Patients admitted to the hospital with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are at risk for acquiring mycotic infections in particular Candidemia. Candida albicans (C. albicans) constitutes an important component of the human mycobiome and the most common cause of invasive fungal infections. Invasive yeast infections are gaining interest among the scientific community as a consequence of complications associated with severe COVID-19 infections. Early identification and surveillance for Candida infections is critical for decreasing the COVID-19 mortality. Our current study attempted to understand the

Chronic diseminated candidiasis--mainly its hepatosplenic form- is one of the most characteristic invasive infection due to Candida in haematological patients. A case is presented of a 31 year old man admitted to the Clinical Department with acute mieloid leukosis M2, showing febrile neutropenia after induction and consolidation chemotherapy. Hepatoesplenic candidiasis was diagnosed and confirmed by computered axial tomography (CAT) and hepatic biopsy; amphotericin B followed by liposome encapsuled amphotericin B up to complete a total dose of 4 g was used for treatment. The patient was discha

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are increasing in prevalence in recent years. In the last few months, the rise of COVID-19 patients has generated a new escalation in patients presenting opportunistic mycoses, mainly by Aspergillus. Candida infections are not being reported yet.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the prevalence of systemic candidiasis in patients admitted to ICUs due to severe pneumonia secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection and the existence of possible associated risk factors that led these patients to develop candidiasis.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We designed a study includ

UNLABELLED: Candidiasis is relatively frequent in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (ICUs), particularly in preterm infants less than 28 weeks of gestational age. Neonatal candidiasis shows high mortality and is often associated to poor neurodevelopmental prognosis in survivor patients. Amphotericin B and fluconazole are the first choice drugs for the treatment of neonatal candidiasis. Caspofungin is an alternative antifungal agent, which is recommended for invasive candidiasis in adults, but has been poorly experienced in neonates and infants as far as now. We report the first two i

In a previous study, therapeutic activity of nikkomycin Z (NZ) in a model of invasive candidiasis did not appear to correlate with lesser activity in vitro (using classical MIC methods) with planktonic organisms. However, NZ potency was much greater assaying activity in vitro against germ tubes, the initiator of the invasive mycelial form of the fungus, as occurs in infected tissues. Synergy has been demonstrated for NZ and other drugs, notably fluconazole (the most commonly used drug against candidiasis), in planktonic testing, which correlated with results in vivo. This raised the question w

The presence of Candida in the urine of a seriously ill, pediatric patient presents a management problem because of a lack of information concerning the natural history of candiduria and its relationship to disseminated candidiasis. In this retrospective study, the outcome of candiduria was examined in a group of 54 pediatric patients to determine any predictors of disseminated candidiasis. Medical records were reviewed to identify urine collection methods, Candida colony counts, results of cultures from other body sites, antifungal therapy, and clinical course. Six (11%) of the 54 patients ha

Systemic infections related to fluconazole-resistant yeasts are increasingly observed in immunocompromised patients receiving fluconazole as a prophylactic antifungal treatment. Here, we report a case of invasive candidiasis caused by Candida ciferrii in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and who suffered a relapse after autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation. Erythematous skin papulae and spotted pulmonary infiltrations were present. A skin biopsy led to the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis, emphasizing the diagnostic usefulness of this procedure. The yeast was identi

Candida auris has recently emerged as the first fungal pathogen to cause a global public health threat. The reason this species is causing hospital-associated outbreaks of invasive candidiasis with high mortality is unknown. In this study, we examine the interaction of C. auris with neutrophils, leukocytes critical for control of invasive fungal infections. We show that human neutrophils do not effectively kill C. auris Compared to Candida albicans, neutrophils poorly recruited to C. auris and failed to form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are structures of DNA, histones, and prot

Patients in the intensive care unit are exposed to multiple stressors that predispose them to invasive fungal infections (IFIs), which carry high morbidity and mortality. Getting acquainted with the diagnostic methods and therapies is imperative for patient safety and for providing high-quality health care. This article focuses on the most frequent IFIs: invasive candidiasis and invasive aspergillosis.

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is a recently discovered yeast species first found in 2009 in the ear discharge of a patient in Japan. Known for its high mortality rate, strong transmissibility, ability to cause hospital outbreaks, and resistance to multiple drugs, it has earned the nickname "superbug". Currently, there are five main clades of Candida auris identified, including the South Asian, East Asian, South African, South American, and a newly discovered fifth clade in Iran. Infection cases have been documented in over 40 countries across six continents, drawing global attention. In 2022, the

Invasive fungal infections (candidiasis, aspergillosis and cryptococcosis) are major complications in immunocompromised patients and account for high morbidity and mortality. Guidelines on first-line therapy of invasive fungal infections are based on randomised clinical trials or experts' guidelines and include essentially single antifungal therapies, except for cryptococcosis. However, the severe prognosis of these infections raises the interest of antifungal associations, in first line or second-line therapy, and many experimental data have been published on this issue. In humans, amphoteric

Candida albicans is a common commensal fungus that colonizes the oropharyngeal cavity, gastrointestinal and vaginal tract, and healthy individuals' skin. In 50% of the population, C. albicans is part of the normal flora of the microbiota. The various clinical manifestations of Candida species range from localized, superficial mucocutaneous disorders to invasive diseases that involve multiple organ systems and are life-threatening. From systemic and local to hereditary and environmental, diverse factors lead to disturbances in Candida's normal homeostasis, resulting in a transition from normal

The management of congenital cutaneous candidiasis in a healthy term neonate of normal birth weight is unclear. Often, healthy term neonates undergo extensive evaluation followed by systemic treatment, which may not be clinically warranted. Here, we present a case of a healthy term neonate with congenital cutaneous candidiasis, whose work-up was minimally invasive and was successfully treated with one oral dose of antifungals and topical antifungals, as well as a review of the literature.

These updated guidelines from the American Society of Transplantation Infectious Diseases Community of Practice provide recommendations for the diagnosis and management of Candida infections in solid organ transplant recipients. Candida infections manifest primarily as candidemia and invasive candidiasis and cause considerable morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment are necessary to reduce mortality. For both candidemia and invasive candidiasis, an echinocandin is recommended for initial therapy. However, early transition to oral therapy is encouraged when patients
