Oswaldocruzia lamotheargumedoi n. sp., inhabiting the intestine of the cane toad, Rhinella marina (L.), in Laguna de Coyuca, Guerrero, México, is described here. The new species differs from 10 congeners infecting bufonid hosts because it has a type I bursa. In contrast, 7 of these species have type II bursa and 3 more a type III bursa. The species most similar to the species described herein is Oswaldocruzia pipiens Walton, 1929 . These 2 species share traits such as body size, bursa type, presence of cervical alae, and dorsal ray morphology. Nevertheless, both species can be distinguished ba

This chapter deals with neuro-ophthalmological diseases at different levels of the afferent visual pathways with special regard to visual field defects, their functional impact, and their rehabilitation. The nature of these impairments and their significance for activities of daily living can be quite varied; an exact assessment of the residual function is required to determine specific rehabilitation approaches. Rehabilitation aims to compensate for the visual deficits by means of specific training and visual aids. Visual field defects in the center cause reading disability. Preconditions for

The beneficial influences of xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) obtained from alkali-pretreated corncob and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) obtained from cane sugar were evaluated in experimental diabetes. These oligosaccharides were supplemented at 10 % (w/w) in the basal diet of streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats, while the control rats were fed with a basal diet for a period of 6 weeks. Both the oligosaccharides exerted favourable influences in diabetic rats by significantly improving body weight and reducing hyperglycaemia and cholesterol. The characteristic diabetic complications such as

Angel-shaped phalango-epiphyseal dysplasia is characterized by the angel shape of the middle phalanx and severe coxarthrosis in adult life. This osteochondrodysplasia shows a further variety of heterogeneous multiple epiphyseal dysplasias. It also shows a late and dysplastic development of the femoral head that leads to osteoarthrotic changes with severe hip pain and gait disturbance. In this report, we show a 35-year-old female with Angel-shaped phalango-epiphyseal dysplasia that was treated by bilateral total hip arthroplasty. She has suffered from her coxalgia since she was 27 and since the

AIM: Clinical and radiological examinations were performed to compare plate osteosynthesis (group 1) with replacement of the proximal femur by tumor prosthesis (group 2) in patients with ipsilateral femoral fractures around a hip prosthesis.
METHOD: Of 24 consecutive patients with 25 fractures, nine had died and one could be contacted by telephone leaving 14 hips (in one case only recent X-rays were available) for final review (nine patients from group 1; five from group 2).
RESULTS: At the time of examination four patients of group 1 were using one cane or were walking without any support,

UNLABELLED: The aims of this study were: 1) to evaluated the degree of walking of hemiplegic patients after femur fracture, 2) to evaluate if the neurological damage interferes with the recovery of walking. We studied 51 hemiplegic patients with femur fracture. All patients could walk without any help before the fracture. At the end of the rehabilitation period we had the following results: 5.8% of patients regained full walking independence; 37.2% walked with a cane; 43.1% with a quadripod; 9.8% walked with assistance; 3.9% remained unable to walk. 50.9% of them regained their prefracture fun

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to identify independent preoperative hip function characteristics sensitive for preoperative intervention that are predictive of an extended length of hospital stay (LOS) after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).
DESIGN: This is a longitudinal cohort study. A retrospective chart analysis was conducted on prospectively collected data of patients (158) who underwent unilateral primary elective cemented THA in a 4-yr period. The main outcome measure was LOS after primary THA.
RESULTS: The median LOS was 6.0 days. The authors found an 18.5% increased

BACKGROUND: Gait changes at older ages are a strong predictor of a decline in lower extremity functions. However, large population-based studies assessing gait parameters in various gait tasks are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship of age, the use of mobility aids and being fitted with an endoprosthesis with selected gait parameters, assessed in different walking tasks.
METHODS: In the population-based KORA-Age study, data from 907 men and women aged 65-91 years were obtained using the validated electronic walkway system GAITRite, which quantifies spatiotemporal gait parame

Studies on ligamentum flavum hematoma (LFH) have been gradually increasing; however, no study has reported an LFH spreading to the intraspinal and extraspinal spaces. The purpose of this report is to discuss this rare condition and report that extraspinal hematoma can be formed by LFH. The authors present the case of a 78-year-old man presented with right L5 radiculopathy caused by a space-occupying lesion with intraspinal and extraspinal expansions at the L4-L5 vertebral levels demonstrated on MRI. We tentatively diagnosed these lesions as intraspinal and extraspinal hematomas originating fro

