Molar degeneration of the trophoblast is a rare, yet possible, complication of pregnancies. Complete hydatidiform mole is the most common histological type among all trophoblastic tumors and it is the result of the fertilization of an empty oocyte from two sperms or by one sperm that then duplicates. Complete mole is characterized by hydropic degeneration of abnormal chorionic villi, diffused trophoblast hyperplasia and the absence of identifiable embryonic or fetal tissue; the hyperplastic trophoblast justifies the common finding of high serum beta HCG levels. Twin molar pregnancy is an uncom

RATIONALE: Rectal ectopic pregnancy is an extremely rare abdominal pregnancy. This article presents a female underwent an unsuccessful in vitro fertilization which was misdiagnosed by serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) test and transvaginal ultrasonography. Twenty days later, a ruptured rectal ectopic pregnancy was confirmed by laparoscopy then the gestational tissue removed successfully.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old Chinese female was admitted to our hospital with complaining of symptoms, like gradual worsening of lower abdominal pain and dysuria. The abdominal ultrasonograph

A retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy is an extremely rare type of ectopic pregnancy and is difficult to diagnose and treat. Owing to its occult onset, it is life-threatening and often associated with high mortality. A 28-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department of our hospital owing to soreness of the left lower quadrant of the abdomen and amenorrhea for 60 days. Dilatation and curettage were performed at a local hospital to induce abortion, but no gestational sac was found. Elevated plasma human chorionic gonadotropin levels suggested an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound showed a

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pregnancy outcomes of patients with low serum β-hCG level 14 days after day 3 embryo transfer.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed with 723 patients with a serum β-hCG level between 5 and 100 mIU/ml 14 days after embryo transfer. Pregnancy outcomes (live birth, clinical pregnancy) were analyzed according to the female patients' age. ROC curves were plotted to indicate the threshold for prediction of clinical pregnancy and live birth.
RESULTS: Of the 723 patients with serum β-hCG level <100 mIU/mL, 85.6% (619) had biochemical pregnancy, and only 14.4% (1

Acute lower abdominal pain or pelvic pain is a common presenting complaint in women of reproductive age, which can be accounted for by numerous aetiologies. The presentation of lower abdominal pain with associated findings of an adnexal mass on transvaginal ultrasonography and positive beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) (serum and urine) in a sexually active woman of reproductive age is an ectopic pregnancy until proven otherwise. Here, we present a classic case suggestive of an unruptured ectopic pregnancy, with an unexpected finding of a unilateral dermoid cyst intraoperatively in a 3

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the time required for complete physical resolution of tubal ectopic pregnancies diagnosed on ultrasound imaging in women undergoing successful expectant management?
DESIGN: A prospective observational cohort study of 177 women who had successful expectant management of tubal ectopic pregnancy, who attended a single Early Pregnancy Unit between January 2014 and December 2018. All participants were monitored until their serum beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta-HCG) dropped to non-pregnant concentrations and with 2-weekly follow-up ultrasound scans until resoluti

A 41-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 1) underwent elective termination of pregnancy at approximately 7 weeks of gestation. At 1 month after the elective abortion, she was referred due to abnormal results in a cervical cytological examination. Transvaginal ultrasonography showed a heterogeneous mass of 16 mm in diameter in the left adnexal region. At 3 months after her referral, the asymptomatic left adnexal mass had increased to 55 mm in diameter. Prominent vascular flow was detected in the solid portion by color Doppler ultrasonography. Magnetic resonance imaging showed suspected hemorrhage i

BACKGROUND: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) occurs in 1% of pregnancies and is reported to be more common in in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) pregnancies. An abdominal ectopic pregnancy (AEP) is a rare form of EP, and there are few reports of an AEP after IVF/ICSI. In this case report, a rare case of AEP after frozen-thawed cycle of ICSI is presented.
CASE PRESENTATION: After a frozen-thawed cycle of ICSI, the beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) level at 4 weeks 0 days of gestation was 3.4 IU/L. Subsequent dysfunctional uterine bleeding was mistaken for menstruati

