Hyperoxia evokes pericyte-mediated capillary constriction.

Oxygen supplementation is regularly prescribed to patients to treat or prevent hypoxia. However, excess oxygenation can lead to reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) in healthy subjects and worsen the neurological outcome of critically ill patients. Most studies on the vascular effects of hyperoxia focus on arteries but there is no research on the effects on cerebral capillary pericytes, which are major regulators of CBF. Here, we used bright-field imaging of cerebral capillaries and modeling of CBF to show that hyperoxia (95% superfused O2) led to an increase in intracellular calcium level in per…

Capillary leak syndrome: State of the art in 2021.

Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is an increasingly acknowledged multifaceted and potentially lethal disease. Initial nonspecific symptoms are followed by the intriguing CLS hallmark: the double paradox associating diffuse severe edema and hypovolemia, along with hemoconcentration and hypoalbuminemia. Spontaneous resolutive phase is often associated with poor outcome due to iatrogenic fluid overload during leak phase. CLS is mainly triggered by drugs (anti-tumoral therapies), malignancy, infections (mostly viruses) and inflammatory diseases. Its idiopathic form is named after its eponymous finder

Misdiagnosis of capillary malformations in darker skin phototypes.

In the dermatologic medical literature, there is an underrepresentation of conditions in individuals of color. Due to the lack of representation, it may be harder for clinicians to recognize certain diagnoses in patients with darker skin phototypes leading to misdiagnosis and affecting overall patient management, outcomes, and satisfaction. Here, we present four Black or Indigenous People of Color who were initially referred for hyperpigmentation, hemihyperplasia, or café au lait spots and found to have syndromic capillary malformations.

Voltage control for microchip capillary electrophoresis analyses.

This paper presents an inexpensive and easy-to-implement voltage sequencer instrument for use in microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) actuation. The voltage sequencer instrument takes a 0-5 V input signal from a microcontroller and produces a reciprocally proportional voltage signal with the capability to achieve the voltages required for MCE actuation. The unit developed in this work features four independent voltage channels, measures 105 × 143 × 45 mm (width × length × height), and the cost to assemble is under 60 USD. The system is controlled by a peripheral interface controller and c

The capillary interaction between pairs of granular rafts.

When an object is placed at the surface of a liquid, its weight deforms the interface. For two identical spherical objects, such a deformation creates an attractive force, leading to the aggregation of the two-body system. Here, we experimentally investigate the interaction between two granular rafts, formed by the aggregation of dense millimeter-sized beads placed at an oil-water interface. The interfacial deformation created by such a two-dimensional object exceeds by at least an order of magnitude the deformation of a single bead. This leads to unusually high capillary forces which strongly

Complement Activation in Capillary Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is classified as type 1 with capillary amyloid β (Aβ) or type 2 without capillary Aβ. While it … s. Triple immunofluorescence revealed that C1q, C3d, and ApoE were colocalized with Aβ in CAA brain capillaries. CONCLUSION: Complement, MSR, and ApoE were only coexpressed in the presence of Aβ accumulation in capillaries, suggesting a role for complement activation in the propagation of Aβ. Additionally, C5b-9 expression may be associated with hemorrhagic …

Torpedo maculopathy: A primary choroidal capillary abnormality?

A 26-year-old healthy male patient's fundus revealed findings consistent with torpedo maculopathy. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed a dome-shaped elevation of the retina at the level of ellipsoid zone. On OCT angiography segmented at the level of the choriocapillaris, a cluster of convoluted fine vessels was seen, and further, deeper scans of the larger choroidal vessels showed a slower flow. From these observations along with the embryological correlation of choriocapillaris development, a possibility of an abnormality preventing proper fenestration of the choriocapillar

Vulvar Pyogenic Granuloma (Lobular Capillary Hemangioma).

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common vascular lesion of the skin and subcutaneous tissue and is usually found on the face, trunk, and limbs. It is well known by general surgeons. CASE: A 42-year-old woman attended our clinic due to a rapidly growing, glistening, ulcerative, pedunculated vulvar mass. The mass was excised and subsequent histopathology revealed it as PG, which was completely unexpected. We reviewed the previous reported cases to investigate its clinical behavior, incidence, and management. CONCLUSION: PG of the vulva is a common clinical misdiagnosis. It is the third m

Capillary leak syndrome: etiologies, pathophysiology, and management.

In various human diseases, an increase in capillary permeability to proteins leads to the loss of protein-rich fluid from the intravascular to the interstitial space. Although sepsis is the disease most commonly associated with this phenomenon, many other diseases can lead to a "sepsis-like" syndrome with manifestations of diffuse pitting edema, exudative serous cavity effusions, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, hypotension, and, in some cases, hypovolemic shock with multiple-organ failure. The term capillary leak syndrome has been used to describe this constellation of disease manifestations a

Capillary Leak Syndrome Following Snakebite Envenomation.

Capillary leak syndrome is a unique complication that follows Russell's viper envenomation. This syndrome has a very high fatality rate and is characterized by parotid swelling, chemosis, periorbital edema, hypotension, albuminuria, hypoalbuminemia, and hemoconcentration. This syndrome is frequently recognized from the southern parts of India, especially from the state of Kerala. It has been postulated that a vascular apoptosis inducing component of Russell's viper venom that is not neutralized by the commercially available anti-snake venom (ASV) is responsible for this complication as it occu

A case report of primary cardiac capillary hemangioma.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioma of the heart, presenting as a primary cardiac tumor is extremely rare. METHODS: We present a 20-year-old male with a cardiac tumor which was incidentally discovered during routine clinical examination. RESULTS: Echocardiography showed a large intramyocardial mass attached to the left ventricle, close to the apex. A tumor was shown near the apex of the left ventricle by Cardiac CT. We performed a total resection surgery of the tumor one week after admission and the patient recovered well and discharged from hospital 7 d after surgery. CONCLUSION: The pathological diagn

Metabolite fingerprinting by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry.

Changes in metabolite concentrations in response to specific diseases, treatments, diets, or other factors can be used to understand the complex mechanisms that control and regulate the human body and potentially detect the onset of disease prior to the observation of symptoms in a patient. Different analytical and chemometric platforms are necessary to detect as many metabolites as possible in different biological fluids. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) is a particularly attractive, although still not common, approach for metabolomics for the detection of main

Simulation of capillary bridges between nanoscale particles.

Capillary forces are very important as they exceed in general other adhesion forces. But at the same time the exact calculation of these forces is very complex, so often assumptions and approximations are used. Previous research was done with regard to micrometer sized particles, but the behavior of nanoscale particles is different. Hence, the results for micrometer sized particles cannot be directly transferred when considering nanoscale particles. Therefore, a simulation method was developed to calculate numerically the shape of a rotationally symmetrical capillary bridge between two spheric
