The molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium species in relinquished dogs in Great Britain: a novel zoonotic risk?

Surveillance was conducted to investigate the occurrence of protozoan parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium in dogs newly admitted to a dog rehoming charity in London, Great Britain. Voided faecal samples were collected from all new admissions between 2011 and 2012 during six separate 4-week sampling periods. Information on host signalment, including age, breed and reason for submission and faecal consistency, was collected. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) targeting the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, confirmed by sequencing, was conducted on the faecal samples to detect Cryptosporidium genomic DNA a

Exploring the health risks of help-seeking military veterans living in different parts of the UK.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the mental and physical health differences of treatment-seeking military veterans across the different nations that make up the UK. The aim of this research was to explore potential health differences in order to support better service planning. METHODS: A random cross-sectional sample of treatment-seeking veterans residing in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland was identified from a national mental health charity. 403 veterans completed a questionnaire highlighting their demographics, mental health and physical health difficulties. The data were an

Scalable, sustainable cost-effective surgical care: a model for safety and quality in the developing world, part I: challenge and commitment.

BACKGROUND: With an estimated backlog of 4,000,000 patients worldwide, cleft lip and cleft palate remain a stark example of the global burden of surgical disease. The need for a new paradigm in global surgery has been increasingly recognized by governments, funding agencies, and professionals to exponentially expand care while emphasizing safety and quality. This three-part article examines the evolution of the Operation Smile Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Center (GCCCC) as an innovative model for sustainable cleft care in the developing world. METHODS: The GCCCC is the result of a unique

Retrospective Quarterly Cohort Monitoring for patients with Visceral Leishmaniasis in the Indian subcontinent: outcomes of a pilot project.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a new tool for the monitoring of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) treatment outcomes in primary healthcare (PHC) settings, adapted from the standardised Retrospective Quarterly Cohort Monitoring done in tuberculosis control. METHODS: We developed standard case definitions for early and late VL treatment outcomes, a single register allowing for one-line entry per patient as registration tool, and quarterly reporting formats for the clinical outcomes. We pilot-tested these tools in three Indian Primary Health Centres and two Nepalese district hospitals, as well as in a charity

Impact of the treatment-free interval on health-related quality of life in patients with multiple myeloma: a UK cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: While the impact of various treatments on myeloma patients' health-related quality of life (HRQL) has been reported, the impact of a treatment-free interval (TFI) is currently unclear. The aims of this study were to assess if (1) a TFI is associated with a better HRQL vs. other treatment phases and (2) the length of the TFI influences HRQL. METHODS: A cross-sectional postal survey was conducted in the UK. The survey was sent to 605 multiple myeloma patients via the charity Myeloma UK and asked patients to rate their HRQL using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment o

Blood donors' helping behavior is driven by warm glow: more evidence for the blood donor benevolence hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The benevolence hypothesis (both donor and recipient gain) suggests that blood donors, compared to non-blood donors have a general altruistic motivational preference based on warm glow (i.e., "I donate because it makes me feel good"). With objective behavioral economics tests of altruism and warm-glow giving, this paper offers the first direct experimental test of this hypothesis. The prediction that blood donors will be motivated in general by warm glow was compared to predictions from other theoretical models: strong reciprocity and empathy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Four experi

Hyperlipemia in a population of aged donkeys: description, prevalence, and potential risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Hyperlipemia is a common disorder of the donkey, with mortality rates of up to 80% reported. Such a poor prognosis makes prevention of this disorder or amelioration in the early stages crucial. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe and determine the prevalence of hyperlipemia in a population of donkeys and to determine risk factors for development of the disease. ANIMALS: A total of 449 cases were investigated from a population of 3829 donkeys; donkeys were resident at The Donkey Sanctuary, a charity providing refuge for unwanted donkeys in the UK. Animals were

The Montreal Heart Institute: the idea and the man behind it.

The Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) opened on January 11, 1954. It was the work of a single individual, a young cardiologist with a vision. Paul David (1919-1999) trained in the late 1940s -- first, in Boston with Paul Dudley White and, second, in Paris with Jean Lenègre, two of the well-known cardiologists of the times. In the early 1950s, the only heart institute in the world was the one that Ignacio Chavez had founded in Mexico in 1944. Montreal had a medical institute of its own, the Montreal Neurological Institute, which Wilder Penfield had established in 1934. David probably got his inspi

Samuel Theobald M.D. Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital before the Wilmer Institute 1889-1925.

