Cadmium-mediated autophagy increases ferroptosis of ovarian granulosa cells.

Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive environmental toxicant that poses significant threats to female reproductive health. Accumulating evidence has linked Cd exposure to ovarian dysfunction and infertility. As critical somatic components of ovarian follicles, granulosa cells (GCs) regulate folliculogenesis and oocyte maturation, and their dysfunction is implicated in various reproductive disorders including premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, the precise mechanisms underlying Cd-induced GC injury are not yet fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that Cd…

Sequential Infiltration Synthesis of Cadmium Sulfide Discrete Atom Clusters.

Exposure of soft material templates to alternating volatile chemical precursors can produce inorganic deposition within the permeable template (e.g. a polymer thin film) in a process akin to atomic layer deposition (ALD). While such sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) processes have now been demonstrated for many metal oxides, we report an SIS process for a transition metal sulfide - CdS. Gas phase dimethyl cadmium and hydrogen sulfide precursors infiltrated into poly(4-vinylpyridine) thin films result in the 3D-nucleation of clusters consistent with a cubane-type Cd4S4 core that are varia…

Cadmium spurred Microcystis aeruginosa to unleash more toxic metabolites.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs), normally dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems due to the release of various harmful metabolites. Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal commonly found in surface water and sediments, often coincides with cHABs in eutrophic lakes. However, the ecotoxicological effects of Cd on M. aeruginosa and the potential for combined toxicity are not yet fully understood. In this study, we determined the effective concentrations of cadmium from 10 % (EC10) to 50 % (EC50) for M. aeruginosa based on cell density inhibition. We then conducte…

Cadmium-Induced Bone Toxicity: Deciphering the Osteoclast-Osteoblast Crosstalk.

Cadmium (Cd), a pervasive environmental and industrial toxicant, bioaccumulates and exerts severe detrimental effects on skeletal integrity across diverse animal species. Cd-induced bone injury manifests as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and increased fracture risk, posing significant health and welfare concerns for wildlife and livestock inhabiting contaminated ecosystems. The pathogenesis hinges critically on the disruption of bone remodeling, a tightly regulated process orchestrated by osteoclasts (OCs) responsible for bone resorption and osteoblasts (OBs) responsible for bone formation. This …

Unveiling the Hub Genes Involved in Cadmium-Induced Hepatotoxicity.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that can cause severe liver damage in both humans and animals. However, the specific genes responsible for Cd-induced hepatotoxicity are still not fully understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the key genes associated with Cd-induced liver damage. To achieve this, we utilized the GSE19662 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), which consisted of rat hepatocyte samples treated with cadmium chloride (CdCl2) as well as control groups. By focusing on rat hepatocytes treated with 0.10 ppm of CdCl2, the study identified 851 dif…

Testicular dysfunction and "its recovery effect" after cadmium exposure.

In recent years, with the acceleration of industrialization, the decline of male fertility caused by heavy metal pollution has attracted much attention. However, whether the inhibition of testicular function after cadmium exposure is reversible remains to be studied. In this study, we constructed rat models of cadmium exposure and dis-exposure, and collected relative samples to observe the changes of related indicators. The results showed that cadmium exposure could reduce the fertility, inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-testis axis and activate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function, t…

Environmental Cadmium Exposure Exacerbated Bone Loss in NAFLD Mice.

Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, Cadmium (Cd) contamination is widespread. Meanwhile, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing. Cd is linked to bone damage. However, the osteotoxicity of environmental Cd exposure in NAFLD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of Cd on bone metabolism in NAFLD mice. NAFLD mice were treated with 50 mg/L cadmium chloride in drinking water for 12 weeks. Bone microstructures were scanned by Micro-CT. Liver lipid droplets and fibrosis were measured by his…

Silymarin modulates cadmium-induced oxidative stress in human spermatozoa.

Environmental pollutants such as cadmium can negatively affect sperm parameters and decrease male fertility by inducing oxidative stress. Antioxidants are considered a useful strategy for oxidative stress conditions to neutralize free radicals and strengthen the antioxidant defence system. In this study, the effects of the common application of silymarin, as a natural antioxidant, with cadmium were assessed on human sperm. The washed human sperm samples were divided into five groups: (1) spermatozoa at 0- hour; (2) spermatozoa at 3 h; (3) spermatozoa treated with cadmium (20 μM) for 3 h; (4) s…

Bayesian toxicokinetic modeling of cadmium exposure in Chinese population.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal widely present in the environment. Estimating its internal levels for a given external exposure using toxicokinetic (TK) models is key to the human health risk assessment of Cd. In this study, existing Cd TK models were adapted to develop a one-compartment TK model and a multi-compartment physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model by estimating the characteristics of Cd kinetics based on Cd exposure data from 814 Chinese residents. Both models not only considered the effect of gender difference on Cd kinetics, but also described the model parameters in…

Does nitrogen source influence cadmium distribution in Arabidopsis plants?

