The purpose of this study was to know the vaccination coverage in children under 16 years of age in our health care area, as well as the level of knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, vias of information and other factors that could influence the state of child vaccination. A transverse study by interviewing parents was made. Children were distributed into three groups: A (0 to 4 years of age), B (5 to 9 years of age) and C (10 to 16 years of age). Our results showed a correct global vaccination coverage rate of 58.4%. The correct vaccination coverage rate 94.5% in group A, 74.7% in group B and 30.8%

A community survey on maternal and child health services utilization in rural Ethiopia.

A household health interview survey on MCH services utilization was carried out in 22 villages of a rural district of Arsi region, Ethiopia, before the launching of an integrated MCH programme. Coverage of antenatal services was 26%, and 61% of the women who received antenatal care reported having had 3 or more visits. Antenatal care was positively associated with living within 10 km of the Health Centre. Twenty-eight percent of the mothers attended the under-5 clinic and most returned for 3 or more visits. In addition, 99% reported having breast-fed their last child but more than 25% started

The determinants of use of maternal and child health services in Metro Cebu, the Philippines.

The determinants of the use of family planning, prenatal care, childhood immunizations and oral rehydration salts (ORS) were studied with survey data of 8000 women in Metro Cebu, the Philippines. Polytomous logistic regression methods were used. The level of maternal education was the most consistent and important determinant of use of these four health services in both urban and rural areas. For example, the estimated odds of using modern contraception increased by six and eleven per cent for each additional year of schooling in urban and rural strata respectively. Economic status and access

Screening for congenital dislocation of the hip by child-health nurses in Western Australia.

The child-health nurse screening programme for the presence of congenital dislocation of the hip in Western Australia was evaluated by the use of data that were collected as a routine from the Congenital Malformations Registry, the records of child-health nurses and the Hospital Morbidity System. The programme performed well operationally, with a sensitivity of 68.5%, a specificity of 98.8%, and a positive predictive value of 15.1%. Of the children who were born in the study period (1981-1983), 450 children were diagnosed with congenital dislocation of the hip, and 46 (10.2%) of these children

Paternal perinatal mental health and early child development: An outcome-wide analysis.

Paternal mental health (PMH) has been shown to associate with child development as early as infancy. However, the moderating effects of certain contextual factors remain poorly understood. Using data from the French SEPAGES cohort, an outcome-wide analytic approach was used to investigate the relationship between PMH during pregnancy (n = 166), 0-12 months postnatally (n = 117), and 12-24 months postnatally (n = 207) with child socioemotional, behavioral and cognitive outcomes at two and three years. Mother's mental health, child sex and parent's professional class were then tested as potentia

Environmental influences on child health outcomes: cohorts of individuals born very preterm.

The National Institutes of Health's Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program was designed to address solution-oriented research questions about the links between children's early life environment and their risks of pre-, peri-, and post-natal complications, asthma, obesity, neurodevelopmental disorders, and positive health. Children born very preterm are at increased risk for many of the outcomes on which ECHO focuses, but the contributions of environmental factors to this risk are not well characterized. Three ECHO cohorts consist almost exclusively of individuals born…

Rating early child development outcome measurement tools for routine health programme use.

BACKGROUND: Identification of children at risk of developmental delay and/or impairment requires valid measurement of early child development (ECD). We systematically assess ECD measurement tools for accuracy and feasibility for use in routine services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: Building on World Bank and peer-reviewed literature reviews, we identified available ECD measurement tools for children aged 0-3 years used in ≥1 LMIC and matrixed these according to when (child age) and what (ECD domains) they measure at population or individual level. Tools measuring

Maternal Childhood Maltreatment History and Child Mental Health: Mechanisms in Intergenerational Effects.

The objectives of this study were to examine whether a maternal history of maltreatment in childhood has a detrimental impact on young children's mental health and to test theoretically and empirically informed pathways by which maternal history may influence child mental health. Mother-child dyads (N = 187) were evaluated between birth and 64 months of age via home and laboratory observations, medical and child protection record reviews, and maternal interviews to assess maternal history of childhood maltreatment and microsystem and exosystem measures of the caregiving context, including chil

Somalia: supporting the child survival agenda when routine health service is broken.

Somalia, one of the most unstable countries in the world, has been without a permanent government for nearly 2 decades. With a health system in total disarray, coverage of basic health interventions remains low and, maternal and child mortality is among the highest in the world. Health partners jointly outlined an integrated package of critical child survival interventions to be delivered through a population-based delivery strategy known as Child Health Days (CHDs), to reduce child mortality. Using this strategy, key child survival interventions are delivered to the community with an objectiv…

Improving child and family health through primary prevention of neural tube defects.

The neural tube defect, myelomeningocele, is the most complex congenital anomaly that is compatible with normal life, if appropriately treated. Knowledge of evidence-based primary prevention strategies for neural tube defects prevents the greatest number of these conditions from occurring. Primary prevention is key to family health. Only through primary prevention can the following be avoided: (a) the potential emotional trauma brought about by prenatal diagnosis of an affected fetus; (b) the associated decision-making about secondary prevention via selective termination; (c) the physical and

Personal child health record and advice booklet programme in Tuzla, Bosnia Herzegovina.

Personal child health records, held by the parents, have potential advantages in times of civil disorder. Via health and community workers, 939 booklets (incorporating health records and health advice) were distributed to displaced and other families near Tuzla. Subsequently mothers were invited to bring their children for examination. Five hundred and seventy-one children with their booklets returned to the clinics. The survey revealed high rates of dental caries (305 cases), anaemia (36), and scabies (20). The war had not affected the duration of breast feeding, and the children's nutrition …

Two years of admissions to Natal's first inpatient child mental health centre.

The need for increased provision of mental health services for children has long been expressed. Equally, there is a shortage of training opportunities for mental health workers in this specialised field. The establishment of the first inpatient child mental health centre in Natal, together with clinical and demographic characteristics of the first 100 patients admitted to the unit, is discussed. Almost one-third of the children were diagnosed as having disruptive behaviour disorders, including conduct disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Postnatal maternal mental health-related hospitalisation and its association with adverse child health and maltreatment outcomes: narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health conditions within the postnatal period can have long-lasting consequences on a child's well-being. This study synthesises current evidence on the association between postnatal maternal mental health-related hospitalisation (MHrH) and adverse child health and maltreatment outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an inclusive search across multiple databases, including MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and the reference list of eligible papers. Studies that used standardised outcome measures were included. Study selection and data extraction we…