We report the case of a 71-year-old woman with a skin ulcer derived from an abscess around the tibia. The abscess resulted in periprosthetic joint infection and osteomyelitis 11 years after total knee arthroplasty. The first symptom was a skin ulcer of the lower leg. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a circumferential mass around the proximal tibia. A skin biopsy taken around the ulcer showed thrombosis and degenerated collagen. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a circumferential mass around the proximal tibia with ring enhancement. Biopsies of the skin ulcer and circumferential m

The neural mechanisms of fear-associated thermoregulation remain unclear. Innate fear odor 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2MT) elicits rapid hypothermia and elevated tail temperature, indicative of vasodilation-induced heat dissipation, in wild-type mice, but not in mice lacking Trpa1-the chemosensor for 2MT. Here we report that Trpa1-/- mice show diminished 2MT-evoked c-fos expression in the posterior subthalamic nucleus (PSTh), external lateral parabrachial subnucleus (PBel) and nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). Whereas tetanus toxin light chain-mediated inactivation of NTS-projecting PSTh neuron

The Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare inherited ciliopathy, which is accompanied by retinal disease, i.e. rod-cone dystrophy (retinitis pigmentosa, RP) and other symptoms, especially truncal obesity, polydactyly, renal abnormalities as well as reduced intelligence or learning difficulties. 25 BBS genes are currently known, and these are responsible for the structure and function of primary cilia. Because ciliary integrity is crucial for numerous pathways of developmental signaling, their dysfunction may cause multisystemic disorders - like BBS. Physicians benefit greatly from new molecular

The rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) has emerged as an important human and animal health concern in Hawaii, US. Although the life cycle of the parasite requires both rat and gastropod hosts, other animals acting as paratenic hosts, such as frogs and centipedes, have been identified as sources of infection. We investigated the occurrence of rat lungworm infections in potential paratenic hosts in Hawaii to provide information on how they might be involved in transmission of angiostrongyliasis. We confirmed the presence of rat lungworm in 87% (21/24) of introduced Puerto Rican coqui fro

Aldehydes are important compounds in a large number of samples, especially food and beverages. In this work, for the first time, cyclohexane-1,3-dione (CHD) was used as a derivatizing reagent aiming aldehyde (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and valeraldehyde) analysis by MEKC-DAD. The optimized separation of the derivates was performed using a voltage program (+20 kV, 0-15 min.; +23 kV, 15-17 min.) at a temperature of 26°C, and using as the running buffer a mixture containing 100 mmol/L of sodium dodecyl sulfate and 29 mmol/L of sodium tetraborate at pH 9.2, with maximum absorbanc

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The incidence of West Nile virus (WNV) has increased in the United States since 1999. A small percentage of people with WNV develop West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) with encephalitis and flaccid paralysis. The purpose of this report is to describe the physical therapist management and outcomes for a patient with WNND and the therapist's efforts to use an evidence-based practice approach in the management of a patient with this disease.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was an active 55-year-old woman in excellent health who became acutely ill with asymmetrical lower-

Neurologic deficit secondary to a Jefferson fracture is rare, as the fracture fragments tend to spread outward. To the authors' knowledge, only five cases of vertebral artery injury associated with C1 fracture have been reported. A 75-year-old man with diffuse spinal hyperostosis hit the top of his head and sustained a Jefferson fracture. The patient presented with vertigo and slurred speech. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated cerebellar infarction, and MR angiography (MRA) showed bilateral vertebral artery occlusion associated with a Jefferson fracture. The patient was placed in a h

INDICATIONS: To relieve pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis, local treatments can be effective both for episodes of acute congestion, characterized by inflammatory pain, intraarticular effusion and risk of acute chondrolysis, and for slowly progressive disease (with a characteristic lack of effusion).
ACUTE CONGESTION: Local care is essential. Relief can be achieved by draining the effusion, associated with corticosteroid injections which may be repeated and followed by a 24 h rest. In case of failure or rapid development of chondrolysis, joint lavage (1 liter saline solution--two 2-mm
