Comparisons of the course of coccidioidomycosis in two strains of inbred mice established that BALB/c mice are significantly more susceptible to pulmonary infection with Coccidioides immitis than are DBA/2 mice. The susceptibility of BALB/c mice does not reside in their inability to mount a delayed-type hypersensitivity response to C. immitis antigen. Herein described is a case of biofilm obstructing ventriculoperitoneal shunt due to Cutibacteirum acnes infection in a patient with coccidioidal meningitis. Cutibacterium acnes infects and obstructs cerebral shunts by the production of biofilm; however, diagnosis is usually missed by routine aerobic cultures. Obtaining anaerobic cultures routinely in patients with foreign body implants leading to central nervous system infections could prevent a missed diagnosis of this pathogen. Penicillin G is the first-line treatment.

Three patients with endogenous fungal endophthalmitis were treated intravenously with miconazole. Two patients had disseminated coccidioidomycosis, and one patient had disseminated candidiasis. Intraocular mycotic infections developed in one patient undergoing therapy, and progressed in two others also undergoing therapy. We describe a recent case of Coccidioides bioprosthetic aortic valve infective endocarditis successfully managed at our institution. This led us to perform a literature review of endemic fungal infective endocarditis in the United States caused by Coccidioides, Blastomyces, and Histoplasma.
