Caffeoyl and coumaroyl derivatives from Acacia cochliacantha exhibit ovicidal activity against Haemonchus contortus.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Acacia cochliacantha is a small tree whose foliage is traditionally used in Mexico for treatment of kidney pain, gastrointestinal illnesses and to kill intestinal parasites. In recent decades, the study of vegetal extracts has offered other possible alternatives for the control of Haemonchus contortus. Considering that this nematode affects dramatically the health and productivity of small ruminants, the aim of this study was to identify the anthelmintic compounds from A. cochliacantha hydro-alcoholic extract (HA-E) through an ovicidal test. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Biological and nutritional properties of blackcurrant berries (Ribes nigrum L.) under conditions of shading nets.

BACKGROUND: Changes of environmental factors, created under the influence of various shading nets, could significantly affect the biological characteristics of plants grown in such conditions as well as biosynthesis of primary metabolites and ascorbic acid. Five blackcurrant cultivars - 'Ben Sarek', 'Ben Nevis', 'Ben Lomond', 'Ometa' and 'Čačanska Crna' - were cultivated in the shade of two green polyethylene nets and exposed to direct sunlight during two experimental seasons. RESULTS: In the control treatment, all cultivars contained the highest amounts of soluble solid content and number of

Protective Effect of Natural Phenolic Acids, Rosmarinic Acid and Salvianolic Acid, Against Diabetic Atherosclerosis.

Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) and atherosclerosis remain a major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Endothelial dysfunction is a central driver of atherosclerosis, which is significantly accelerated in diabetes mellitus through hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) accumulation, and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Phenolic acids, a class of plant-derived polyphenols, have gained attention as vasoprotective agents due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Among them, rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid have gained attention,

Hygromycin A Treatment of Borrelia burgdorferi-Infected Peromyscus leucopus Suggests Potential as a Reservoir-Targeted Antibiotic.

Lyme disease spirochetes are maintained in natural reservoirs before spilling over into human populations. Targeting these reservoirs with vaccinations or antibiotics could impact the Borrelia burgdorferi enzootic cycle and reduce the risk of human Lyme disease. In this work we report that the narrow-spectrum antibiotic hygromycin A is sufficient to disrupt B burgdorferi transmission from the main eastern US reservoir, Peromyscus leucopus, to ticks. Additionally, hygromycin A-containing baits can clear B burgdorferi from P leucopus. These studies lay the foundation for the use of hygromycin A

Changes in polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of Japanese pickled apricot with salted red perilla leaf during pickling and digestion process.

Japanese pickled apricot, called "umeboshi", is a traditional food that has experientially been consumed as a folk medicine. The main variation of umeboshi is called "shiso-zuke umeboshi", meaning pickled with red perilla leaves to add a colorful appearance. This study investigated changes in phenolics and antioxidant potential of shiso-zuke umeboshi during pickling processes and simulated digestion. Results showed that the red perilla pickling (PP; 1338.12) had 13 times higher phenolics than salt pickling (SP; 101.99) in μg/g DW, and the formation of rosmarinic acid was enhanced. The simulate

Behavioral pharmacology of methocinnamox: A potential new treatment for opioid overdose and opioid use disorder.

Opioid overdose and opioid use disorder continue to be significant public health challenges despite the availability of effective medications and significant efforts at all levels of society. The emergence of highly potent and efficacious opioids such as fentanyl and its derivatives over the last decade has only exacerbated what was already a substantial problem. Behavioral pharmacology research has proven invaluable for understanding the effects of drugs as well as developing and evaluating pharmacotherapies for disorders involving the central nervous system, including substance abuse disorde

Empirical Guidelines for the Development of Remote Directing Templates through Quantitative and Experimental Analyses.

The ability to differentiate and selectively activate remote C-H bonds represents a perennial challenge in the field of C-H activation. Since its first report in 2012, a now-established "directing template" (DT) approach remains demonstrably effective for the functionalization of remote C-H bonds. As selectivity is hypothesized to be principally determined by the optimal positioning of the reactive catalyst to a target C-H bond, a DT's spatial factors are particularly important toward achieving high selectivity, though a systematic study on its requisite factors remain unelucidated. Through an

Application of multivariate analysis to assess stress by Cd, Pb and Al in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) using caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total dry mass in response.