The purpose of the present work was to study the effect of the nitrogen source (NO3- vs NH4+) on cadmium (Cd) uptake, translocation and partition and its associated toxicity in hydroponically-grown Arabidopsis plants. After a short growth period on a complete Hoagland nutrient solution, Arabidopsis seedlings continued in the same growth medium (NA) or were switched to NO3- (N) or NH4+ (A) as sole N sources and supplied with 2.5 μM Cd. Unrelated to the nitrogen source, Cd reached higher levels in roots than in leaves. However, when ammonium was the source of nitrogen, Cd accumulation in roots w…

A nomogram to predict cadmium-induced renal tubular dysfunction.

Cadmium-induced renal dysfunction varies between individuals. It would be valuable to figure out those susceptible individuals or predict the risk of cadmium induced renal dysfunction. In the present study, we used a nomogram model to identify high-risk of cadmium-induced renal tubular dysfunction. 342 subjects living in low and moderately cadmium polluted areas were included in this study. The daily cadmium intake from food (FCd) was estimated using food survey. The cadmium in blood (BCd) and urine (UCd) were detected by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Urinary β2Microglobulin (UBM…

Cadmium disrupts the DNA damage response by destabilizing RNF168.

Cadmium (Cd) is a dispensable element for the human body and is usually considered a carcinogen. Occupational and environmental Cd exposure leads to sustained cellular proliferation in some tissues and tumorigenesis via an unclear mechanism. Here, we evaluated the role of Cd in the DNA damage response (DDR). We found that Cd exposure causes extensive DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and prevents accumulation of ubiquitination signals at these sites of DNA damage. Cd treatment compromises 53BP1 and BRCA1 recruitment to DSBs induced by itself or DNA damaging agents and partially inactivates the G…

Effective methods to reduce cadmium accumulation in rice grain.

Contamination of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soil is a serious environmental problem threatening food safety in some parts of southern China, where rice grain Cd concentration often exceeds the Chinese limit (0.2 mg kg-1). We tested the effect of CaCO3 liming combined with growing low Cd cultivars on Cd accumulation in rice grain in 2-year field trials. A liming model was used to predict the doses of lime required. Lime (2.25-7.5 t ha-1) was applied in 2016 only and the effect monitored in both 2016 and 2017. Soil pH was increased from the initial 5.5 to the target value 6.5 by 7.5 t ha-1 CaCO3. Lim…

Cadmium-Free Quantum Dots as Fluorescent Labels for Exosomes.

Quantum dots are attractive alternatives to organic fluorophores for the purposes of fluorescent labeling and the detection of biomarkers. They can also be made to specifically target a protein of interest by conjugating biomolecules, such as antibodies. However, the majority of the fluorescent labeling using quantum dots is done using toxic materials such as cadmium or lead due to the well-established synthetic processes for these quantum dots. Here, we demonstrate the use of indium phosphide quantum dots with a zinc sulfide shell for the purposes of labeling and the detection of exosomes der…

Effect of Cadmium on Human Middle Ear Epithelial Cells.

OBJECTIVE: Cadmium (Cd(2+)) exposure can occur through passive smoking, ambient air pollution, and food. Even low exposure can affect hearing and cause lung disease. Here we investigated whether cadmium causes cytotoxicity, induces inflammation, or increases mucin gene expression in immortalized human middle ear epithelial cells (HMEECs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell viability was investigated using the MTT assay following Cd(2+) treatment. Increases in apoptosis and necrosis were determined, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured. We analyzed the expression of an inf…

Lead and cadmium sorption mechanisms on magnetically modified biochars.

This paper discusses Cd(II) and Pb(II) sorption efficiency of biochars modified by impregnation with magnetic particles. All selected biochar characteristics were significantly affected after the modification. More specifically, the cation exchange capacity increased after the modification, except for grape stalk biochar. However, the changes in the pH value, PZC, and BET surface after modification process were less pronounced. The metal loading rate was also significantly improved, especially for Cd(II) sorption on/in nut shield and plum stone biochars (10- and 16-times increase, respectively
