We analyze the frequency and amplitude of projected warming and ocean acidification extremes under high CO2 and strongly mitigating scenarios. We find interpretational differences in projections arising from methodological choices associated with specification of stressor thresholds. Use of absolute versus distribution-based thresholds, and, in the distribution-based case, the inclusion or exclusion of seasonal variability, can lead to very different regional patterns in projected stress. The choice of fixed versus adaptive baseline, for example, determines whether future stress frequency in t

Understanding how climate shapes ecosystem productivity through energetic constraints and changes in the functional properties expressed by vegetation remains challenging. This is central to trait-based biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research in mountain grasslands where warming and environmental gradients interact. Here, we distinguish direct climatic controls on productivity from indirect pathways operating through changes in canopy functional composition, physiological state, and within-plot spectral functional heterogeneity across the European Alps. Using Sentinel-2 time series (2017-2

Eighty percent of the world's youth live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet access to trauma-focused mental health care in these settings remains limited despite a high burden of mental health disorders and trauma exposure among youth. Task-shifting models that train lay counselors to deliver evidence-based treatments can expand access to care, yet delivering trauma-focused treatment may increase counselors' vulnerability to secondary traumatic stress (STS). Organization-level support may play an important role in sustaining counselor well-being, yet little is known about which o

Dengue fever in Vietnam is increasingly influenced by climate variability, yet most early warning systems still rely on single-model, province-level forecasts that overlook lagged climate drivers, spatial spillover, and extreme-outbreak risk. This study develops and evaluates an integrated, climate-informed dengue forecasting framework for Ba Ria–Vung Tau (BRVT), a coastal province in southern Vietnam, using weekly district-level dengue surveillance data and 17 satellite-derived meteorological variables from 2003 to 2022. We first applied distributed lag nonlinear models, mutual information, a

Climate-sensitive infectious diseases pose an important challenge for human, animal and environmental health and it has been estimated that over half of known human pathogenic diseases can be aggravated by climate change. While climatic and weather conditions are important drivers of transmission of vector-borne diseases, socio-economic, behavioural, and land-use factors as well as the interactions among them impact transmission dynamics. Analysis of drivers of climate-sensitive diseases require rapid integration of interdisciplinary data to be jointly analysed with epidemiological (including

Anthropogenic activities are altering ecosystem stability and climate worldwide, which is disturbing and shifting arbovirus vector distributions. Although the overall geographic range of some epidemiologically important species is recognized, the spatiotemporal variation for other species in the context of climate change remains poorly understood. Here we predict the current potential distribution of 9 species of Culex (Melanoconion) based on an ecological niche modeling (ENM) approach and assess spatiotemporal variation in future climate change in the Neotropics. The most important environmen

South Asia's coastlines are the most densely inhabited and economically active ecosystems have already begun to shift due to climate change. Over the past century, climate change has contributed to a gradual and considerable rise in sea level, which has eroded shorelines and increased storm-related coastal flooding. The differences in estuary water quality over time, both seasonally and annually, have been efficiently controlled by changes in stream flow. Assessment requires digitized analytical platforms to lower the risk of catastrophes associated with climate change in coastal towns. To pre

Climate change exacerbates extreme temperature events, which pose a growing global threat to human health, especially disturbing the immune system and increasing the incidence of immune-related diseases. This review synthesizes the multifaceted links between extreme temperatures and human immune system. Extreme temperatures could activate the neuroendocrine system, trigger the release of cytokines, regulate heat shock proteins (HSPs) and induce epigenetic modifications. The epithelial barrier dysfunction and gut microbiota dysbiosis are involved in the association between extreme temperature a

Global climate appears to be changing at an unprecedented rate. Climate change can be caused by several factors that include variations in solar radiation received by earth, oceanic processes (such as oceanic circulation), plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions, as well as human-induced alterations of the natural world. Many human activities, such as the use of fossil fuel and the consequent accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, land consumption, deforestation, industrial processes, as well as some agriculture practices are contributing to global climate change. Indeed, many aut

INTRODUCTION: Climate change significantly impacts the health and future of adolescents, yet they have limited ability to prevent its effects, leaving them especially vulnerable to climate anxiety. The present study aims to first explore the psychometric properties of the Climate Change Anxiety Scale among adolescents in Italy (Study 1), and to investigate the psychological pathways through which climate change anxiety impacts adolescents' pro-environmental attitudes, examining the mediating roles of climate change worry and rumination related to eco-anxiety (Study 2).

