Risk of obstetric anal sphincter injury associated with female genital mutilation/cutting and timing of deinfibulation.

INTRODUCTION: A greater risk of obstetric anal sphincter injury has been reported among African migrants in several host countries compared with the general population. To what degree female genital mutilation/cutting affects this risk is not clear. In infibulated women, deinfibulation prevents anal sphincter injury. Whether the timing of deinfibulation affects the risk, is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the risks of anal sphincter injury associated with female genital mutilation/cutting and timing of deinfibulation in Norway, and to compare the rates of anal sphincter injury in Soma

Consideration of Cultural Practices When Characterizing the Vaginal Microbiota Among African and African American Women.

This manuscript considers intravaginal practices prevalent among African and African-American women, with the aim of providing a framework for how these practices may affect vaginal health and the vaginal microbiota, and consequently, impact pregnancy outcomes. Intravaginal practices are influenced by traditional socio-cultural beliefs and gender norms, with prominent practices including intravaginal insertion of substances (herbs and traditional medicines), intravaginal cleansing (douching), and anatomical modification of the female organs (labia elongation and female genital mutilation). The relationship between female genital cutting and obstetric fistulae.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate any association between female genital cutting and vesicovaginal fistula formation during obstructed labor. METHODS: A comparison was made between 255 fistula patients who had undergone type I or type II female genital cutting and 237 patients who had not undergone such cutting. Women were operated on at the Barhirdar Hamlin Fistula Centre in Ethiopia. Data points used in the analysis included age; parity; length of labor; labor outcome (stillbirth or not); type of fistula; site, size, and scarring of fistula; outcomes of surgery (fistula closed; persistent incontinence

[Sexual mutilation in women].

The sexual mutilations, a fairly topical subject, remain very frequent (between 80 and 100 millions). The excisions are in practice mainly in Africa (in at last 20 countries), but also in the Far-East and Indonesia. In some cases, such practices are very mutilative (Pharaonic infibulation). They may drag to the death, through haemorrhage or infection. The short and long term medical complications are fearful, tetanus, vesicovaginal fistulae, vaginal or vulvar sclerosis, forbidding any sexual involvement and hampering delivery. The grounds of these practices are basically customary and not reli

Female genital mutilation in the world today: a global review.

Extensive research and field work have established that more than 74 million women and female children are mutilated by female genital operations in Africa alone. The operations are also practiced in many parts of the Middle East and, with Moslemization, were introduced into Indonesia and Malaysia where they are preformed at the present time in a less damaging form. This paper lists the countries where instances of excision and infibulation have been reported and includes case reports from Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, Upper Volta, and Senegal. The ethical issues posed

Evaluation of maternal preferences for neonatal male circumcision in Enugu Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Although circumcision in male neonates is one of the most common procedures performed in neonatal surgery, mothers' preferences concerning the aspects of circumcision are not well-known. Since mother is the likely parent to present child for circumcision, her preferences should be given adequate consideration. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate maternal preferences for neonatal male circumcision in Enugu. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study where questionnaire was distributed by the researchers to consenting pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in two t

Tetanus in adult males, Bugando Medical Centre, United Republic of Tanzania.

PROBLEM: In the United Republic of Tanzania, the incidence of non-neonatal circumcision-related tetanus is probably underreported. APPROACH: We analysed charts and extracted information on outcome and wound location for non-neonatal cases of tetanus admitted to the intensive care unit of Bugando Medical Centre between 2001 and 2016. LOCAL SETTING: Bugando Medical Centre, which is one of four teaching referral hospitals in the United Republic of Tanzania, has a 13-bed intensive care unit that manages all admitted patients with tetanus. Within the United Republic of Tanzania, formal programmes

Acceptability of early infant male circumcision among Chinese parents: strategy implications of HIV prevention for China.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence has confirmed that circumcision can be performed as a preventive strategy for HIV and early infant male circumcision (EIMC) is regarded to be safer than circumcision in adulthood; however, limited data are available in the literature about EIMC in China. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine the willingness and attitudes of Chinese parents on newborn male circumcision so as to provide data for exploring the feasibility of implementing EIMC as an HIV prevention strategy in China. METHODS: Simple random sampling was used to draw participants from par

To cut or not to cut: a modeling approach for assessing the role of male circumcision in HIV control.

A recent randomized controlled trial shows a significant reduction in women-to-men transmission of HIV due to male circumcision. Such development calls for a rigorous mathematical study to ascertain the full impact of male circumcision in reducing HIV burden, especially in resource-poor nations where access to anti-retroviral drugs is limited. First of all, this paper presents a compartmental model for the transmission dynamics of HIV in a community where male circumcision is practiced. In addition to having a disease-free equilibrium, which is locally-asymptotically stable whenever a certain

EuroGuiderm guideline on lichen sclerosus-Treatment of lichen sclerosus.

INTRODUCTION: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is an inflammatory skin disease affecting all ages. LS typically involves the anogenital site where it causes itching and soreness; it may lead to sexual and urinary dysfunction in females and males; however, it may be asymptomatic. First signs of LS are usually a whitening of the genital skin, sometimes preceded by redness and oedema; fissuring, scarring, shrinkage and fusion of structures may follow in its course. LS is associated with an increased risk of genital cancer. LS has a huge impact on the quality of life of affected patients, and it is important

Prevalence and Risk Factors of HBV and HCV Co-Infection Among People Living with HIV in an Egyptian Setting.

BACKGROUND: Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infections constitute a global health concern. They share common modes of transmission, increasing the likelihood of co-infection. Co-infection accelerates viral replication, promotes the progression of chronic liver diseases and challenges antiviral therapy. There are no available data addressing the magnitude of chronic viral hepatitis co-infection in people living with HIV in Egypt. Nor is there a mandate for HCV/HBV screening. This cross-sectional study provides needed data on HBV and/or HC

Female genital mutilation/cutting: knowledge, attitudes, and practices among key caregivers: a French national survey.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a prevalent traditional practice affecting over 230 million women globally. Gynaecologists and obstetricians (OB/GYN), midwives, and infectious disease (ID) specialists frequently encounter migrant women affected by FGM/C. This study aimed to evaluate these caregivers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to FGM/C. METHODS: The questionnaire, designed by an international multidisciplinary team, included 30 questions divided into 5 sections (demographics, practices, knowledge, attitudes and training). It was disseminated via LimeS

Histories of pervasive gender-based violence in asylum-seeking women who have undergone female genital mutilation or cutting.

Few studies have described the broader experience of survivors of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) who have sought asylum in the United States. To gain a better understanding of their exposure to gender-based violence (GBV), the study was conducted to help uncover themes and patterns of co-occurring individual and community factors among women asylum seekers who experienced FGM/C before they arrived in the United States. Following a retrospective chart review of FGM/C cases seen in a human rights clinic, 35 women met the inclusion criteria. The constant comparative method (CCM) was

Laparoscopic gonadectomy in dogs with ovotesticular disorder of sexual development.

Disorders of sexual development (DSD) in dogs involve most commonly an XX sex reversal syndrome, treated conventionally by gonadohysterectomy. The objective of the present case series is to describe the surgical treatment and long-term follow-up of dogs undergoing laparoscopic gonadectomy without hysterectomy for treatment of ovotesticular DSD. Six female dogs clinically diagnosed with DSD were retrospectively included in the study when laparoscopic gonadectomy was performed and histology confirmed the presence of abnormal gonads. The dogs were evaluated by ultrasound after 6 months, and owner
