[Effect of swinging on EEG of rats of juvenile age in the wakefulness state].

Simultaneous recording of the EEG activity of superficial cortical and deep (caudate nucleus, dorsal hippocampus, anterior hypothalamus) brain parts has been performed for the first time after a 2-h swinging of frequency of 0.2 Hz in Wistar rats of juvenile age. Swinging was produced on a 4-bar parallel swing. Using a Neuron-Spectr electroencephalograph and a Diana program, normalized power spectra of wave EEG components, synchronization coefficients, and coefficients of cross-correlation between bioelectrical potentials of various brain structures were determined. After a 2-h swinging, the me…

Is there a superior occipitofrontal fasciculus? A microsurgical anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Using a fiber-dissection technique, our aim was to expose and study the myelinated fiber bundles of the brain to achieve a clearer conception of their configurations and locations. During the course of our study, the superior occipitofrontal fasciculus became the focus of our interest. Many publications have defined this as a bundle of association fibers, located between the corpus callosum and the caudate nucleus, that connects the frontal and occipital lobes. By examining this area using fiber dissection, we realized that the descriptions of the anatomy are inadequate; thus, we fo…

Cerebrovascular adaptation in chronic hydrocephalus.

This study characterizes the regional changes in vascularity, which accompanies chronic progressive hydrocephalus. Fifteen dogs underwent surgical induction of hydrocephalus and were used for histologic studies. Animals were divided into 4 groups: surgical control, short term (< or = 5 weeks), intermediate term (8 weeks), and long term (10 to 12 weeks). Vessel diameter, density, and luminal area were calculated by imaging quantification after manual vessel identification in the cortical gray, white matter, and caudate nucleus. Capillary vessel diameter decreased 23.5% to 30.2% (P < 0.01) in th…

Effect of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus infection on brain choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase activities.

Mice and rats infected with the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus showed a significant decrease in the choline acetyltransferase activity of caudate nucleus, hypothalamus, midbrain, hippocampus and frontal cortex. Acetylcholinesterase activity was not affected in any of the same brain regions analyzed. In surviving rats no alterations were observed in the activities of choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, and glutamate decarboxylase 3 months after the infection.

[Petit mal status epilepticus with unusual clinical manifestations].

A unique observation of an epileptic female examined in detail in a neurological clinic is presented. The patient was later hospitalized 3 times for disturbances of consciousness and extrapyramid disorders characterized by acute onset. An encephalographic examination carried out during such a state showed an epileptic status of atypic absence. The development of the Parkinsonian syndrome is regarded as a proof of the role of the caudate nucleus in the genesis of the petit mal epileptic status.

The Superior Fronto-Occipital Fasciculus in the Human Brain Revealed by Diffusion Spectrum Imaging Tractography: An Anatomical Reality or a Methodological Artifact?

The existence of the superior fronto-occipital fasciculus (SFOF) in the human brain remains controversial. The aim of the present study was … pact fascicle at the level of the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle coursing above the head of caudate nucleus, medial to the corona radiate and under the corpus callosum (CC), and terminated at the parietal region via the lower part of the caudate nucleus. We consider that this fiber bundle observed by tractography is the SFOF, although it terminates mainly …

Adrenal medulla grafts survive and exhibit catecholamine-specific fluorescence in the primate brain.

Parkinson's disease most consistently involves pathologic changes in the substantia nigra, which is the major source of dopamine to the striatum. It has been shown that either fetal substantia nigra or adrenal medulla tissue implanted into the rat brain survives, produces dopamine, and improves behavioral abnormalities induced by deprivation of the caudate nucleus of its dopaminergic innervation. Thus, catecholamine-containing grafts could be potential replacements for destroyed or damaged dopaminergic neurons in patients with Parkinson's disease. To explore the potential of this therapeutic a…

Microvessel length density, total length, and length per neuron in five subcortical regions in schizophrenia.

Recent studies (Prabakaran et al. in Mol Psychiat 9:684-697, 2004; Hanson and Gottesman in BMC Med Genet 6:7, 2005; Harris et al. in PLoS ONE 3:e3964, 2008) have suggested that microvascular abnormalities occur in the brains of patients with schizophrenia. To assess the integrity of the microvasculature in subcortical brain regions in schizophrenia, we investigated the microvessel length density, total microvessel length, and microvessel length per neuron using design-based stereologic methods in the caudate nucleus, putamen, nucleus accumbens, mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus, and lateral …

Modulation of striatal dopamine dynamics by cocaine self-administration and amphetamine treatment in female rats.

Despite decades of research into the neurobiological basis of cocaine abuse, pharmacotherapeutic treatments for cocaine addiction have been largely ineffective. Converging evidence from preclinical research and from outpatient clinical trials suggest that treatment with amphetamine is efficacious in reducing cocaine intake. Although it has been suggested that amphetamine treatment reduces cocaine intake as an agonist replacement therapy, we have shown recently that multiple aspects of dopamine signaling are altered by cocaine self-administration and returned to pre-cocaine function by amphetam

Iron levels in the human brain: a post-mortem study of anatomical region differences and age-related changes.

The link between brain iron homeostasis and neurodegenerative disease has been the subject of extensive research. There is increasing evidence of iron accumulation during ageing, and altered iron levels in some specific brain regions in neurodegenerative disease patients have been reported. Using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave-assisted acid digestion of the samples, iron levels were determined in 14 different areas of the human brain [frontal cortex, superior and middle temporal, caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus, cingulated gyrus, hippocampus, inferior…
