The author presented the results of 7 experiments in which he followed with his co-workers the effect of preventively applied aerosol inhalations with rats and rabbits, dusted with quartz or coal dust. Aerosol inhalations of alkaline mineral water "Vincentka" and of salt mixtures, especially of calcium salts affected in some experiments favourably the development of lung dust changes, in other cases on the contrary they did not. The best effect was proved by polyvinylpyridin-N-oxide (PNO). The author described further his experience with aerosoltherapy in persons affected by inhalation of etch

Hypocalcemia is a rare condition that causes dilated cardiomyopathy and can result in heart failure. Patients with hypocalcemia have been reported to recover in 3 to 12 months after calcium and vitamin D replacement therapy as well as treatment of heart failure. A 6-month-old male patient who presented with dyspnea was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy. Blood biochemistry revealed hypocalcemia and vitamin D deficiency. After administration of anticongestive treatment, positive inotropic support, as well as vitamin D and calcium supplementa

The effects of different factors on leukocyte adherence was evaluated by using human peripheral blood before and after treatment (application). Magnesium ions, anti-inflammatory drugs and dextran have decreased neutrophil adherence. Calcium ions, propranolol, blood transfusion caused a significant decrease in adherence. These findings support the conclusion that the adherence test, which is influenced by numerous factors and whose results had a wide scatter, is not a useful tool in clinical diagnosis.

Deletions of chromosome 22q11 cause a wide range of phenotypes; even affected members from the same family may present with different phenotype. We present an 11-3/12 year-old boy who has 22q11 deletion in a hitherto unreported combination with psychiatric disorder, hypoparathyroidism and precocious puberty. Whether precocious puberty is a clue for chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome is also discussed.

Low-birth-weight infants requiring total parenteral nutrition receive inadequate intakes of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) due to poor solubility of available mineral salts. To optimize Ca/P delivery, we tested the effects on in vitro solubility of mineral salt:calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) versus calcium gluconate and K2HPO4 (CG + P); Ca:P ratios of 1:1 (at 12.5 and 25 mmol/L of Ca and P) and 2:1 (25:12.5 mmol/L); amino acid (AA) formulation: Aminosyn (A), Aminosyn-PF (A-PF), TrophAmine (T) or Vaminolac (V); and AA concentration (25 versus 8.3 g/L). Self-healing hydrogels have attracted significant attention in chronic diabetic wound healing due to their potential to minimize the risk of secondary infections caused by joint movement or dressing rupture. Herein, a multifunctional self-healing hydrogel mediated utilizing an enzyme-triggered cascade reaction based on dynamic imine bonds was designed. The hydrogel employs three enzymes: lysozyme (LYZ), glucose oxidase (GOx), and catalase (CAT), as building blocks. GOx catalyzes the conversion of glucose and 1-thio-β-d-glucose (β-GlcSH) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), gluconic acid (GA), and hy

Hyperkalemia is one of the dangerous complications of renal impairment (acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease). Hyperkalemia may present with the electrocardiogram (ECG) changes as nonspecific repolarization abnormalities. Here, we report a case of AKI with hyperkalemia and the Brugada pattern of ECG, which reverted to normal after effective management of hyperkalemia. A 55-year-old male reported to the Emergency Department of National Academy of Medical Sciences (Bir Hospital) with injuries in his lower limbs and spine after he had met an accident two days back. He also had decreased

In this article the authors describe a modified surgical technique developed to enhance the classical irrigation and debridement procedure to improve the possibilities of retaining a total hip arthroplasty (THA) undergoing acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This technique, debridement antibiotic pearls and retention of the implant (DAPRI), aims to remove the intra-articular biofilm allowing a higher and prolonged local antibiotic concentration by using calcium sulphate antibiotic-added beads. The combination of 3 different surgical techniques (tumour-like synovectomy, Argon Beam appli

The manifestation of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) occurs when the destruction of tumor cells releases breakdown products that overwhelm the excretory mechanisms of the body. A cardinal sign is hyperuricemia, leading to uric acid nephropathy. Other signs are hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia and secondary hypocalcemia. Conventional management of TLS consists of aggressive intravenous hydration, diuretic therapy, urinary alkalization, and inhibition of urate production by high-dose allopurinol. Urate oxidase has been used in the management of patients at risk for TLS and recently the recombinant ura

BACKGROUND: Short-chain fatty acids produced by bacterial fermentation in the colon enhance the local absorption of cations, such as calcium, that could be used to improve the bioavailability of iron if a significant colonic absorption of iron were to occur.
METHODS: Iron (iron gluconate, 100 microM) absorption by the caecum of the rat was compared with that in proximal sites of the small bowel using the Ussing chamber model; the influence of probiotic bacteria (Propionibacterium freudenreichii) on iron absorption was assessed and compared with that of two of their fermentation products (acet

OBJECTIVE: While activation of the calcium (Ca) sensing receptor (CaSR) suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, calcitonin (CT) secretion is stimulated via CaSR. The aim of this study was to evaluate PTH and CT responses during a calcium infusion test (CIT) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT).
METHODS: This pivotal prospective study included 64 patients (44 PHPT patients vs. 20 healthy controls [HCs], median age 57 [25-79] vs. 56 [39-74] years). All PHPT patients underwent parathyroidectomy (PTX). A week before and 1 month after PTX, the CIT was performed (bolus infusi

The plasma pool of potassium is a partial reflection of the overall body, transient cellular shifts, and potassium elimination regulated by the kidneys. Potassium concentrations elevating above the upper limit of normal (> 5.0 mEq/L) have become more common in cardiovascular practice due to the growing population of patients with chronic kidney disease and the broad applications of drugs that modulate potassium excretion by either reducing production of angiotensin II (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, direct renin inhibitors, beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists), blocking angiotensin

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte disorder that can result in morbidity and mortality if not managed appropriately.
OBJECTIVES: This review evaluates the classic treatments of hyperkalemia and discusses controversies and new medications for management.
DISCUSSION: Potassium (K+) plays a key role in determining the transmembrane potentials of "excitable membranes" present in nerve and muscle cells. K+ is the predominant intracellular cation, and clinical deterioration typically ensues when patients develop sufficiently marked elevation in extracellular fluid concentrations of K

BACKGROUND: Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is an effective form of anticoagulation for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in patients with contraindications to heparin. Its use has been very limited, possibly because of the need for special infusion solutions and difficult monitoring of the metabolic effects.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and the feasibility of an RCA method for continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH) using commercially available replacement fluid.
METHODS: We evaluated 11 patients at high risk of bleeding, requiring CVVH. RCA was performed using
