Investigation of Leptospirosis Agents in Cattle and Humans.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis, a global zoonotic disease, causes serious morbidity and mortality generally in low-income societies. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Leptospira serovars in cattle and high-risk human populations. METHODS: This study investigated the presence of pathogenic Leptospira serogroups in the blood and kidney samples of cattle arriving at the Erzurum Meat and Milk Institution for slaughter between April and July, and between September and December 2022, and in the serum samples of humans. Kidney and serum samples from 289 cattle and serum samples from 100 i…

Economics of Twin Pregnancies in Dairy Cattle.

Twinning in Holstein dairy cows has increased over time concurrent with increased milk production. Twinning in dairy cattle is not desirable due to the negative effects on both cows that calve twins and calves born as twins that result in economic losses to dairy farms. Although a twin pregnancy could bring additional income from extra calves and shorten gestation length, twinning compromises milk production, increases the incidence of dystocia and perinatal mortality, decreases calf birth weight, increases the incidence of metabolic diseases, decreases fertility, increases the incidence of fr…

Toxoplasma gondii in cattle in Brazil: a review.

Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan protozoan that is frequently found in both humans and animals worldwide. The aim of this review was to list important aspects of Toxoplasma gondii infection in cattle in Brazil. The frequency of occurrence of T. gondii antibodies in Brazilian cattle ranges from 1 to 89.1%, depending on the region evaluated, based on data from 1978 to 2018. However, some characteristics of T. gondii infection in cattle remain uncertain, such as the role of meat intake in transmitting the parasite to humans. Most information regarding T. gondii infection among Brazilian cattl…

Lipidomic markers of sperm cryotolerance in cattle.

The objective of the current study was to determine the fatty acid composition of sperm from Holstein bulls with different freezability (Good and Poor; n = 12). Fatty acids were extracted from frozen sperm in 1:2 (v/v) chloroform-methanol solvent, fractionated into neutral and polar fractions, and composition determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thirty-four fatty acids were quantified and their concentrations and percentages within each lipid fraction were calculated. Overall, saturated fatty acids (SFA) were predominant, accounting for 71 to 80% of fatty acids in neutral and po

Prediction of the onset of parturition in horses and cattle.

Economic losses due to dystocia or neonatal death as well as animal welfare and ethical concerns demand a reliable prediction of parturition with the aim to improve survival of the dam and her offspring. In this review, estimation of gestational age by ultrasound and prediction of parturition based on clinical signs, behaviour changes and changes in body temperature, composition of mammary gland secretions as well as hormonal changes are discussed in comparison between horses and cattle. Based on the physiological changes associated with the end of gestation and onset of labor, several systems…

Lactoferrin quantification in cattle faeces by ELISA.

PURPOSE: We recently demonstrated that histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors can "reprogram" differentiated triple-negative breast cancer cells to become quiescent stem-like cancer cells. We hypothesized that the metabolic state of such cells differs from that of their differentiated progeny. RESULTS: In untreated cells, glucose uptake was higher in ALDH+ cells than in ALDH- cells (p = 0.01) but lactate production was not different; treating ALDH- or ALDH+ cells with VA or SAHA similarly increased glucose uptake without changing lactate production but upregulated G6PD, a rate-limiting enzyme

Molecular characterization of Blastocystis in cattle in Turkey.

Blastocystis genus exist in a wide variety of hosts, including humans, birds, insects, annelids, amphibians, fish, and mammals. PCR-based molecular diagnostic methods have been successfully used to detect Blastocystis spp. in feces, and small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rRNA) gene-based subtyping is the preferred method for diagnosis. There has been discussion about the subtypes of Blastocystis spp. which has been detected so far. To date, 26 different subtypes have been reported. The aim of this study was to determine the existence and diversity of Blastocystis spp. in cattle. In …

Presence of bovine hepacivirus in Turkish cattle.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV), a worldwide distributed human pathogen, causes one of the most important viral infections in human being. HCV is the type species of the genus Hepacivirus (Flaviviridae) in which recently discovered animal viruses i.e. from horses, bats, rodents and cattle are allocated. After preliminary reports in 2015 from German and African cattle, a wide distribution of bovine hepacivirus (BovHepV, Hepacivirus N) was proposed. We investigated the possible presence of BovHepV in serum samples from cattle in different locations of Turkey. Analyzing a total of 120 samples from 98 fem…

Prediction of calving time in dairy cattle.

