Febrile convulsions--what do parents do?

To find out about the medical and parental management of children having their first febrile convulsion a hospital-based questionnaire study was carried out in which parents were asked what they did at the time. Fifty-four out of 89 parents brought their child directly to hospital while the remainder attempted to contact their general practitioner, usually successfully, and were then referred to hospital. Whichever course of action the parents chose the outcome was satisfactory. Eighty-seven per cent of convulsions lasted for less than 15 minutes and in only two instances did they last longer

Is intrauterine growth retardation a risk factor for child abuse?

A case-control study was conducted to determine whether infants with intrauterine growth retardation are at an increased risk of child abuse. Case children were those who had been born at Yale-New Haven Hospital and were reported to the hospital's child abuse committee because they had been physically abused. For each case, one control child was chosen from the hospital's log of births and matched to the case child by age, gender, race of the mother, method of payment for the hospitalization, and the provider of the child's health care at the time of birth. Infants were defined as having intra

Transition experiences between hospital- and home-care for parents of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

PURPOSE: Children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) experience numerous vulnerabilities during transitions from hospital to home during their first year of life. This paper examines the parents' responses to the situations they experience during the initial interstage transition as described through illness blogs. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design through inductive theme development using thematic analysis was performed for this study. Text data were used from publically available blogs written by parents of HLHS children on their feelings and experiences during t

[A case of heterotopic ossification in the parapharyngeal region connected with the C2 vertebra in a 9-year-old girl].

A rare case of extraskeletal ossification in the parapharyngeal region related to C2 cervical vertebra was observed in a child, without any history of trauma, inflammation or endocrinological disease. One-step surgical intervention was carried out from the side of the neck and pharynx making possible complete removal of the lesion. The girl was admitted to the hospital with dysphagia and breathing difficulties increasing in the last 6 months. During that time the child was observed in laryngological hospital departments. After the operation Horner syndrome and hypoglossal paresis developed, bu

Things We Do for No Reason™: Reporting every child who ingests tetrahydrocannabinol to child protective services.

Legalization of recreational tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) containing products has led to increased hospital visits for accidental ingestions. In response, some hospitals require that care teams report all such ingestions to child protective services (CPS). Yet, ingestions of other household products, like cleaners with more capacity to harm children than THC, do not automatically trigger reporting. CPS investigations can cause harm. Instead of automatic reporting, hospitalists should consider whether the child's caregiver took reasonable steps to prevent unintentional ingestion and recognizes th

You don't leave your baby--mother's experiences after a stillbirth.

When a baby has died during pregnancy, the first encounter between mother and child occurs when the baby is already dead. Despair, emptiness, and grief characterize the encounter, which is also a gradual farewell to the child and the planned future for the family. This study describes mothers' experiences of the farewell of their stillborn baby at discharge from hospital. Twenty-three mothers from different parts of Sweden, who suffered stillbirth, were interviewed. Semi-structured questions were used and the replies were analyzed using content analysis. The mothers describe the separation fro

The foundations of autism: the law concerning psychotic, schizophrenic, and autistic children in 1950s and 1960s britain.

While the origins of child psychiatry in Britain can be traced to the interwar period, contemporary concepts and methodological approaches to pathological mental development in children were not created until the 1950s and 1960s. It was at this time that one of the most salient and lasting diagnoses in child psychiatry, autism, was established through a network of intellectual, institutional, and legal changes in Britain. This article argues that the work of child psychiatrists at the Maudsley Hospital was central in driving these changes and uses archival sources from this hospital, along wit

Child Maltreatment During COVID-19: Triangulating Data Across Reporting Sources.

The COVID-19 pandemic created enormous challenges for families across the United States. Economic concerns related to job loss and unemployment, social isolation and school closures were just some of the stressors facing families and children. Because many of these factors are known correlates of child abuse and neglect, some were concerned that child abuse and neglect would significantly increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. A rigorous and comprehensive systematic review of scientific literature was conducted to triangulate hospital, child welfare, and self-report data on child maltreatment

[Practical approach to a suspicion of child sexual abuse].

Child sexual abuse is very common. Whether it is a spontaneous revelation, a sign or an evocative symptom, the suspicion of sexual assault on a child requires the doctor to act, regardless of his specialty or mode of exercise. After the interview, the doctor carries out a general somatic examination and writes an initial descriptive medical certificate. Whatever the situation, it is advisable to send the child to hospital for immediate management -gynecological and anal examination, additional examinations, medication prescriptions-. He must explain to the parents the obligatory nature of the

Identification during the postpartum period of infants who are at high risk of child maltreatment.

To determine whether clinicians correctly identify newborn infants who are at high risk of child maltreatment, we examined the outcomes of high-risk and non-high-risk children. Infants who were born at Yale-New Haven Hospital from 1979 to 1981 and who were referred by clinicians during the postpartum period to the hospital's child abuse registry because they were considered at high risk of child abuse or neglect became the high-risk group. For each high-risk infant, a comparison infant was selected and matched according to date of birth, gender, race, and method of payment for the hospitalizat
