Cemental tear: An unusual cause for persisting endodontic periodontal lesion.

Cemental tear represents a rare form of root surface fracture which makes teeth prone to periodontal breakdown. The diagnosis of cemental tear becomes a challenge as it is usually neglected or misdiagnosed and is also underreported in the literature. Correct diagnosis and early treatment of cemental tear can prevent further periodontal breakdown and may preserve the affected tooth for a longer duration. This case presents the diagnosis, treatment, and an analysis of a right maxillary lateral incisor with an improper endodontic treatment coupled with a cemental tear. Despite surgical removal, t

Immobilization of hexavalent chromium in cement mortar: leaching properties and microstructures.

Stabilization and solidification (s/s) of heavy metals by cementitious materials are one of the effective methods in hazardous waste management. In cement alkaline environment, Cr(VI) compounds appear in the form of chromate anion (CrO4-2), which is highly soluble; it makes the implication of the s/s method challenging. Therefore, it is important to study the amount of chromium leaching from cementitious materials. The effects of Cr(VI) concentration and water-to-cement (w/c) ratio on the level of leaching of chromium from cement mortar (CM) were investigated in this study. Results indicated w

Cement pulmonary embolism as a complication of percutaneous vertebroplasty in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure commonly performed for vertebral compression fractures secondary to osteoporosis or malignancy. Leakage of bone cement into the paravertebral venous system and cement pulmonary embolism (cPE) are well described, mostly in patients with osteoporosis. Little is known about the clinical sequelae and outcomes in cancer patients. In this study, we report our experience with cPE following vertebroplasty performed in cancer patients. METHODS: Records of all consecutive cancer patients who underwent vertebroplasty at our institution were re

Role of Antibiotic Cement Coated Nailing in Infected Nonunion of Tibia.

INTRODUCTION: Infected nonunion of long bones is a chronic and debilitating disorder. It is more difficult to deal with when the implant used for internal fixation itself becomes a potential media for infection because of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Traditionally, it is managed by two-stage procedure for controlling the infection first and then treating the nonunion. This study has been undertaken to explore antibiotic cement coated nailing as single stage treatment modality for treating infection and achieving stability at the same time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (

Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of calcium silicate-based cements on an osteoblast lineage.

Several calcium silicate-based biomaterials have been developed in recent years, in addition to Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and apoptosis/necrosis in human osteoblast cells (SAOS-2) of pure calcium silicate-based cements (CSC) and modified formulations: modified calcium silicate-based cements (CSCM) and three resin-based calcium silicate cements (CSCR1) (CSCR 2) (CSCR3). The following tests were performed after 24 hours of cement extract exposure: methyl-thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT), apoptosis/necrosis assay and comet as

Osteolytic changes around biodegradable cement restrictors in hip surgery.

Background and purpose - Biodegradable cement restrictors are widely used in hip arthroplasty. Like others, we observed osteolytic reactions associated with a specific cement restrictor (SynPlug; made of PolyActive) and reviewed our patients. Patients and methods - We identified 703 patients with suitable radiographs from our database (2007 to 2012) who underwent cemented hip arthroplasty and received a SynPlug biodegradable cement restrictor. We reviewed all available radiographs to determine the incidence, severity, and progression of osteolysis. Mean postoperative follow-up was 1.8 (1-7) ye

Results of cement augmentation and curettage in aneurysmal bone cyst of spine.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a vascular tumor of the spine. Management of spinal ABC still remains controversial because of its location, vascular nature and incidence of recurrence. In this manuscript, we hereby describe two cases of ABC spine treated by curettage, vertebral cement augmentation for control of bleeding and internal stabilization with two years followup. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature describing the role of cement augmentation in spinal ABC in controlling vascular bleeding in curettage of ABC of spine. Case 1: A 22 year old male p

Patient-reported outcomes in cemented and uncemented total hip replacements.

INTRODUCTION: Data from national registries have favored the use of cemented fixation in total hip replacement (THR) while other reports show no significant differences in implant survival between cemented and uncemented fixation using modern implants. It is important to investigate whether the method of fixation itself may affect patient-reported outcomes. Hence, this study sought to analyse if patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) differ depending on the type of fixation. METHODS: Data was used from the follow-up programme of the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register which comprises the EQ

Preliminary Evidence That Bioactive Cements Occlude Artificial Marginal Gaps.

PURPOSE: The objective of this preliminary laboratory study was to explore whether bioactive dental cements have the ability to seal marginal gaps as compared with other classes of dental cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tooth discs (dentin/enamel) were positioned adjacent to a second disc of one of five possible dental cements (two bioactive and three conventional) and separated by a 50-μm Mylar film, creating a controlled gap between the two discs. The edges of the tooth segments were abraded to expose dentin such that the dentin interface was positioned opposite the cement. The artificial g

Calcium silicate-based cements: composition, properties, and clinical applications.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a calcium silicate-based cement (CSC) commonly used in endodontic procedures involving pulpal regeneration and hard tissue repair, such as pulp capping, pulpotomy, apexogenesis, apexification, perforation repair, and root-end filling. Despite the superior laboratory and clinical performance of MTA in comparison with previous endodontic repair cements, such as Ca(OH)2 , MTA has poor handling properties and a long setting time. New CSC have been commercially launched and marketed to overcome the limitations of MTA. The aim of the present review was to explore