Although ophthalmology today at the Johns Hopkins Hospital is synonymous with the name of Wilmer, it should be remembered that the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute was not founded until 1925. Thus, to appreciate fully the ophthalmic heritage of Johns Hopkins we must look back to the beginnings of the medical institutions. When the Johns Hopkins Hospital opened in 1889 and the medical school followed in 1893, Samuel Theobald, M.D., was appointed ophthalmic and aural surgeon, and later clinical professor of ophthalmology and otology. Dr. Theobald, a native Baltimorean, was a member of the prest

Campylobacter pylori-associated gastritis and immune response in a population at increased risk of gastric carcinoma.

A series of 169 consecutive patients from low socioeconomic strata attending the gastroenterology clinic of Charity Hospital in New Orleans were evaluated clinically and endoscopically. This general New Orleans population is known to be at increased risk of developing gastric carcinoma. The type of gastritis was identified histologically, and the presence of Campylobacter pylori was determined by culture and/or histology. The overall prevalence of C. pylori infection in this patient population was 71% (126/169). These findings were correlated with serum IgG antibody to C. pylori using an ELISA

Management of airway trauma. I: Tracheobronchial injuries.

One hundred six consecutive patients with injuries to the tracheobronchial tree who were admitted to the emergency room of the Tulane Medical Center Hospital or the Charity Hospital of Louisiana at New Orleans over a period of almost 20 years were analyzed retrospectively. Penetrating trauma of the neck or chest was reported in 100 of the patients, and only 6 had blunt trauma to the neck or thorax as the cause of injury. There were 18 deaths among the 106 patients (16.98%), including 11 (13.75%) of 80 with injuries of the cervical trachea. Seven (53.8%) of 13 with principal injuries of the tho

Percutaneous vesicoamniotic shunting versus conservative management for fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (PLUTO): a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is associated with high perinatal and long-term childhood mortality and morbidity. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of vesicoamniotic shunting for treatment of LUTO. METHODS: In a randomised trial in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands, women whose pregnancies with a male fetus were complicated by isolated LUTO were randomly assigned by a central telephone and web-based randomisation service to receive either the intervention (placement of vesicoamniotic shunt) or conservative management. Allocation could not be masked from clinici

Preconception and early pregnancy maternal haemodynamic changes in healthy women in relation to pregnancy viability.

STUDY QUESTION: Are there differences in preconception cardiovascular function between women who have a viable pregnancy and those who have a first trimester miscarriage? SUMMARY ANSWER: Preconception cardiovascular function of central haemodynamics and arterial function are similar between women who have a viable pregnancy and those who have a first trimester miscarriage. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Miscarriages have been associated with increased long-term cardiovascular disease risk, and arterial and cardiovascular dysfunction has been hypothesised as the common link. It is not known if these

A Cross-Sectional Study of Patient Views on Acceptability of Olfactory Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike other chronic conditions, effective therapies for smell and taste disorders (SATDs) remain scarce. Olfactory implants are an emerging area of therapy aimed at restoring the sense of smell through electrical stimulation of the olfactory pathway. This survey aimed to assess patient opinions and the acceptability of olfactory implants, including willingness to undergo surgery, as well as factors influencing their decision-making process. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional survey consisting of two online questionnaires circulated via the charity SmellTaste, explorin

Amplified stigma: a conceptual synthesis of embodied intersections of menstruation and homelessness in Western urban contexts.

Menstruation and homelessness are each highly stigmatised experiences, yet their intersection remains critically understudied. This paper introduces the concept of amplified stigma to describe the compounded psychosocial, material and structural harms faced by individuals who menstruate without stable housing in high-income Western cities. Drawing from a conceptual synthesis of over 70 interdisciplinary sources, including public health, feminist theory, medical sociology, anthropology and gender studies, we employ three core analytical frameworks: embodiment, objectification and intersectional

"Beggars can't be choosers": Exploring service users' perspectives on charitable meal services while experiencing homelessness.

Charitable meal services are an essential source of nourishment for many people experiencing homelessness (PEH), yet little research has examined how everyday organizational practices shape experiences of power, dignity, and participation within these settings. Guided by the work of Paulo Freire, this critical ethnography explored how power is enacted and experienced within charitable meal services for PEH in two mid-sized Canadian cities. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted between September 2023 and April 2024. Participants described c

Telemedicine-Supported Hybrid Primary Care in Rural Areas with Healthcare Workforce Shortages: A Qualitative Study from the Heves District, Hungary.

Background/Objectives: Primary healthcare in Hungary faces acute physician shortages; in the Heves district, eight general practices are permanently vacant, leaving 11,191 residents without continuous care. In September 2025, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta launched the Heves Haziorvosi Pilot (HHP), combining on-site nurse triage with remote telemedicine consultations. This study qualitatively evaluated its implementation and early operation. Methods: Three focus group discussions were held in two rounds, before and after implementation, with all 19 professionals delivering
