The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) has designated Rice and Napa cabbage, which account for a large proportion of the Korean diet, as staple foods for continuous radioactivity monitoring. Assessing internal exposure from food ingestion is essential for public health and radiation safety. Soil may contain certain concentrations of the natural radionuclide 40K as well as the artificial radionuclide 137Cs, which can accumulate in the edible parts of plants. This can lead to an exceedance of the ingestion dose. In this study, measurements of 40K and 137Cs were conducted for 144 food samples (including fruit, tea, cereals, beans, salt, and sugar) using gamma spectrometry. Following the Goiânia radiation accident, lymphocytes from 110 exposed or potentially exposed individuals were analyzed for the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (dicentrics and centric rings) to estimate absorbed radiation dose. We investigated the sensitivity of the Ca2(+)-dependent K+ current, IK(Ca), present in corn protoplasts, to different K+ channel blockers. PURPOSE: This study examined the internal Cs exposure of residents and the Cs present in food products produced in Namie. Whole-body counter (WBC) was used for the measurement of internal exposure per each whole body of examinees.
METHODS: The food products which appeared to be used for consumption, were brought by residents and commercially available food items were excluded. Most of them were wild plants or food items produced by residents. Four years of data from April 2012 to March 2013 (fiscal 2012) and April 2015 to March 2016 (Fiscal 2015) were analyzed and studied.