INTRODUCTION: Most secondary abdominal pregnancies happen after spontaneous abortion of tubal pregnancy or ruptured intrauterine pregnancy. However, we presented a case of ruptured secondary abdominal pregnancy after primary laparoscopic treatment of tubal pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: The ectopic pregnant lesion in the affected tube was thoroughly removed in the primary laparoscopy, and nothing abnormal was detected in abdomen or pelvis. Beta human chorionic gonadotropin levels dropped significantly after surgery, but the patient came back again for severe abdominal pain with beta human chorionic

INTRODUCTION: A broad ligament pregnancy is an extremely rare condition and diagnosis is frequently missed and finally made during laparotomy. This is a case of a young patient with high serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) levels after operation because of broad ligament pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: A 31-year-old multipara complained of intermittent lower abdominal pain with vaginal bleeding for four months. A color ultrasonography revealed a cystic mass in the left attachment area, indicating an interstitial tubal pregnancy. However, trophoblastic disease could not be excluded. She ac

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of conventional laparoscopic surgery and laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) in the surgical treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 156 patients were diagnosed with ectopic pregnancies by ultrasonography and serum β-human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) levels at Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital from January 2009 through December 2013. We excluded 28 patients who only received medical treatment, 15 patients who underwent surgery by laparotomy for severe hypovolemic shock, an

BACKGROUND: The initial diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy depends on physical examination, ultrasound, and serial measurements of total β-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCGβ) concentrations in serum. The aim of this study was to explore the possibility of using quantitative analysis of total hCGβ in urine rather than in serum by immunomagnetic reduction (IMR) assay as an alternative method to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy.
METHODS: We established a standard calibration curve of IMR intensity against total hCGβ concentration based on standard hCGβ samples, and used an IMR assay to detec

BACKGROUND: Rupture of a fallopian tube caused by ectopic pregnancy may have serious consequences including hemorrhagic shock. The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is based on the demonstration of pregnancy using serum beta-hCG assays. Thus, a negative test usually allows the exclusion of the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.
CASE: We present an unusual case of ectopic pregnancy resulting in hemorrhagic shock despite negative results for serum beta-hCG tests. Computed tomography and ultrasound scans revealed hemoperitoneum and a right adnexal mass. Medical management and laparoscopic salpingectom

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to develop a physical model of the behavior of beta-hCG following the complete evacuation of a hydatidiform mole. Because hCG is an excellent marker for continued trophoblastic activity, the model can be used for early detection of persistent sites.
METHOD: The model was developed from analysis of the post surgical hCG decrease in a patient with Stage III gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. As found in previous molar pregnancy studies, hCG follows a log-linear decrease after resolution. In contrast to those studies, however, we assume that the decre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses various aspects of the management of women with pregnancies of unknown location.
RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of pregnancies of unknown location is dependent on the quality of scanning for a given early-pregnancy unit. The higher the quality of scanning, the better the detection of ectopic pregnancy using ultrasound as a single diagnostic test, which in turn results in fewer women being classified with a pregnancy of unknown location. Varying the discriminatory zone does not significantly improve the detection of ectopic pregnancies in a pregnancy o

BACKGROUND: Primary ovarian pregnancy is a relatively rare form of ectopic pregnancy with an incidence of 1/6000 - 1/40000 pregnancies.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old woman, gravida 1, parity 0, presented with vaginal bleeding after 8 weeks of amenorrhea. Pelvic examination revealed a left adnexal mass and transvaginal ultrasound confirmed a left adnexal echocomplex mass with free fluid in the cul-de-sac. Serum beta hCG was 3441 mIU/mL. Emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed with a preoperative diagnosis of left ectopic pregnancy, suspected of ovarian pregnancy. Ruptured left ovarian preg
