An unusual case of dystrophic calcinosis that occurred following trauma is presented. Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of calcium phosphate into the skin. It is classified as dystrophic if calcium and phosphorous levels are normal and tissue damage is present, idiopathic if calcium and phosphorous levels are normal and no tissue damage is present, or metastatic if there is hypercalcemia or hyperphosphatemia. The numerous causes of underlying tissue damage associated with dystrophic calcinosis are discussed.

Subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN) is a clinical form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, which commonly affects children, and presents as yellowish-white lesions involving the face. It is often misdiagnosed for other disorders like warts and molluscum contagiosum and treated by ablative procedures. In such a scenario, lack of histopathological examination makes it difficult to reach the correct diagnosis. We here report a case of SCN which was diagnosed after an excisional biopsy. Further, histopathological finding of dermal calcium deposits must prompt the clinician to rule out other disorders …

Idiopathic subepidermal calcinosis, also known as idiopathic calcinosis cutis, is a rare condition, which typically presents as a small, hard, subepithelial mass in the absence of systemic disease and trauma. We report on an atypical case of idiopathic calcinosis, which appeared in an otherwise healthy 61-year-old female along the tarsus of her right upper eyelid. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate idiopathic calcinosis in an unusual location that is deep to the dermis and to discuss the vast differential diagnosis of this entity.

Injection-site calcinosis is a rare complication of interferon-β therapy in multiple sclerosis. We report a 52-year-old woman with stable bilateral gluteal calcifications after long-term subcutaneous interferon-β-1b therapy. Findings were most consistent with probable dystrophic calcinosis cutis secondary to chronic repeated injection-site trauma.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common inflammatory myopathy in children and is characterised by the presence of proximal muscle weakness, heliotrope dermatitis, Gottron's papules and occasionally auto antibodies. The disease primarily affects skin and muscles, but can also affect other organs. Renal manifestations though common in autoimmune conditions like lupus are rare in JDM. We describe a child whose presenting complaint was extensive calcinosis cutis. Subtle features of proximal muscle weakness were detected on examination. MRI of thighs and a muscle biopsy confirmed myositis…

Tumoral calcinosis is a rare and benign subtype of calcinosis cutis, a group of disorders involving soft tissue calcium deposition. Only 250 cases have been described since 1898; hand involvement is exceedingly rare. We report a case of extensive calcinosis within the flexor sheath of the little finger. Presentation included a painful mass over the volar aspect of the little finger, restricted digit motion, and skin compromise at the site of the mass. Surgical debulking was performed resulting in restoration of finger function.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous calcification, or calcinosis cutis (CC), is found in approximately 1% of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing chronic dialysis. While the pathogenesis is not well understood, it may be similar to those for medial and intimal vascular calcifications, which are actively regulated processes.
OBSERVATION: In a retrospective study of 9 patients, the role of an active calcification process leading to CC was assessed by the immunohistochemical detection of osteopontin, which is a regulator of osseous and extra-osseous calcification processes. Calcinosis cutis…

The subepidermal calcified nodule, also known as cutaneous calculi, is a form of idiopathic calcinosis that affects children and is occasionally present at birth. It occurs usually in the facial skin and has no relationship to connective tissue disease or to any abnormality in calcium or phosphorus metabolism. The oral cavity is very rarely affected by calcinosis cutis of any type, and idiopathic calcinosis has not been previously reported in the oral mucosa. This is a report of two cases of calcified nodules that occurred in the gingiva of a 1-year-old girl and the tongue of a 5-year-old boy.…

BACKGROUND: Scrotal calcinosis is a rare and benign condition. It usually gives rise to few symptoms, and the impact is mainly functional and aesthetic. It is considered part of dystrophic calcinosis cutis. Surgical management is the only curative approach, and recurrence has been described in few cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report cases of two North African white patients with operated scrotal calcinosis. We describe the clinical and histological aspects as well as a pathogenic hypothesis and surgical management principles.
CONCLUSIONS: A surgical approach to scrotal calcinosis must consid…

Calcinosis cutis affects 20-40% of patients with systemic sclerosis. This study tests the hypothesis that calcium-chelating polycarboxylic acids can induce calcium dissolution without skin toxicity or irritancy. We compared citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to sodium thiosulfate (STS) for their ability to chelate calcium in vitro using a pharmaceutical dissolution model of calcinosis (hydroxyapatite (HAp) tablet), prior to evaluation of toxicity and irritancy in 2D in vitro skin models. Resultant data was used to predict therapeutic concentrations for application in a…

Calcium deposition within soft tissues is a significant pathological process, bearing significant implications for animal and human health. It is classified into four categories, including dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, and iatrogenic. It involves multiple molecular mechanisms. Vascular calcification includes medial artery mineralization, siderocalcinosis in equine cerebral arteries, and vitamin D-induced arterial mineralization in multiple species. Renal and urinary mineralization occurs with kidney disease, uremic gastropathy, and ethylene glycol toxicity. Calcinosis cutis is associated…

INTRODUCTION: Calcinosis cutis is a common complication of pediatric rheumatologic diseases. However, there is currently no consensus on first-line treatment. Bisphosphonates have been described as a successful treatment in several case studies, but most of these cases are limited to patients with isolated juvenile dermatomyositis or systemic sclerosis. Specifically, there are limited reports of their usefulness in treating overlap syndromes and mixed connective tissue disorders.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 13 year-old girl with overlap syndrome with features of juvenile derm…

Background and Clinical Significance: Dystrophic calcinosis cutis involves calcium deposition in damaged or chronically inflamed tissues despite normal calcium and phosphate metabolism. Although typically associated with systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis, it is rare in rheumatoid arthritis. Ulceration over calcified deposits may impair healing and function. This case highlights a staged reconstructive strategy to remove calcified tissue and achieve definitive wound closure. Case Presentation: A 73-year-old woman with a 22-year history of rheumatoid arthritis presented with painful, partia…

Calcinosis cutis refers to the deposition of calcium salts in the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue and is frequently associated with inflammation. Gastric calcinosis can be classified into metastatic, dystrophic, and idiopathic; metastatic calcinosis is the most common type. In metastatic calcification, calcium salts are deposited in normal soft tissues in the setting of altered metabolism of serum calcium and phosphorus and is a rare and serious complication of chronic renal failure. The important factors contributing to the development of metastatic calcinosis are hypercalcemia, hyperphosph…