Climate change is expected to drive the northward expansion of phlebotomine sand flies in Europe, increasing the potential for transmission of vector-borne pathogens such as Leishmania infantum. This study assessed the historical baseline and future climatic suitability for Phlebotomus mascittii, the northernmost distributed sand fly species in Europe, across Western Europe. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was developed using summer climatic variables and land cover data, based on standardised field surveys conducted in 2023-2024 across France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the N

INTRODUCTION: Climate change profoundly affects ecosystems and public health, particularly by altering the dynamics of vector-borne diseases. This study investigates the impact of climate change on the distribution and biological behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and the prevalence of dengue fever in Tehran Province, a semi-arid region of Iran. Over the past two decades, the province has experienced significant climatic shifts, including a 7.3 % increase in average annual temperature, a 12.5 % decrease in rainfall, and a 50 % rise in the number of hot days, creating favorable conditions for

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector for several diseases of global importance, such as dengue and yellow fever. This species was first identified on Madeira Island in 2005, and between 2012 and 2013 was responsible for an outbreak of dengue that affected several thousand people. However, the potential distribution of the species on the island remains poorly investigated. Here we assess the suitability of current and future climatic conditions to the species on the island and complement this assessment with estimates of the suitability of land use and human settlement conditions. We u

The global food system faces challenges from climate change and air pollution. Here, we examined their effects on rice yield in the North Indian plain (NIP), one of the principal rice-growing areas of the world. Combining satellite-based biophysical data products and spectral indices with soil moisture and fertilizer usage, we mapped high-resolution rice yield indiscriminately for both irrigated and rainfed systems in the NIP during the summer monsoon from 2004 to 2019. The footprints of meteorology and air pollution on the changing patterns of rice yield were isolated through multivariate lin

Climate change is postulated to impact infectious disease transmission, yet few studies have characterised the excess risks of infectious diseases associated with extreme weather events. To address this, we conducted a study estimating and projecting the impacts of extreme heat and precipitation on the incidence of major infectious diseases in Thailand. We developed, fitted and validated an analytical framework to model province-level disease cases and their relationship with extreme weather indicators based on historical data. We used generalised additive models to delineate the relationship

Black carbon (BC) exerts a profound and intricate impact on both air quality and climate due to its high light absorption. However, the uncertainty in representing the absorption enhancement of BC in climate models leads to an increased range in the modeled aerosol climate effects. Changes in BC optical properties could result either from atmospheric aging processes or from variations in its sources. In this study, a source-age model for identifying emission sources and aging states presented by University of California at Davis/California Institute of Technology (UCD/CIT) was used to simulate…

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a major air pollutant that adversely affects human health, climate and ecosystems. However, its removal in urban environments remains poorly represented in air-quality and climate models, largely due to limited flux-based observations of urban O3 deposition. Using eddy-covariance flux measurements from a meteorological tower in Beijing, we show─for the first time to our knowledge─that surface uptake plays a central role in O3 removal in urban environments but is strongly limited under dry conditions by evaporation and by higher-above-measurement nitrogen monoxide (NO…

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping dermatology through diagnostic image analysis, clinical documentation, and patient communication tools. However, AI's environmental costs remain largely invisible to clinicians. Because training large AI models requires substantial energy, data center electricity use has risen alongside AI adoption, and cooling AI infrastructure centers increases water demand. These environmental burdens disproportionately affect resource-constrained communities. This creates an urgent priority for dermatology. Climate change directly threatens dermatologic health thro

The impact of Borrelia miyamotoi on human health, facilitated by the expanding geographical distribution and increasing population of Ixodes ticks, remains obscure in the context of global climate change. We employed multiple models to evaluate the effect of global climate change on the risk of B. miyamotoi worldwide across various scenarios. The habitat suitability index of four primary vector tick species for B. miyamotoi, including Ixodes persulcatus, Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes pacificus and Ixodes scapularis, was projected using a boosted regression tree model, considering multiple shared soci

A defining feature of Earth's present-day climate is that the Southern Hemisphere is stormier than the Northern Hemisphere. Consistently, the Southern Hemisphere has a stronger jet stream and more extreme weather events than the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the relative importance of land-ocean contrast, including topography, radiative processes, and ocean circulation for determining this storminess asymmetry is important and may be helpful for interpreting projections of future storminess. Here, we show that the stormier Southern Hemisphere is induced by nearly equal contributions from
