Numerical variations in human vertebral column: a case report.

Numerical increases in the elements of the vertebral column probably do not occur. In this case, 25 presacral vertebrae (PSV) were determined in the vertebral column of a 22-years-old male skeleton. Their distribution was as follows; 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 1 thoraco-lumbar, 5 lumbar. Sacrum contained 5 vertebrae. In addition, sacralization or lumbarization was not seen.

Destruction mechanism of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in frontal impact.

The aim of this study was to quantitatively study the effect of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) on the risk of spinal injury under frontal impact. A head-neck finite element model incorporating active neck muscles and soft tissues was developed and validated. Based on the intact head-neck model, three ACDF models (single-level, two-level and three-level) were used to analyze the frontal impact responses of the head-neck. The results revealed that various surgical approaches led to distinct patterns of vertebral damage under frontal impact. For single-level and three-level ACDFs,

Asymptomatic retropharyngeal abscess related to cervical Pott's disease.

Pott's disease is an uncommon manifestation of tuberculosis, which usually involves thoracic or lumbar vertebrae. The body of the vertebrae is most severely affected and a compression fracture is an almost inevitable consequence of the disease. A paravertabral abscess generally accompanies vertebral involvement. Tenderness over the involved vertebrae, weakness of the related muscles, and paraesthesia are the usual symptoms. In this article, we report a case of cervical Pott's disease presenting mainly with neurologic symptoms such as weakness, pain, numbness of both arms and hands, and an asym

Anterior osteophyte discrimination in lumbar vertebrae using size-invariant features.

Radiologists often examine X-rays of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae for determining the presence of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. For individual vertebra assessment, the boundary increasingly digresses from the general rectangular shape as the vertebra becomes less normal in appearance. For an abnormal vertebra, bony growths ('osteophytes') may appear at the vertebral comers, resulting in a change in the vertebra's shape. Image processing techniques are presented for computing size-invariant, convex hull-based features to highlight anterior osteophytes. Feature evaluation of 714 lu

Multiple Cervical Vertebral Malformations in a 21-Week-Old Kitten.

A 21 wk old, 2 kg neutered male domestic shorthair presented with a 24 hr history of acute-onset severe nonambulatory tetraparesis with no known inciting cause. Neurologic examination revealed a C1-C5 myelopathy. Computed tomography of the vertebral column and thorax revealed incomplete ossification of the C2 and C3 vertebrae and lung bullae. After 4 wk of conservative management, the client reported a return to normal ambulation with reluctance to jump up. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a feline case of incomplete ossification of cervical vertebrae. The cervical malfor…

Malignant external otitis: now a medical problem.

A 75-yr-old diabetic woman presented with right ear tenderness and neck pain. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured during surgery from an inflammatory area in the region of the cervical vertebrae. A diagnosis of malignant external otitis was made and parenteral antibiotics were given, which produced a cure. This disease has a high mortality rate, which accounts for the use of the word malignant. Our patient also manifested the jugular foramen syndrome involving multiple cranial nerves. If there is cranial nerve involvement, which is seen in at least one-half of cases, the mortality ranges as hi…

[Measurement and clinical significance of cervical lordosis].

Measurement of cervical lordosis is the basic method for evaluating cervical function, and important reference for determine treatment decision. However, how to choose appropriate measurement in accordance with different situation, as well as the relationship among these methods is not clear. An increasing number of studies suggested that different measurements could directly affect the judgment of cervical lordosis. Therefore, comparative study of cervical vertebrae plays an important role in clinical treatment for cervical spondylosis under different cervical curvature conditions.

Surgical Management Of Irreducible Atlanto-Axial Dislocation With OS Odontoideum And Klippel-Feil Syndrome.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is the congenital fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae which is often associated with various other abnormalities in the cervical spine. Involvement the upper cervical segments leads to atlanto-axial instability which manifests as progressive neurological symptoms due to compression on the spinal cord. These cases pose a surgical challenge due the abnormal and unique anatomy of each patient. A 37-year-old patient presented with neck pain and cervical myelopathy due to a posterior subluxation of C2-3 fused segment over C4-6 fused segment. The patient had an os od…

Iniencephaly.

BACKGROUND: Iniencephaly is a severe developmental abnormality of the craniovertebral junction in which the head is retroflexed dramatically. Anatomic studies have identified striking changes in the vertebrae and skull: marked lordosis of the cervical vertebrae, duplicated cervical vertebrae, irregularly fused cervical vertebrae, a widened foramen magnum and a small posterior fossa. The affected infant appears to have no neck, as the skin of the face is continuous with the chest and the skin of the posterior scalp is continuous with the skin of the back. Iniencephaly is considered a rare neura…