This prospective study was carried out to predict the calving time in primiparous (n=11) and multiparous (n=22) Holstein-Friesian cows using the combination of data obtained from the RumiWatch noseband-sensor and 3D-accelerometer. The animals included in the study were fitted with the RumiWatch noseband-sensor and 3D-accelerometer at least 10days before the expected calving day. The calving event was defined as the time of the first appearance of the calves' feet outside the vulva, and this moment was determined by farm staff and/or confirmed by video monitor. As primiparous and multiparous co

Prevalence of cysticercosis in Estonian pigs and cattle.

Taenia solium has been ranked as the most important foodborne parasite and Taenia saginata as the most commonly found human Taenia tapeworm worldwide. The last official reports of taeniosis from Estonia were in 2003 for T. solium and 2012 for T. saginata. By law, all animal cases of cysticercosis must be registered and reported when found. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of cysticercosis in Estonia caused by T. solium in pigs and T. saginata in cattle. The four slaughterhouses participating in the study slaughter between them approximately 80% of pigs and cattle in Estonia annually. Sam…

Seroprevalence of Fasciola hepatica in cattle in Estonia.

Fasciolosis, an infectious disease caused by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, affects grazing cattle world-wide. Liver fluke F. hepatica is prevalent and well-documented in cattle in many European countries, but for the Baltic countries such information is limited. This study investigated the seroprevalence and distribution of F. hepatica in cattle in Estonia. A total of 2461 individual serum samples from 218 farms distributed throughout all 15 Estonian counties, collected between February 2012 and March 2013, were tested for specific anti-F. hepatica antibodies using an in-house enzyme-link…

Ultrasonography of the Tympanic Bullae and Larynx in Cattle.

Diseases of the middle ear or the larynx are not numerous in cattle but their diagnosis can be challenging for veterinary practitioners in the field. This article presents the ultrasonography of these 2 anatomic structures in order to provide new diagnostic tools to veterinary practitioners in the field. Brief anatomic reminders are first reported. The scanning techniques and normal images are then described. Finally, abnormal images of specific conditions are presented.

Ascites in Cattle: Ultrasonographic Findings and Diagnosis.

Ultrasonography enables the examiner to detect very small amounts of fluid in the peritoneal cavity and to determine its location, amount, and sonographic features. The pathologic process responsible for the ascites, for example, ileus, hepatic fibrosis, thrombosis of the caudal vena cava, or traumatic reticuloperitonitis, often can be identified. Abdominocentesis and analysis of the aspirated fluid allow differentiation of inflammatory and noninflammatory ascites as well as the diagnosis of uroperitoneum, hemoperitoneum, chylous ascites, and bile peritonitis.

Validation of Deleterious Mutations in Vorderwald Cattle.

In Montbéliarde cattle two candidate mutations on bovine chromosomes 19 and 29 responsible for embryonic lethality have been detected. Montbéliarde bulls have been introduced into Vorderwald cattle to improve milk and fattening performance. Due to the small population size of Vorderwald cattle and the wide use of a few Montbéliarde bulls through artificial insemination, inbreeding on Montbéliarde bulls in later generations was increasing. Therefore, we genotyped an aborted fetus which was inbred on Montbéliarde as well as Vorderwald x Montbéliarde crossbred bulls for both deleterious mutations…

Vaccination of sheep and cattle against haemonchosis.

Vaccines against gastrointestinal nematodes are one potential option for the control of parasitic gastroenteritis in ruminants. Excretory/secretory (E/S) and hidden antigens are being studied as candidates for vaccines against Haemonchus spp., which is a major parasite in cattle and small ruminants that are raised in warm climates. Protection has been observed after vaccination with some E/S proteases, particularly cysteine proteases and with some glycans that are abundant on the surfaces and in the secretory products of helminths. However, the most promising results are being obtained with gl…

Anthelmintic resistance in cattle nematodes in the US.

The first documented case of macrocyclic lactone resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes of cattle was seen in the US approximately 10 years ago. Since that time the increase incidence of anthelmintic resistance has continued at an alarming rate. Currently parasites of the genera Cooperia and/or Haemonchus resistant to generic or brand-name macrocyclic lactones have be demonstrated in more than half of all operations examined. Both of these parasite genera are capable of causing economic losses by decreasing food intake and subsequently animal productivity. Currently, there are no easy a…

Arthroscopy in cattle: technique and normal anatomy.

Arthroscopy has all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery in cattle. Specialized equipment and knowledge of normal joint anatomy of cattle are mandatory for successful arthroscopy. The surgical technique is different in cattle compared with the horse. Thick skin and joint capsules complicate movement of the arthroscope within the joints. In cattle, septic arthritis and osteochondrosis are the most frequent disorders suitable for arthroscopic treatment.
