition of return: Phobia-related spiders as cues and targets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The so called inhibition of return (IOR) effect refers to a bias against returning attention to a location which was previously investigated. Because emotionally salient material has the capacity to capture and hold attention it has been suggested that this material may disrupt this otherwise impressively stable phenomenon. METHODS: 40 students participated in the experiment. Black and white schematic drawings of a spider, a butterfly or a cross were used as cues. A black dot, a spider, a butterfly or a cross were used as targets. Participants were required to press

Caterpillar bodies: distinctive, basement membrane-containing structures in blisters of porphyria.

In a previous study, we reported on the observation of a relatively specific, linear body in the roofs of bullae from cases of porphyria cutanea tarda. In the present study, we expand on these observations to show the presence of these bodies in lesions of pseudoporphyria cutanea tarda and erythropoietic protoporphyria. Furthermore, we have applied immunoperoxidase techniques using antibodies to type IV collagen and laminin to show that they are composed of basement membrane material. Because the segmented, elongated shapes of these bodies reminded us of the larvae of butterflies, we coined th…

Energetics of swimming at maximal speeds in humans.

The energy cost per unit of distance (Cs, kilojoules per metre) of the front-crawl, back, breast and butterfly strokes was assessed in 20 elite swimmers. At sub-maximal speeds (v), Cs was measured dividing steady-state oxygen consumption (VO2) by the speed (v, metres per second). At supra-maximal v, Cs was calculated by dividing the total metabolic energy (E, kilojoules) spent in covering 45.7, 91.4 and 182.9 m by the distance. E was obtained as: E = Ean + alphaVO2maxtp - alphaVO2maxtau(1 - e(-(tp/tau))), where Ean was the amount of energy (kilojoules) derived from anaerobic sources, VO2max li

On-Ice Functional Assessment of an Elite Ice Hockey Goaltender After Treatment for Femoroacetabular Impingement.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a major cause of performance inhibition in elite-level athletes. The condition is characterized by pain, osseous abnormalities such as an increased alpha angle, and decreased range of motion at the affected hip joint. Arthroscopic surgical decompression is useful in reshaping the joint to alleviate symptoms. Functional kinematic outcomes of sport-specific movements after surgery, however, are presently unknown. HYPOTHESIS: The ability of an ice hockey goaltender to execute sport-specific movements would improve after arthroscopic surgery. STU

Compressive rib fracture: peri-mortem and post-mortem trauma patterns in a pig model.

Despite numerous studies on high impact fractures of ribs, little is known about compressive rib injuries. We studied rib fractures from a biomechanical and morphological perspective using 15, 5th ribs of domestic pigs Sus scrofa, divided into two groups, desiccated (representing post-mortem trauma) and fresh ribs with intact periosteum (representing peri-mortem trauma). Ribs were axially compressed and subjected to four-point bending in an Instron 3339 fitted with custom jigs. Morphoscopic analysis of resultant fractures consisted of standard optical methods, micro-CT (μCT) and scanning elect