Basil is an edible, aromatic plant, which makes the study of the ecotoxicity of metals in plant metabolism relevant. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of metals, aluminum, lead, and cadmium, in the synthesis of phenolic compounds and in the dry mass of basil plants (O. basilicum L.) grown in a hydroponic system. The plants were subjected to four different concentrations of cadmium (0.2, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 mmol L-1), lead and aluminum (0.04, 0.08, 0.12, and 0.16 mmol L-1), and compared with the control. After desiccation of the plant material, the total dry

Aminoglycoside antibiotics in the 21st century.

Aminoglycoside antibiotics were among the first antibiotics discovered and used clinically. Although they have never completely fallen out of favor, their importance has waned due to the emergence of other broad-spectrum antibiotics with fewer side effects. Today, with the dramatically increasing rate of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, focus has returned to aminoglycoside antibiotics as one of the few remaining treatment options, particularly for Gram-negative pathogens. Although the mechanisms of resistance are reasonably well understood, our knowledge about the mode of act

Acute and chronic toxicity of four frequently used UV filter substances for Desmodesmus subspicatus and Daphnia magna.

As a consequence of growing public concern about UV radiation effects on human health chemical and physical UV filters are increasingly used in personal care and other products. The release of these lipophilic and often persistent compounds into surface waters may pose a risk for aquatic organisms. The aim of the study was to determine effects of four frequently used UV filters on primary aquatic producers and consumers, the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus and the crustacean Daphnia magna. Exposure to benzophenone 3 (BP3), ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), 3-benzylidene camphor (3-BC) and

The interactions between iophenoxic acid, iopanoic acid, bilirubin and human serum albumin as studied by fluorescence and Sephadex gel filtration.

Iophenoxic acid increases the fluorescence of bilirubin bound to human serum albumin at drug/albumin molar ratios lower than 1, while iopanoic acid decreases it. The fluorescence enhancement results probably from a change in the fluorescence efficiency due to an iophenoxic acid-induced conformational change in the albumin, which in turn causes displacement of bilirubin from the protein. Iophenoxic acid does not affect the high-affinity bilirubin binding site of albumin. Therefore any enhancement in bilirubin fluorescence caused by the drug indicates that bilirubin is bound to the low-affinity

Synthesis and neuroprotective activity evaluation of diosgenin derivatives based on a biocatalytic-chemosynthetic combinatorial strategy.

The natural steroidal compound diosgenin possesses neuroprotective pharmacological activity. To obtain compounds with enhanced activity, this study, based on the molecular hybridization strategy, firstly synthesized a series of C-3 position substituted derivatives (DG1-DG15) via esterification reactions between diosgenin and cinnamic acid derivatives. Given the limited modifiable sites on diosgenin, this study then innovatively combined biotransformation and chemical semi-synthesis for its structural modification, integrating the high regio- and stereoselectivity of biocatalysis with the flexi

Synthesis and optimization of a 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline based polymer for enhanced phenolic acid extraction.

Phenolic acids, widely present in plants, plant-based foods, and human metabolites, are well known for their potent antioxidant properties, which are mainly attributed to their phenolic hydroxyl groups. The number and position of these hydroxyl groups, together with methoxy and carboxylic acid groups significantly influence their antioxidant capacity. In this study, five different phenolic acids were studied: chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic acid and trans-cinnamic acid. They were analyzed by solid phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography hy

Tissue-preferential recruitment of electron transfer chains for cytochrome P450-catalyzed phenolic biosynthesis.

Cytochrome P450 system consists of P450 monooxygenase and redox pattern(s). While the importance of monooxygenases in plant metabolism is well documented, the metabolic roles of the related redox components have been largely overlooked. Here, we show that distinct electron transfer chains are recruited in phenylpropanoid-monolignol P450 systems to support the synthesis and distribution of different classes of phenolics in different plant tissues. While Arabidopsis cinnamate 4-hydroxylase adopts conventional NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (CPR) electron transfer chain for its para-hydroxy
