Religious and Spiritual Practices as Complementary Support for Biomedical Care Among Christian and Muslim Filipino Adults.

Religion and spirituality may shape how patients interpret illness and engage with treatment, yet limited comparative research has examined these processes among Christian and Muslim Filipino adults. This qualitative study explored how religious and spiritual practices supported participants receiving biomedical care. Sixty adults aged 35 years and older, comprising 30 Christians and 30 Muslims from Rizal Province, Philippines, participated from January to May 2026. Data were gathered through 45 face-to-face semi-structured interviews and 15 written qualitative responses submitted through Goog

Exploring How Christian Women with Sexual Pain and Difficulty Make Sense of Sexual Functioning in Marriage.

Female sexual difficulties such as pain and dysfunction occur within a complex biopsychosocial ecosystem that evolves across the lifespan. This qualitative study explored how a large sample of Christian women (N = 629) who have experienced sexual difficulties in marriage construct meaning around key dimensions of their sexual functioning, including sexual satisfaction and desire. Reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses revealed the multifactorial attributions Christian women make when accounting for stability and change in their sexual functioning over time. Findings indicat

Ethnobotany in Angola: The contribution of late 19th century christian missionaries to the knowledge of medicinal wild plants.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Angola has an extraordinary plant diversity and a great ethnobotanical potential. However, there is a general lack of information about the first botanical explorations in the country and their contribution to the knowledge of the medicinal flora. AIM OF THE STUDY: The main aim of this study was to unveil the ethnobotanical legacy of José Maria Antunes and Eugène Dekindt, priests of the first Catholic mission in Huíla (Angola) and shed light on their contribution to the knowledge of medicinal wild plants of the country, including information on the uses, plant

Awaking to Mutual, Reciprocal Need in Plague and Epidemic Disease: The Origins of Early Christian Health Care.

While the early Christian Church demonstrates a deep desire to relieve physical suffering, the Greco-Roman world in which it developed lacked the same impetus to respond to human need, especially in the context of epidemic or communicable disease. Christianity's dedication to health care, and its belief that assisting the sick constituted an absolute obligation, distinguished early Christianity from its contemporary cultural milieu which regularly ignored and excluded the sick. The novelty of the Christian approach to healing can be traced to the early church's unique recognition of human need…

Ontogenetic changes in intralimb proportions in a Romano-Christian period sample from the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to document the appearance of adult patterns in intralimb indices during ontogeny in a skeletal sample from the Kellis 2 cemetery, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. In addition, this study explores evolvability in intralimb indices to understand relative differences in sensitivity to ecogeographic variables. METHODS: Brachial and crural indices were compared across age cohorts with Welch's ANOVA tests and post-hoc Dunnett-Tukey-Kramer (DTK) pairwise multiple comparison tests. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were used to examine developmental conservation

Ocular Inflammation: Can It Be a Sign of Activity of Weber-Christian Disease? A Case Report and Review of Literature.

PURPOSE: To present a case of Weber-Christian disease with symptomatic ocular involvment. Weber-Christian disease is a relapsing febrile nodular nonsuppurative panniculitis. It is characterized by malaise and fever accompanied by subcutaneous inflammatory nodules on the trunk and extremities. It can affect several organs, but ocular signs have been infrequently described in literature. METHODS: A 20-year-old woman with Weber-Christian disease presented with severe bilateral ocular inflammation. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed. Effective treatment of relapsing idiopathic nodular panniculitis (Pfeifer-Weber-Christian disease) with mycophenolate mofetil.

Relapsing idiopathic nodular panniculitis is the term used to describe a group of diseases that presents as subcutaneous inflammatory nodules, fever and systemic symptoms and histopathologically displays inflammation within the fat lobules. There is no specific test for diagnosis and extensive investigations are required to exclude systemic causes of panniculitis. No uniform effective therapy is available and various drugs used include mainly corticosteroids alone or in combination with other immunosuppressive agents. Presented in this paper is an intractable case of idiopathic nodular pannicu

Ten-year course of early-onset Weber-Christian syndrome with recurrent pneumonia: a suggestion for pathogenesis.

A surviving 10-year-old boy with infant-onset systemic Weber-Christian syndrome is reported. He has had recurrent episodes of fever, aseptic panniculitis, and pneumonia. Although corticosteroid therapy has succeeded, colchicine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have failed to abort or prevent acute episodes. The persistent leukocytosis (even during remission), the recurrent episodes of fever with associated increase in the acute phase reactants, and the failure of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs leads us to propose that this form of Weber-Christian syndrome reflects an inborn

Exploring the Experiences of Receiving a Diagnosis of Depression in Black African Christians in the UK: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

ObjectivesIn the United Kingdom, the majority of depression cases are identified within primary care. Receiving a diagnosis of depression may provide a way of understanding one's symptoms, legitimise experiences and initiate access to treatment pathways such as medication and psychological therapies. There is a lack of research examining the experiences of Black ethnic minorities, or those with a religious affiliation, who seek help for depression symptoms from primary care. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the experiences of receiving a diagnosis of depression in primary

Determinants of oxidative stress in orthodox Christian women: A comparative analysis of monastic and non-monastic lifestyles.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress has been implicated in aging and metabolic dysfunction, modulated by diet, lifestyle, and body composition. While structured dietary practices such as intermittent fasting and plant-based regimens have demonstrated antioxidative benefits, the biological impact of long-term religious fasting remains underexplored. Orthodox Christian fasting, characterized by periodic abstention from animal products and alignment with circadian rhythms, offers a unique naturalistic model for examining redox adaptation in humans. OBJECTIVES: To identify the physiological and biologic
