Communicating hydrocephalus in adult rats with kaolin obstruction of the basal cisterns or the cortical subarachnoid space.

Communicating hydrocephalus (CH) occurs frequently, but clinically-relevant animal models amenable to diagnostic imaging and cerebrospinal f … s in the SAS. In BC-injected rats, kaolin was observed grossly in the basal cisterns but not in the cisterna magna or at the foramina of Luschka, indicating that communicating (or extra-ventricular)--not obstructive--hydrocephalus had been induced. Following ketamine/xylazine anesthesia, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of gadolinium injected into the lateral ve …

[Surgical treatment for symptomatic arachnoid cysts].

During the period from 1983 to 1999, 12 patients with symptomatic arachnoid cyst were treated. The mean patient age was 20.6 years. The most common location was the middle fossa (10 cases). Initial CT scan revealed associated subdural hygroma in 7 patients and hydrocephalus in one. Clinical symptoms were related to increased intracranial pressure, cranio-megaly and seizure. One infant with a huge arachnoid cyst was treated, using a cystoperitoneal (CP) shunt. Four patients underwent membraectomy. Combination CP shunt and membraectomy was performed in 5 patients. The remaining 2 arachnoid cysts

Endothelin and aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage: a study of subarachnoid cisternal cerebrospinal fluid.

Endothelin (ET) is considered one of the most potent vasoconstrictor polypeptides; several experimental studies have suggested its possible role in the pathogenesis of arterial vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Previously reported data on plasma and CSF levels of endothelin in patients with a diagnosis of SAH have been controversial. Cisternal endothelin CSF levels and the possibility that they could be related to vasospasm and other clinical patterns of SAH were investigated. CSF samples were obtained from 55 patients admitted after angiographic diagnosis of intracranial aneurys

Cardiovascular effects of morphine during hypothermia.

The cardiovascular effects of morphine were determined in anesthetized dogs at 37 and 30 degrees C. Intravenous (i.v., 1 mg/kg) but not intracisternal (i.c., 0.1 mg/kg) morphine produced a significant cardiovascular depression only at 30 degrees C. These effects were antagonized by i.v. naloxone (1 mg/kg) suggesting a peripherally mediated opiate mechanism. Moreover, hypothermia significantly increased plasma and cerebrospinal fluid morphine levels and enhanced the morphine-induced histamine release. The results suggest that opiates could have detrimental effects in patients with poor cardiova

A study of intrathecal, cerebrospinal fluid-to-brain exchange.

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to brain exchange has been postulated for lipid-soluble and small molecular substances and has led to nearly 100 attempts per year to produce central effects via intrathecal injections. With few exceptions, however, modern neurological practice has avoided this approach because of its demonstrated ineffectiveness and dangers. The practicability of an intrathecal CSF to brain exchange was tested by cisternal infusions of mock CSF at different infusion pressures that might counteract central nervous system intoxications of systemic origin. Those efforts failed in diff

Diagnosis of intraventricular and cisternal cysticercosis by computerized tomography with positive intraventricular contrast medium.

Computerized tomography (CT) has replaced pneumoencephalography and ventriculography in the diagnosis of intraventricular cysticercosis. The authors present a refinement in the use of CT by introducing a positive contrast medium into the ventricles to increase the definition of plain and contrast-enhanced scans in the diagnosis of intraventricular cysticercosis. Eleven cases of Cysticercus cyst are presented, 10 or which were precisely delineated by CT-iodoventriculography. In the remaining case, lack of definition was due to obstruction of the cerebral aqueduct. Surgical confirmation was obta

[Computertomographic and morphological findings in cerebral infarctions and intracerebral haematomas in identical sections (author's transl)].

The paper deals with computertomographic and morphological studies in patients who died suffering from brain ischaemia, haemorrhagical infarction and haemorrhages. These examinations were done in identical sections. Methodically computerized tomograms in living patients, postmortal tomograms, brain sections and macrosections were used. Not in all cases corresponding findings were observed, due to the following factors 1. Size of the lesion 2. Localisation 3. Time of examination 4. Premortal alterations. The different factors are discussed in detail.

Cardiovascular effects of hypertonic sodium chloride solutions when injected into the liquor space of anaesthetized cats.

1 In cats anaesthetized with chloralose, hyper- and hypotonic solutions were injected into the cisterna magna (in 0.5 ml) or into a lateral cerebral ventricle (in 0.2 to 0.3 ml), with aqueduct cannulated to prevent the injected solution from entering the subarachnoid space, and the effects on blood pressure and heart rate were examined. 2 Cisternal injections of hyper- and hypotonic solutions of NaCl (0.51 M and 0.05 M), glucose (1.03 M and 0.10 M), or sucrose (1.02 M and 0.10 M), as well as distilled water produced a rise in arterial blood pressure with tachycardias. Isotonic solutions of NaC…

[Effects of hypertonic sodium chloride hydroxyethyl starch solution on cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage and its mechanism].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect and potential mechanisms of hypertonic sodium chloride hydroxyethyl starch solution (HSH) against the cerebral vasospasm (CVS) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned to four groups according to the random number table, with 6 rats in each group. The SAH-CVS model was reproduced by injection of the blood twice through the cisterna magna. Rats in both model and HSH treatment groups received 8 mL/kg normal saline (NS) or HSH treatment everyday via caudal vein. Rats in sham …

The upregulation of caveolin-1 expression via the TLR4-Myd88 pathway contributes to cerebral vasospasm.

Cerebral vasospasm (CVS) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) significantly impacts patient morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the role of the TLR4-MyD88 signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of CVS and its relationship with Caveolin-1 (CAV-1). We established a rat model of SAH using the double blood injection method in the cisterna magna to induce CVS. Various techniques, including pathological assessments, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and RT-qPCR, were employed to evaluate the expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), MyD88, NF-κB, and CAV-1. The results …

A pathological approach to anomalies of the posterior fossa.

BACKGROUND: Both clinical and postmortem diagnoses of posterior fossa anomalies remain difficult to make and to corroborate. This is particularly true for Dandy-Walker malformation and variant. Difficulties arise for a variety of reasons, including technical and methodological ones, but also because the conditions may overlap anatomically with others, most notably mega cisterna magna, Blake's pouch cyst, and posterior fossa (arachnoid) cysts. Family counseling is difficult and complicated not only by diagnostic uncertainties but by the highly variable prognosis. METHODS: In this study, a syst…

Impaired cerebral vasodilator responses to NO and PDE V inhibition after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is associated with impaired nitric oxide (NO)-mediated cerebral vasodilatation. We tested the hypothesis that SAH causes alterations in the production of, hydrolysis of, or responsiveness to cGMP in the rat basilar artery in vivo. Rats were injected with saline or autologous blood into the cisterna magna. Two days later, effects of vasoactive drugs on basilar artery diameter were examined using a cranial window preparation. Vasodilator responses to ACh, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and low concentrations (</=10(-5) M) of zaprinast, an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase…
