While interfacial graphite formation and subsequent poor film adhesion is commonly reported for chemical vapor deposited hard carbon films on cobalt-based materials, we find the presence of O(2) in the feedgas mixture to be useful in achieving adhesion on a CoCrMo alloy. Nucleation studies of surface structure before formation of fully coalesced hard carbon films reveal that O(2) feedgas helps mask the catalytic effect of cobalt with carbon through early formation of chromium oxides and carbides. BACKGROUND: Chronic renal hypoxia is suspected to play a pathogenic role in the genesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Cobalt enhances the activity of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), a key factor in the defence against hypoxia. Its long-term effect on DN is evaluated.

This study was designed to monitor serum cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) levels at multiple time points following hip resurfacing with the Cormet 2000 device. Serum samples were obtained preoperatively, at 6 months, 1, 2, and 3 years after surgery. Co/Cr levels (micro g/L) were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Molecular modeling and a detailed spectroscopic characterization of the macrocyclic complex [Co(dohpn)(CN)(2)] (dohpn=2,3,9,10-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazaundecane-1,3,8,10-tetraen-11-ol-1-olate and py=pyridine) is herein presented.
